If you enjoy the film Sideways there’s a good chance you’ll want to experience the feeling of being in wine country. A few things you’ll need are a car, a good cd of tunes, a bundle of cash for wine purchases(bottles are usually between $ 20 – 40) and room reservations. It’s a big area, with about 70+ wineries/tasting rooms. I suggest you pick up a copy of Wineries of SB County, available at any tasting room up there. Pick one area(AVA) on the map and concentrate on visiting the wineries/tasting rooms in that area. If you like Pinot Noir concentrate on the Santa Rita hills. If you like Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon try Santa Ynez area, including the little town of Los Olivos. Don’t try to visit more than 3 or 4 places unless you do like me and bring a foam cup to spit tastes of wine into. Swallowing 5 – 81 ½ ounce tastings per winery can get you looped after just 2 places! There are many tasting rooms in the tourist town of Solvang and the country town of Los Olivos, so no car is needed there. If you drive be sure to fill up once you arrive in the valley, as it can be a long drive up unfamiliar canyons, with no gas stations around. The roads are usually pretty nice and smooth, but there can be little animals running across the road, hard curves and no shoulders. As far as rooms, there are lots of clean, reasonable-priced(under $ 90) rooms in Buellton and Solvang. Weekend prices get high, but midweek you can stay at the famous Windmill Inn in Buellton for about $ 70/night.

The entire Santa Ynez wine country is gorgeous, as evidenced by the film Sideways. Firestone is definitely one of the better wineries in the region, you can picnic on the grounds, and there’s a cool hiking trail on the premises as well. This map from the Sideways website is actually a nifty way to tour the area: . Do your best Miles and Jack, have fun.
