Not the best experience. I wouldn’t recommend this Dr. Cataract surgery done in very cramped on site environment. Initially was asked to prepare any questions I had about the surgery, bur never got a response until the the day of the surgery, the Dr. called and seemed annoyed that he had to respond. In the long run I also required Lasix surgery, that wasn’t covered by my insurance. Won’t be going back.

I’m giving him two stars because he did a good job on my first eye. But I would give him no stars for my second eye. I now have to use reading glasses which I never needed before. I’m an artist and my close up vision is really important to me. I knew I would continue to need glasses for distance. In the end, I did not get what I signed up for. He knew it, to the point of having his assistant stay in the room for his exam. I’m so mad. He doesn’t listen.

This review is for LASIK procedure, performed 11 years ago by this wonderful doctor. Let it be known if you want a «velvet glove treatment», like other Unilocalers have complained about, maybe you will find this doctor to not be your type. Before Unilocal existed, I spent some time asking around Santa Cruz for actual references for a place to go to get my eyes zapped. It was 2003, just turned 23 and figured the best gift would be to rid myself of a 15 year handicap. I found Dr. Hsei @ Bay Area Medical Group off Dominican Way. Nervous as I was, Dr. Hsei was keen to answer all my questions, with even a little humor. I asked him, «so why should I trust you with my only set of eyes?» Dr. Hsei answered, «because I’ve been performing this procedure successfully for quite a long time.» I retorted, «that doesn’t tell me anything.» To which he replied, «Okay. I’ll have you know my first LASIK patient was my wife, and we’re still happily married.» I liked his sense of humor and his direct, succinct answers, and his LASIK procedure was simple, quick and painless. His office staff was supportive and friendly, and after 11 years I can see as perfectly as I ever have. During our initial consultation, Dr. Hsei displayed a digital, «topographical map» of my eye, which was fascinating to look at. «You see those bumps that look like little foothills, that’s astigmatism, «Dr. Hsei informed me. «Look at the shape, less dome more egg-like.» I was –6.00 in my right and –6.25 in my left eye. The price was reasonable and the 1 year guarantee to mend any mistakes left me knowing I had chosen the right place for my LASIK. I am living proof that Dr. Rex Hsei’s LASIK procedure is one you can depend on for years to come!(11 and happily counting)

Medically competent but way too brusque and really inattentive to anything patients says. The wrong lens was inserted with my cataract surgery because he did not listen at all to what I was asking for.

Don’t go to this asshole, he is arrogant, chauvinistic, and unprofessional. He lacks compassion and his ethics are questionable. Probably should work in a research lab instead of in a clinical setting(although I’m sure lab rats would not like his bedside manner as well). I know others who have left his office in tears, due to his rude and dismissive attitude. I will not go back to any doctor at this office because of this horrible experience.

He was rude, arrogant and did not even spend ten minutes in the room with me. He made me feel like I was taking up his time.
