We had lessons (again) recently with the Richard Schmidt School of Surfing. We had lessons with Richard one day and then his instructors on another day. We’ve had lessons from his surf school before and have attended his surf camps in both Santa Cruz and Costa Rica, and we’ve always been happy with Richard and his instructors. They are extremely patient and are always able to help us catch waves. Santa Cruz is a great place to learn how to surf and Richards school is the best. We definitely recommend them!

My first time surfing, and it was awesome! The instructors were super helpful and the waves were perfect. We were in a group of six and most of us had water sports experience, but not surfing. The instructors helped us one by one as others paddled back out. Everyone got up! Lots of times! I will 100% be going again.

I surfed with these guys a couple times at the Hook. I surfed with Casey once and Zolton once. They’re both total pro surfers and totally cool guys. I definitely got on top of some waves and had an awesome time. They helped me position and time the waves so I could catch the waves by myself too. I got better and better with each lesson. I also really like that the lesson is only 4 students per session and the Hook didn’t seem too crowded. I surfed at the Cowells with another instructor. I really preferred the Hook with Richard Schmidt’s group.

The instructor (Jim) was extremely knowledgable, very friendly and super-​helpful. 4-​to-​1 student to instructor ratio was perfect. This was my first time surfing, and I got up on the board on the first wave… far more a testament to the quality of the lesson and location than my aptitude or ability. Many thanks for sharing the stoke!

My 12 year old boy had never tried surfing and we are so glad that he learned with the Richard Schmidt school of surfing. He took a couple of group lessons and some private lessons too. All of the instructors were kind, on time, and very excited to teach him. Furthermore, the administration was very thoughtful when we struggled with traffic and did everything possible to find solutions for us as we are coming from San Jose. Thank you for introducing my son to the beginning of a wonderful relationship between him and the ocean :)

Had such a great experience with the Richard Schmidt School of Surfing that I actually have another lesson booked with them. Had the instructor Chris who was awesome! He helped me catch every single wave. The lesson was at the Pleasure Point location which was a great place to learn — it also helped that the place has a ton of seaweed/​kelp because apparently that means less visits from sharks ;) You pay $ 90 for your first group lesson and if you decide to come back for more, it will be $ 70. They provide the wetsuits and boards!

Great experience. We booked a semi-​private lesson for our group of 3 (ages, 50, 16 and 12). Everyone was able to get up and catch some waves. Chris the instructor was amazing.

We signed up our son for lessons yesterday and we were terribly disappointed. Maybe we had high expectations based on reviews but the instructors were late, and while ONE instructor got all the students ready to go, it was almost 50 mins into the class. The kids barely got an hour in the water and no attention was given to ensure any kind of personalized attention even for a brief moment. Our son had taken group lessons in Hawaii and was able to get on his feet after a few tries and today, we could see that the quality of instructions and attention made all the difference. He was very very disappointed when I asked him about his experience! Will look for someone else for summer.

My husband and I had a lesson with Zoltan and Richard. It was amazing! Wetsuits and foam boards to fit. Personalized instruction and practice on the sand. Than we got in the water. I can’t think of a better way to spend 2 hours. Every person out with Richard’s instructors caught waves, lots! Thank you for teaching beginners! I can’t wait for the next lesson!

Oh a whim my friend an I decided to go surfing yesterday, and I’m so glad we chose Richard Schmidt.
It was a very smooth and well run operation — I called in the AM to reserve our spot, and pay by card over the phone, and then showed up by the van at 1 PM and off we went!
Chris was very patient, answering all the questions that I had, explaining to me why I was falling off each time (!) and helping me actually catch the waves as my paddling wasn’t nearly strong enough! We were in a group class, with three of us, and it was so tiring paddling out between waves, I was happy for the rest between waves/​while Chris helped the other students catch waves. Having tried surfing a few times before (without lessons, or success) I was ‘stoked’ when, with Chris’s instruction and help I caught my first wave!
If I come back to Santa Cruz again for lessons, I’ll definitely choose Richard Schmidt School of Surfing — thanks guys!

My husband and I took a stand up paddle boarding lesson from Richard on Sunday. We decided on a whim to take a lesson and after calling around to a few places, we found that RSSS had the best value.
Richard showed up on time with a van full of gear. We spent about 25 minutes in the sand learning about safety and proper technique. We then paddled out to the calm ocean waters and after paddling on our knees for about 15 minutes, Richard coached each of us through the process of standing up.
It is a lot harder than it looks, but Richard was the perfect coach. He built up your confidence, corrected your mistakes and calmly talked you through the entire movement.
In less than 15 minutes both of us were standing upright and enjoying our first few moments of glory! We had so much fun that we are already looking forward to our next vacation in Mexico and hoping we can work on elevating our new found SUP’ing skills. Thanks, Richard!!!

Oh Dave! What an amazingly patient and really thoughtful instructor. And SAFE! My friend wanted to come surfing and she doesn’t even know how to swim, but Dave taught the basics to give us all confidence to be brave and embrace all the obstacles that come with learning something new.
I went in a group lesson, for a total of four in the class. The wet suits were great, we were really warm the whole session. The boards provided are perfect for first timers, as we were all able to catch some waves and wipeouts without harm.
The class, despite being 4 of us, felt extremely personable. We each took turns riding a wave. It’s awesome for a first timer, as Dave finds each student a perfect wave and calls out the movements he taught earlier in the sand. We’re all so dizzy from the excitement of the day (we had our class a few hours earlier) and can’t wait to go back to learn more.

Excellent! My wife and I went twice and learned more each time! Our instructor, Conrad, gave us some great advice and got us both up! Between his great experience as a surfer and his awesome people skills, we both were able to catch waves and had a blast! I would recommend to anyone who’s looking to learn for the first time!

Loved surfing with Conrad, he talked about the tides and gave us a good pre water lesson. We went to a famous surfing spot called the hook, which was great yet a little longer walk to the «bunny slopes». We even saw a sea otter while we where out there:) great place to go even if it is your first time.
