I had asked the fine people of Santa Rosa on reddit which places have the best donuts and they suggested a few places and said to go to this place as well, coming from Portland where we have Voodoo Doughnut! such a unique place no one tops them! Sorry Sonoma County! Anyhow upon entering the shop, it’s pretty dated, and thankfully I remembered that it was cash only, woman that was there wasn’t friendly, but the plain glazed donuts I got were fresh! super fresh along with the cheese Danish. Would recommend but, don’t try to strike up a conversation it’ll just be a fail. Overall fresh donuts, could be updated and could accept cards, since it’s the day and age of that…

I’ll admit it: I’m kind of a doughnut snob. But, I can still appreciate a cheap, mediocre doughnut when it calls. That being said, Tan’s stakes its claim as the first doughnut I’ve ever thrown away. My husband and I stopped by on a Saturday in the late morning. The guy behind the counter was clearly not enthused about having to dish out doughnuts. When we did get ours, they were awful. At least 2 – 3 days old. If there was ever a time to bake fresh, you’d think Saturday morning would be that time, but alas. It was stale and had very little flavor. It was like biting into a doughnut that sat in a box on your kitchen counter for one too many days, except that it wasn’t very tasty to begin with. I took a couple bites and couldn’t take it anymore, over half of it ended up in the trash. Sorry, Tan’s, we won’t be back.

I have frequented Tan’s because it’s downtown near my office. The donuts are pretty standard and well priced. Nothing mind blowing, but it’s kind of hard to screw up a maple bar, isn’t it? The people are not overly friendly, no, but if I had to be up at some ungodly hour making donuts I wouldn’t be sparkly and cheery either. Décor is meh, this is a place for takeout donuts only.

I came across reviews for Tan’s Donuts and had a chuckle. There have been a half dozen occasions for me to pick up a donuts(casual business meetings) from Tan’s and I’m not entirely sure why everyone is raving. The donuts are definitely priced very well but if you think these are super-duper pastries you need to try somewhere not named 7 – 11. And if you think these guys are making these donuts fresh on a daily basis you are mistaken. I have no problem with Tan’s and will continue to pick up donuts there on an irregular basis but let’s not go crazy over a standard but inexpensive donut shop. For the record — cake donuts are where it’s at. Those Crispy Crème sugar things are a nightmare.

The donuts are pretty good, but then it is hard to argue with donuts, right? The décor looks like it has not been updated since the 1970’s — and maybe it has not. It is kind of dingy and dumpy and looks like it could use a could scrubbing and a fresh coat of paint. The folks working there always seem like they would rather be somewhere else. Bottom line, get your donut and get out. If you are looking for a place to enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend, go somewhere else.

My best friend has an OBSESSION with donuts right now. She goes to Tan’s almost every day before work. So, in order to olblige her fascination, we stopped by Tan’s on our way to the city for a quick, carby, sweet. The set-up is such as your typical donut case, with clear glass blocking those sugar cravers from just going for it! You can see all the varieties! I will admit that I was quite impressed with how many different varieties a donut shop can manage! It took me a very long time to make up my mind, as I am already undecisive. I finally went for an old-fashioned with glaze. I was not super impressed. It wasn’t stale or anything, but it would have been much better warm. I could have probably asked for them to warm it up. My husband, however, had the apple fritter. Those things were huge! When he first pointed out that that was his decision, I thought he was joking. I tried it, and the softer insides were so delicious. I wasn’t a fan of the more crumbly edges, but the apple and cinnamon combination was AWESOME!

They have the HUEGEST apple fritters I’ve ever seen. I haven’t tried one, I’m intimidated. Apple fritter punked me man. Lets ride on that fool. One other point of note is that they sell various«eggles». Noteworthy if you take the bus to Grocery Outlet then have like 20 or 30 minutes still to wait after shopping for the return bus, since the only other places to eat nearby are Chelino’s and the gas station. Otherwise just your typical donut selection and bad coffee. The cake donuts are pretty good.

On my two visits thus far the apple fritters were done perfectly! I actually find that many other donut shops typically OVERcook the apple fritters and they’re almost burnt. Not so with my fritters from Tan’s. Dark on the outside but still soft inside with plenty of flavor. Also, the second time I dropped by here I was the last customer of the day as they were closing up. They were kind enough to let me in and the gentleman behind the counter gave me a second apple fritter for free. Nice people! I will certainly go back again. :)

Great donuts, but my only compaint is that they still only accept cash. I’ve had to run down to the ATM on several occasions.
