The Santuario de Guadalupe is not a prime tourist attraction and even quite off the beaten tourist path. I found it on my way to the Rail Runner station. That’s okay with me. I get the devotion to the Virgin de Guadalupe, having traveled many times in Mexico. I am happy to see Catholics honoring Guadalupe & unlike my daughter, who sees the Marian-worshiping Catholics as ecumenically misguided, I adore this South of the Border Virgin. Like most of Santa Fe, this small church located in the Railyard District, features thick adobe walls and excellent religious statuary. In fact, the Virgin de Guadalupe statue out in front on the sidewalk was blessed in Mexico City by Pope John Paul(my fav Pope until Pope Francis!) before making its journey to New Mexico to be installed in its current location. Though small in size, the Santuario is not small in grandeur. There is a unique sense of faith and reverence here amid the simplicity of the Sanctuary. The Rose Garden has a sign in it that states that this Sanctuary is the oldest extant one in the United States honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe. I absolutely LOVED it! 5 UnilocalSTARS for our Lady of Guadalupe, always! Amen.

The Santuario de Guadalupe is a beautiful church in downtown Santa Fe. The main altarpiece was brought all the way from Mexico City. The interior of the church is a rustic take on Mexican baroque. On the altarpiece, the Holy Trinity is depicted as three identical bearded men. Such depictions of the Trinity as male triplets provoked a condemnation from the Vatican in the 19th century. This somewhat sheds light on the controversy when in Santa Fe, a lesbian Hispanic artist depicted Our Lady of Guadalupe as a woman in a flower bikini. The Virgin Mary in a bikini isn’t OK, nor is depicting God as three men. The man who was in charge of tours/history was helpful and devout. There is a beautiful Perpetual Adoration Chapel. The pastor here gave excellent homilies; they also had a young adult group. The church dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe is great for everyone.
