Great Happy Hour. 4 – 7 and again 9-close. They are FAST even when it’s crowded. Marylin Mon-Roll and Jessica ALBAcore roll are delicious.

Sushi Mon is a great spot to go to on a week night from 9pm to midnight if you’re craving sushi. From tempura shrimp rolls to spicy tuna California rolls to coconut shrimp tempura peanut butter rolls, they have the best happy hour menu for about $ 6 — $ 9 a roll. If you’re looking for a Sapporo large beer, they have pitchers for $ 8, $ 4 for a glass, and $ 2 for a small beer. They also have sake shots for $ 3. Very good food for a cheap price… But with cheap prices come crowds & extremely slow, un-attentive service. That’s why they get 3 stars. We asked for water… It never came. We asked for miso soup & that also never came. It’s a shame. I would probably come back here with just another person and not a large group… I’d also make sure to clear out my evening just in case the service is a huge failure like my first visit.

My friend and I went here on a whim after a free summer concert at the Pier at around 9pm. This sushi place made our night, there were even great happy hour specials, even on saki! It was really crowded with a long wait but we luckily found seats at the bar immediately where we could see the chefs prepare everything. The sushi was incredible! It was fresh and unique compared to typical Japanese sushi options, I highly recommend the monster roll! Plan on going again!

True, it’s NOT authentic Japanese Sushi — but these Koreans get pretty creative with the rolls. Do the Happy Hour Sushi. Good beer prices($ 2 Sapporo). I’d give them another star, but the lack of Nigiri and Sashimi cannot let me truly taste their fish.

I came here on a Sushi craze and was really hungry. That is probably why I didn’t check Unilocal which I wish I had considering everything people write about here is true, the service is mediocre and food is terrible. The highlight of my meal was definitely the $ 2 sapporo 16 oz. and that’s it, after I had 1 handroll that was very very fishy I couldn’t really eat anything else, so i chugged my beer which gave me a huge buzz and left.

I got off of work and saw Sushi Mon from work and decided I would give it a try. Upon entering I was greeted by the sushi chef, he was nice and had me sit at the sushi bar. I ordered the Takoyaki(fried octopus balls), miso soup, as well as maguro(tuna), unagi(eel), and tamago(egg) nigiri. We’ll start with what I got first, the miso soup. It had good flavor, but it did not have much miso flavor, it was more of a reconstituted shiitake mushroom dashi with enoki and tofu cubes. Next I received the maguro and tamago nigiri. First and foremost, I love sushi rice, so it’s the first thing I look for in sushi, and this was subpar. Not the worst I’ve had by any means, but it wasn’t sticky enough, but it was overly sweet. My assumption is that the rice didn’t have enough mirin/rice wine vinegar incorporated with the sugar or it was improperly brought to room temperature. Next, the maguro. The tuna was delicious, it had no smell, there was minimal marbling, it was very light and melted in the mouth, but there was not a great depth of flavor to the fish itself. This was my favorite though. After that I tried the tamago, which had an almost cloyingly sweet flavor in combination with the rice. The soy sauce cut the sweetness a bit. The unagi had good flavor, but texturally it felt like the prepackaged brand of eel that most of America gets. I will say it did taste awesome. Lastly the takoyaki came out, it had a sauce that I was hoping was going to be mustard based, but it wasn’t, but that’s neither here nor there. The takoyaki was too firm, it was on the starchier side of the spectrum, and while I like my takoyaki a bit more firm, it was closer to a rice starch hushpuppy. The octopus in it wasn’t diced, it was bigger chunks, and it was under salted. There was also no negi(Japanese green onion) or bonito inside or outside, as well as no accompanying terimayo. The prices were alright, but the food did not live up to my standards. The reason it is a 2 instead of 1 is because the staff was very polite and attentive, they also had good beer prices, but I won’t be back.

I don’t get this place in the least. Stopped in there about 8:30 — 9pm last night with a few friends that wanted to eat there and it was pretty packed and I have NO idea why. The sushi was mediocre at best, they blast the music, and service is totally spotty. Our waitress was pretty nice, but the hostess was completely rude and kept trying to obviously get us to move along, even though at the time we were actually waiting on a multitude of rolls we had ordered. I had to laugh at one reviewer’s comments below that describe the sushi as tasting like sea lion’s ass. Hilarious! Funny and maybe not totally applicable but definitely not the best tasting sushi around. I am quite positive I would never go here again.

We got there on Wednesday around 7:30 and were seated immediately. We sat there for a while before, I got tired of waiting and motioned for waitress to at least take our order. The food came out, way before the beers and sake, and as soon as it did, a bunch of gnats emerged and began swarming around the food. We mentioned it to the waitress, who tried to laugh it off and say that they were attracted to the sweet aroma of the soy sauce. Awesome. When a gnat got into my beer, I asked her to please take the beer back and take it off the receipt because we were leaving. She was more than a bit reluctant, and tried to offer me a bottle beer or something else, before I said«No thanks, we’re pretty grossed out and want to pay and leave.» I’ll never step foot in here again.

I was taken here to lunch by some of my voiceover friends. The prices were amazingly cheap and the food to me. was amazing. However, I’m pretty sure a lot of the dishes are not traditional or authentic… so if you’re precious about that. then maybe not. Me, personally… loved it… delicious and super great value. If I’m dining again in Santa Monica… I’m going here. Didn’t think that you could possible get lunch in SM for $ 7

3 stars — ok lunch spot, choose wisely, convenient Another great lunch spot in Santa Monica. The trick is know how and what to order. If I am starving I order the teri chicken combo if not I go somewhere else or carefully order a big sushi roll combo. Its not exactly cheap but relatively speaking its an affordable alternative to the adjacent 5 star restaurants. The wait may take a bit during lunch but its worth it if you’re with friends or co workers. Sushi is not spectacular but its never been bad as some reviewers suggested. Some rolls have been weird but just avoid the fusion and you’re ok. I have noticed that real picky /non adventurous people don’t like sushi mon. Well. most of them dont like sushi LOL. I do admit the service is kinda wacky. The cable tv service is weird too. And the non operating bbq grills too!!!

I have been to this joint a couple of times. The décor is like any other sushi place around the west side. The staff is friendly, but not to helpful in recommending rolls. Once I ordered a roll that was suppose to come with crab, they gave me lobster instead and didnt say anything. Not a huge deal but not too professional either. The food is decent for the price. I have found less expensive and better quality sushi places on the west side so I cannot say I will be back to Sushi Mon. I really expected more from this place.

the plane was about to land at LAX and the high school baseball team from Boise shrieked in absolute delight as we flew past In-N-Out on Sepulveda in Westchester. i groaned from the slight motion sickness. I never have the appetite for a burger after any flight, even after I de-planed from my 6-week trip in India(no beef there). I was thinking Sakura in Marina Del Rey but I had already found street parking and J wanted to eat sushi in SM, so it worked out. I went on autopilot afoot and we found ourselves here for the second time. We ordered three rolls. He chose the Rain Tuna $ 14(spicy tuna, jalapeño, red onion with seared tuna on top) and Sunset Roll $ 12(cucumber, avocado, asparagus, 4 kinds of fish and smelt egg). I ordered the Soft Shell Crab Roll $ 11. As you can see, these rolls are not cheap. Sadly, they didn’t wow either. On our previous visit, we had the Volcano roll, which was salmon wrapped, inverted sushi with avocado, crab stick, and mayonnaise. We also had an order of spicy tuna maki, cucumber maki, and california maki. it was also A-OK. $ 1.50 hot tea is a no-no for me, especially if it’s served lukewarm, diluted and refills were scarce. Though I don’t regret not getting an In-n-Out, this place is overall, a meh. See pics!

Me no likey no fishy sushi even if the portions are large. We ordered a roll that was so spicy it ALMOST covered up the taste of what would appear to be. old dead fish. My tuna tasted like the Santa Monica Pier smells when the seaweed comes in and rots on the beach for days. You know the smell. Maybe I hit Sushi Mon on a bad day– I had no complaints about the portions or the service but there is better sushi to be consumed. I just couldn’t get that nasty fish taste out of my mouth for hours which just killed it for me. I really love the West Hollywood location and had higher hopes for the one in my hood. Oh well.

A little pricey but they have decent sushi. Their lunch specials are pretty good. A lot of people have complained about the service but we didn’t have any problems. Our lunch specials came out to around $ 18 and included miso soup, a roll and a salad. We also ordered appetizers. The portion sizes were generous and the sushi was decent for being right in the middle of Santa Monica. Obviously, if you want really great sushi, you don’t come to the promenade. But if you’re in the area and are really craving sushi, this place isn’t too bad.

Yikes yikes yikes! The sushi here tasted like Sea-Lion’s Asshole. Not that I know what that would taste like, but just let your imagination run wild with that. We wandered by this place on a Saturday at lunchtime. A sense of foreboding overcame me as I glanced at the menu outside, but the NYF convinced me to go in with her, because I was getting increasingly hungry and crabby. Should’ve trusted my instincts. As if the fact that the restaurant was completely empty on a Saturday at lunchtime shouldn’t have been enough of a clue. Sushi was just plain inedible. NYF spat hers into a napkin. I drowned a piece of a cut roll in enough soy sauce to overlook the horrible fishy taste long enough to swallow before my gag reflex kicked in. We asked for the check and left. Our waitress never even asked us how our food was, even though the sushi was almost completely untouched. I imagine they’re used to this kind of thing by now.

I used to like this place a lot. I first ate here in 2006, but the quality has gone down a bit, but I still like it! We just went here the day before Thanksgiving last week and we came here in 2007 after my brother’s graduation. Do not order the fusion stuff. It’s overpriced. It’s basically 6 California Rolls with whatever you ordered on top. It does not like look like the pictures. The other traditional rolls are a better value. We had the Las Vegas Roll, which had cream cheese in it — yum! Rainbow Roll — that tuna with the pepper on top was so good! The two fusion rolls were meh(I think it was 3rd Street and Baked Scallop Roll), not worth the price, we should’ve gotten one of the regular rolls. One of the fusion rolls had a lot of Korean red pepper sauce and rice cake that you put in Korean rice cake New Year’s soup. I was like wth! Also, the miso soup had onions in it. A lot of them. ick. I didn’t like how they charged me for tea. I asked for tea and they gave us green tea at a whopping $ 1.50 a cup without asking me what kind. If you’re going to charge me for something, I want to be able to choose what I’m getting. This place is cozy and I like the high interior. It’s clean and the booths make the dinner more private. I like that. The service was pretty good and they were responsive. An upside was gelato at Angelato’s and shopping at Zara! hehe

I had been here several times, and have had mixed feelings about it. My roommate loves this plaec, but most of the time I am not a very big fan. However, the last time I went(about a week ago) I had a much better experience. The sushi was fresh and our food came out fairly quickly(probably because it was pretty empty at the time). The seaweed salad was really bad. So bad that after a couple bites from two people, it was shoved aside and never looked at again. We also got the Rainbow Roll, Shrimp Roll, and Hot NIght Roll, which were all fairly good, but a bit more pricey then what they are worth. Then again, what isn’t in Santa Monica? Overall, not a bad place, but there are better ones in this town.

Maybe actually 2.75 stars. I work nearby so this is a quick few steps to get some food. Can do take-out or sit-in. The lunch specials are good, but not great. A roll(or other specialty main course), 5 pieces of sushi, and a miso soup(if you dine-in) for anywhere from 12 – 16 dollars. With a drink, tax and tip, it’s about $ 20/person. For a sushi lunch, it’s pretty typical in price for what it is. Fortunately while I appreciate great sushi and realize the differences between good and bad, I’m not a sushi snob, so the quality of the food is acceptable. There’s enough variety for people to choose different things if everyone wants to share, family-style. I wouldn’t ever come here for anything other than lunch, but there’s not a lot of great options for sushi at lunchtime around this area that won’t break the bank. If you need some quick food, and have some desire for a roll or a salad, stop by and just sit at the counter. But make sure you flag down the waitresses — they’re just not that attentive.

Not impressed. Sorry. My friend and I came in to Sushi Mon after we find out the wait at Musha near-by is like half hour even though it’s already 9pm on a Thr. nite.(Now, that’s good business there.) We shoulda know by the contrast between Musha & Sushi Mon. When we came in, there seems to be fair amount of customers. We got seated by the grill area since there’s this huge fan above us. The miso soup was served cold. I have to find the manager to get the waitress to get our bill. The waitress came back right away for the bill even though me & my friend was still in the middle of a conversation. She even interrupt our conversation for the bill. –I’m thinking ‘we couldn’t find you for 10 min. and now you want the bill for life-&-death at this very moment!!!’. So, yes, that one star is on the minus-point scale.
