I made an apt. for myself and my husband with Passport Health in Sarasota FL to get shots for an upcoming trip. My doctor recommended them since they did not give some of the shots in their office. I was NOT informed in advance that they did not take Medicare or insurance and that they charged an office fee to give the shots on top of the cost of the shots. We were also told by DeeDee that Medicare did not cover the Typhoid vaccine at all. Their price for the 4 shots we needed was super expensive. Around $ 200 each shot. It was going to cost me and my husband over $ 1,000 to get all the shots we needed. We chose to leave there after hearing the cost & went to Walgreens &CVS& found that they both give all shots if the vaccines are ordered in advance. All the shots were covered in part at the Pharmacies by Medicare & co-insurance, even the Typhoid. But, since we were so close to the date of our trip the pharmacy recommended that we go to the Sarasota County Health Department. It turned out to be right across the street from the Passport Health in downtown Sarasota. All shots including the Typhoid were covered by Medicare & our co-insurance at the Health Dept. The cost that we do have to pay was even less there than at the pharmacy. We do have a small additional payment to make as they were not covered entirely. I think we will have paid out of pocket around $ 200 for all vaccines needed for the both of us. DeeDee at Passport Health is very knowledgeable and informative. That is why I do not understand why she did not inform us in advance about the cost we would incur at their office. We could have made an intelligent decision if we had known & not waisted their time or ours. I called our Primary Care Physician and they were unaware that Passport Health did not take insurance or Medicare & will let their patients know from now on. And guess what? The Public Health Department was not aware of that either. They said they have sent people to them when they had no appointments available. They said they would inform people when they recommend them from now on. My complaint is not being informed in advance and having a chance to make the decision as to where we should get the shots. We just went on the recommendation of our doctor not knowing that they were just a private business.
