Flying Beagle Books is wonderful. So much so that I am willing to drive from Chapel Hill, about 20 miles, just to stop by. Every time I visit this bookstore I find a few first editions that I must have. I currently own an Amazon Kindle and I read on my Android phone but having a physical book is a great feeling. If you are ever in the Saxapahaw area I strongly suggest you stop by. This bookstore may not be the largest in the area but it has the highest quality. You will find some amazing books and won’t have to fight through all the clutter. You will also find that the owner is very nice. He actually suggested many time travel books for me to read. One that is available online in a PDF format is «All You Zombies». Go check it out now. It is well worth your time. It should take you less than 30 minutes to read and it is wonderful. This is just one of the many golden nuggets I have taken from the Flying Beagle Bookstore in Saxapahaw. If you are around during the summer you can check out the bookstore right before the summer concert series festival. By 4:30 or 5:00 pm you will notice the vendors rolling in. Some of these vendors sell food and antiques. Personally, I think it is worth it to go down on a Saturday afternoon, stop by Flying Beagle Books and then check out the bands that start playing around 6:30 or 7:00 pm. There is plenty to do in Saxapahaw and the owner of Flying Beagle Books will be more than happy to tell you the history of the town and direct you to some of the more exciting adventures.

This is the cutest bookstore. It’s small, much smaller than it appears, but it’s the type of bookstore that makes me want to take my time. And knowing it’s a used bookstore with all kinds of treasures to discover, is even better. When I walked in, Roswell, the resident beagle wandered out to greet me, get his head scratched, and show me around. Compliments to the owners for that cute little tie he was wearing. Dogs or cats in bookstores are just cool. There’s an impressive selection of books in this small shop. My go-to section is science fiction, and there was an unusually good mix of recent and classic titles. In fact, this new and old mix was repeated in nearly every section of the store. Because of the size of Flying Beagle, there’s no chance to be overwhelmed by row and after row, so it’s manageable. Every possible surface here is filled with books. Near the front door, I saw a section of North Carolina authors and North Carolina travel books. It’s perfect. The two chairs in the front room against the window are a nice addition. If it hadn’t been so late, I would have gladly spent a little time doing some on-the-spot reading. Flying Beagle is a nice break from the big bookstores. It’s a classic, small town used bookstore with a home-like atmosphere. It fits the community well.
