Holy cow. If you are: a) a life long swimmer b) triathlete c) glutton for punishment you need to go to this workout. It is the the single best workout for triathlon race simulation for the swim portion. I rolled out to this too many times to count with the homies at Triathlon Training Series. It’s a combo of a swim, mass start and sand run(simulates run from swim to T1 in a race). Even if you don’t live in Santa Monica, you should hit this workout up. Don’t forget to pay for parking!!! Parking control is out early. No joke. Don’t half step. Come here to get as close to race experience before doing your 1st triathlon.

Although most of my swim training is done in pools, the OSC is the cornerstone of my open water training. Speed sets throughout the year give practice for sighting, entry, and exits. If you swim OSC consistently, you’ll also experience a huge range of open water conditions: smooth as glass to 8 foot faces, cross currents, rips, fog, crystal clear conditions, everything. Having all that experience sure comes in handy on race day. And, even though all levels can swim the OSC(as long as you can swim 500 yards without assistance), there’s always a local who’s who of elite triathletes, open water swim champions, and the like at the OSC. Tons of fun. TONS. Go for breakfast with your friends after the swim. You have my permission to be a little late to work… It will do your spirit good. This is why we live in SoCal, yes? Oh, and dolphins are frequently swimming with us. Yes, dolphins. Plus, Konrad’s got jokes.

A fantastic open water swimming workout for all levels and abilities. Loops around a buoy so no fear of being left behind. You’re never off the back… you’re just way ahead. We get everyone from top ITU pros and elite ocean swimmers to totall n00bs. Hit us up on Facebook(Ocean Speed Circuit) and join us from April through end of September, every year since 2002!

This is an ad-hoc event that occurs every Wednesday 6:30AM to about 7:30am from April to end of Sept. lead by LA Triathlon Club. During those months, many triathletes and open water swimmers make this their weekly ritual. At times hundreds of people show up to swim! Whenever I go to this event, it just makes my day and I almost feel like being on a beach holiday. The meeting location is at the lifeguard tower 26, very close to Barnard Way and Ocean Park Blvd. Parking is available on street and also in lot(payment required). It’s also very close to some outdoor showers and bathrooms so you can rinse down and change before going home(or work!). One key thing is that no lifeguard is on duty at the time so you should be a proficient swimmer before considering going into the water. Wetsuits are not required, but highly recommended.
