Kugler’s Red Barn

High-​quality All-​American-​made furniture store set in an actual old barn, that also sells upholstery fabrics by the yard. The styles are mostly traditional American — Shaker, country, and simpler styles, not the more elaborate 19^th century American variations on Victorian and pre-​war overstuffed — but they do include a lot of fairly stodgy upholstered styles as well. They claim mostly Amish manufacturers, in small lots, and the basic woods are (supposedly) all American-​grown — cherry, oak, walnut, hickory, and pine in evidence, not sure about maple and cedar, but the staff say they can order almost any piece in one of the basic woods. The owners are also the sales staff so it’s a true small business.
The only thing not great about Kugler’s is the prices, which are full boat retail price. As in, $ 300 for a small cabinet, $ 1000 for a small dining room table, $ 1500 for an armchair, just for a sample. These are not outliers; they’re typical. I’ve bought unfinished pieces of similar manufactured Amish origin at Adirondack unfinished for significantly less, but — those are unfinished and unupholstered, and the quality isn’t really quite as high as the basic stuff at Kugler’s. So it’s not quite a competition so much as different ends of the same spectrum in the same basic vein.
The true differentiator may be that you basically are going to be able to custom-​order a piece with the wood, finish, and upholstery of your choice, for the most part; it’s not true custom furniture as you’re ordering a known type or style but it’s pretty close in terms of customization within the range of choices. And they do have some very nice pieces.
I’m a little reluctant to go to four stars without some evidence as to the long-​term quality of the furniture, but then again you’d be waiting a while for that, presumably, so consider this a placemarker review in the meantime. But I also note I can’t really afford to shop here for anything big, so I am out of my league — take that for whatever it’s worth in terms of the star rating or the credibility of this reviewer.

This place is great. They sell high quality US-​made furniture that isn’t really much more expensive than the imported stuff sold at the bigger stores. This summer, I bought an Amish-​made solid cherry bedroom set and it’s incredibly well made. I chose a simple Shaker style. Even the insides of the dresser drawers are stained and finished. I went back and ordered a dining room set this week.
The store is family owned and the staff are exceptionally knowledgeable, attentive and patient. Yet they don’t hover over you while you’re looking around and there is no pressure whatsoever to place an order. In fact, when I was interested in buying my bedroom set, they were the ones who suggested I go home and think about the options and come back when I had made a decision. They will gladly make print copies of items that you’re considering so that you can write the prices of the various choices and think about them.
My house is a small cottage and in this era of everything being super-​sized, it’s challenging to find furniture with measurements that won’t overpower the rooms. This is the place to go if you have any special requirements like this. Scott can instantly tell you the available sizes of various pieces, often right from memory. Have you ever tried to purchase a standard full bed these days? (Not a queen– or king-​size bed.) I went to several area furniture stores, some of them high-​end stores, and this option was extremely limited or non-​existent in these stores. At Kuglers, I wasn’t treated as if I had just asked for something from the Antiques Road Show.
I haven’t purchased any upholstered furniture (sofas, stuffed chairs, etc.) but from what I can see in the showroom, that is very well made also. After my dining room set arrives, my next purchase will be a TV stand.
