The GREENONION gets five stars for just being a # ONE totally friendly neighborhood sports bar. You could plunk this baby down in any hood in the US, open the doors and start pouring beer and it soon would be filled with folks who didn’t know each other 15 minutes ago laughing, buying each other drinks and sharing secrets. It is just a «good olé time» that has been in this same location on St. Mike’s for many, many years. The only Irish Bar in town, it literally becomes Ireland and home to many on St. Paddy’s Day. I used to sneak away with a friend for long lunches in the middle of the afternoon at the Green Onion when I was a cartographer at the NMHD a few years back. Our days were long and intense, so every once in a while we just needed to escape to an island on the other side of the globe. The GO filled that order. We could sit in a cozy corner and drink and whisper and share and nobody cared a spit who we were or what our secrets were. Every once in a while the barmaid or bartender brought us more drinks and a few nibbles and just left us alone in our little intimate world. It always felt so completely comfortable to be here. So at home. So corner neighborhood bar. I miss him desperately! I miss the sweet times we had at the GREENONION — just the two of us!

The Green Onion is a pretty standard sports bar, stinky and awesome with delicious greasy hangover food. The perfect place to watch Sunday football and have a grilled cheese, some wings and what have you.

I used to be a regular at this lovely ol’ place. You could usually find me with a black and tan, a great burger with a green chile strip, and some NTN Trivia. This is a great place for just hanging out and drinking, with a groovy clientele of locals and college kids from St. John’s or The College Of Santa Fe. I doubt much has changed inside since I was last there, but the walls were covered with caricatures of regulars. They may have upgraded the teevees, but I’m sure it’s still the same Green Onion. I still wear my Green Onion t-shirt. I really miss this place.

I know bars like this exist other places, but this is the only one I have been to. they give you these cool wireless boxes that you take to your table that let you predict the next play and compete for tshirts and beers etc. So while you are there getting a big plate of nachos and watching the football game, you are racking up points calling the plays against everyone else in the bar. I will warn you the Green Onion is pretty sketchy, dirty, and poorly lit. But the food is good and it is a great place to watch a game(I suggest monday night football). And order a lot of beer.
