I can’t say I wasn’t warned. But a friend and I were starving, she’s veggie so we thought, well, why not just try it? After all neither of us is very picky, how bad could it be. Answer? *B*A*D* As in this is quite possibly the worst food I’ve ever had of any kind. Neither of us ate more than a few bites. When the waitress asked if we wanted it wrapped to go, we both said NO, loudly and firmly. Avoid. The semi-cute décor doesn’t make up for the terrible, terrible food. Never again, even though I can walk there. Not on a bet.

Pretty basic thai. I ate in once, took out once. It’s fairly close to my apt, so I had to try it. The one time I ate there, there was a table of about 15 hipster teenagers loudly singing. Not to the great rock they were playing, mind you, but some tune of their own. Quite the dissonant experience. Chicken pad thai… fine. Green curry with chicken… fine. Open until 3 am every night? Extra star for that.

Open late… Good. Fast service… Good. Décor…Kinda random. Tom Yum Noodles… GOOD!!! Get them. You’ll be happy.

Great ambiance, decent food, cute staff, convenient location. It deserves more than a 2.5 star average. 3.5 would be my ideal range for this place.

This place is a little more than a three, but not yet a four. The food was surprisingly good and the service was pretty fast. The décor is pretty half assed and not as good as the Sunset location. The way the posters are hung on the wall really is mind boggling; there are some that are practically an inch from the ceiling, which makes me wonder if they are covering up stains or other creepy things. Someone needs to come in here to give this place a makeover. They should also turn the rear portion into a bar or something to spice this place up, not to mention that Wilshire could use a few more places to get a drink. Our server was very attentive, perhaps too attentive, but you can’t really complain about that. — Take Metro #720, 20, or Big Blue Bus #2.

The best 2 things about this place, are the convenient location and how it stays open so late and delivers late as well! The food was OKAY, we got these noodles and there was a piece of string in it! ‘Nuff said

I have to agree that the service when you dine in is at times horrible. However we must remember the vibe of the restaurant. It is obviously an establishment that does not pride themselves on customer service. The patrons go here for quick, amazing Thai food and a super chill atmosphere. So instead of getting angry just speak up and enjoy a cold beer. Furthermore, Toi is one of the only places that delivers late. I am talking about 3 am home from the bars and in need of food late. The delivery is always quick, within 20 – 30 mins, its hot and fresh. So I recommend calling in for a delivery and enjoying some great food in the comfort of your own home!

This is my favorite place to take a date! The thai food here is great but the atmosphere is like from out of some rock and roll dreamland. They always have great classic rock playing in the background, there are signs of John Lennon, the beattles, pink floyd and Led Zeppelin just to name a few. Its definitely eclectic in the good sense of the word. I really love their Pot Stickers and the skewered chicken is delish. The Thai Iced Teas are great too. They have their own parking in a small lot that sometimes fills up. I noticed some people have ragged on the service. It must be hit or miss because the dozen or so times I have been in here its been totally fine. They were always attentive and friendly and chill, which to me is all you can ask for out of your waitstaff. Definitely check this place out if you are jonesing for Tai and atmosphere.

Slim psuedo-goth waitress has a bit too much attitude for me. I like Toi Thai and they are in the neighborhood. They are a definite option for doing Thai. BUT I have to say that they don’t beat Poom Thai. Each time I’ve eaten here the food came out pretty quickly and the waitress was lame. She was so «put out» that she would actually have to be a server. I also can’t shake the image of their temporary closing recently by the health department. I won’t go into details, but let’s just say some ill feelings are lingering. Don’t half step. This is the place you order delivery or take out.

Hmmm. So looks like other Unilocalers aren’t huge fans of Toi. Well, I have a soft spot for this funky place. I don’t care if it’s authentic Thai … I wouldn’t know authentic Thai if it shot me in the face with a ping pong ball. So, that established … Toi’s dishes are really delicious. I just went again last night and we had the Prik King, Massaman curry, Panang curry and Pad Thai. All were wonderful with the Prik King really leading the pack. The flavors are hearty and satisfying, the chicken is thigh meat but cooked nicely so it’s tender and without gristle. The tofu falls short … they use a very firm tofu and it’s a bit chewy for my tastes. The brown rice is unique and excellent. We washed it down with some warm sake. The service is touch and go, but last night we were well taken care of. If I’m in the mood for Thai, and I’m anywhere near lower Wilshire, I definitely hit up Toi.

In the realm of what is possible for Thai food, Toi isn’t all that bad in my opinion. First, where in L.A. can one get TRULY authentic Thai food? Toi’s Rockin’ Thai is just as much of a bastardization of Thai cuisine as most Thai restaurants. Second, Toi doesn’t claim to be upscale, zen, haute cuisine… it is supposed to be «Rockin’ Thai», whatever that is. Thus, you can expect rock music to be playing. For those who might be unfamiliar with the genre, it is usually played quite loud. All of the memorabilia hanging all over the place isn’t necessary, but if you are into rock, rock stars, and the like, it’s pretty interesting to look at while you’re there. I wouldn’t make a special trip to see it. The late night hours are cool because L.A. doesn’t have a large variety of late night grub. For those of you who are partiers, can you even distinguish the difference between what tastes good and what doesn’t when you are drunk and/or stoned? I’ve been here a number of times, although not recently since I moved out of the area. I wouldn’t make a special trip here for the Thai, either, but if I were in the area I might drop in if I wanted some decent Tom Kha Kai. It’s good and it serves 2 for $ 9. I’m also a fan of their red curry, pineapple fried rice, and they make a tasty Thai iced tea. It’s decent food for a reasonable price, served in a rock-n-roll lovers environment. Good for groups, good for kids and teens, not so good for grandparents… unless they’re hard of hearing already.

Toi on Wilshire. In a nutshell, it’s the same mediocre food as the one on Sunset, but far less freaks to gawk at… so really, what’s the point? Toi is not good Thai food and while I don’t pretend to be an expert on all things Thai, I do know that what they are slinging here is the crap. To give you an idea of how bad it is, I came here on a date when I was 19. At the time, I thought Subway was a good sandwich. I thought coffee was Starbucks. I still wore blue eyeliner for Christ’s sakes and had a totally underdeveloped foodie palate and I still knew this was crap and tasteless and just yucky. I tried it again a few years later on another date and yep, still gross. My thoughts are this, the Toi on Sunset is at least interesting to look at and you get the wild Hollywood people and an occasional celeb sighting, but why would you go to eat crappy food on the West side with no atmosphere whatsoever? How do you say, «this makes no sense to me» in Thai. Oh yeah, Toi.

Ate here last nite, food was decent, but nothing I would crave for again. Hours of operation are nice though. I would suggest the Pad-Thai, moist and one of the better dishes. The bummer are the prices. Too expensive for what its serving.

There is better Thai in LA. .. namely, in Thai town. But there’s no other Thai place that plays 70’s and 80’s movies on miniature TV’s and has such questionable music and cinema memorabilia. It’s an experience, and a funny one at that. Stick with some noodle arrangement that’s not too complicated, and you’ll spend your meal time laughing with friends over the sheer quirkiness of the place. The last time I was there, I believe the owner was walking around in a pronounced sulk — looking all Joe Perry-ish and angry in his tight black jeans.

The place actually deserves a 1 but I think the fact that its open till 3am deserves another point. The food here is way below average but if you’re eating at 1am, then you really can’t complaint. The guy that was serving us was really spaced out — wonder what he was on? Needless to say that service was pretty terrible. When the food came, he spilled some food over my friend. I ordered a dish that had an ‘extra spicy’ warning but it was pretty bland.

The two stars are for restaurant décor and music. Otherwise, BAD. The service was terrible. verrrrry slow and somewhat rude. But environment aside, the food was disgusting. The chicken especially– it was a weird grey /brown color and I was thinking, is this chicken? eww They are open until 3a 7days/wk so if I’m ever in a bind for a late-night craving, I’d maybe go back but definitely ordering a vegetarian option next time.

do you ever have one of those moments where you stop everything you are doing, and say to yourself, «gee, i would really like to listen to rock and roll and eat thai food while i do so, and maybe, just maybe, be surrounded by suspicioulsy authentic rock and roll memorabilia as well» and does this usually happen to you say, during the middle of the night? well, i won’t tell anyone the reason why you’d have such a craving except that you had to have been smoking weed on and off for at least two and half hours to have such a craving. HOWEVER, if this IS the case, toi is definetely the place to go( ). the food is marginal at best but is no use complaning on authenticity. oh i am sorry, where you born in thailand and that’s what makes you such a quote and unquote«rad thai food connoseuir»? give me a break! just for your information, 95% of all mexican food restaurants in the l.a. area do not actually make food that tastes authentically like, well mexican food. take my word for it, i grew up on the genuine article and i’ll take a pepsi challenge over anyone who says otherwise. it’s no different with thai. going back to my point though, if you are at toi’s it’s because you’ve been high for what medical staffs call, «a prolonged period of time». so you won’t have to worry and in fact, you won’t even care about taste. marijuana takes care of that! PLUS, they have those«rooms of knowledge”-we call them restrooms here in america-whereby you exchange your body’s excess fluids for all sorts of new and interesting facts! like…did you know a «jiffy» is 0.001 of a second? or that you forget about 80% of everything you learn in a day? and you know, it’s true. that’s why i only remember 20% of my toi eating experience and why you’ll remember even less about what i just wrote.

Just blech. Blech blech blech. The only reason it gets two stars is cuz it’s open late and it has sort of fun atmosphere after a few drinks. This is the worst Thai I’ve ever had. The Pad Thai was especially wrong. Soooooo not going back.

Toi is open late, which is probably its biggest selling point. They have a tuk tuk, a 3-wheel autorickshaw that is common throughout southeast Asia and India that uses an ancient 250cc 2-stroke Vespa engine, sitting right in the window, which is pretty sweet. The last time I came in, they were playing the Led Zeppelin Remasters — YES!!! That is what I want to hear when I’m eating. I’ve also heard the Sex Pistols, which I figured, based on the picture of Johnny Rotten on the menu. They’ve generally got nostalgiac film or television playing on the old TV’s — like the one in your grandparents’ den when you were a kid — like Rock N Roll High School or Carebears, sans sound. The food isn’t authentic, as one of my friends whose mom is Thai Chinese flogs endlessly. I know already. That said, the food tastes pretty good, most of the time, and I love the Saigon Spring Rolls, though they cost eight goddamned dollars — as much as the Toi Noodles(glass noodles, tofu, and veggies in a red curry and coconut milk broth) I generally get, despite being an appetizer. In fact, all the appetizers are priced like entrees, which isn’t cool. So while the place itself is cool, it’s open late, and the food tastes good, some items just don’t make sense in terms of pricing, and moreso, the last three times I’ve been here, it’s taken days for my stomach to recover. I don’t know what precisely is doing it, I don’t know why it’s doing it, especially because my stomach is made of iron: I can eat raw habaneros and not blink, and yet, somehow, this stuff just ravages me. Is the food good enough to justify two days of nasty tummy grumbling, periodic nasuea, and booty monster? Well, I have been back three times since, and two of those, I got sick. But I don’t know if I’ll be going back soon; while the late-night eating options in Santa Monica are slim pickins, La Cabana and Swingers have never lingered in my system for a few days afterwards.
