Who isn’t a fan of Stewart’s Shops? Gas, ice cream, snacks, drinks, bathroom and friendly staff. Luckily there is one, or two, in every Warren and Washington County town.

Oh my goodness this place feels old. But it’s the only game in town. And the simple fact is, Stewart’s in general has the best ice cream. It is strange to have a gas station mixed in with an ice cream place, but that’s how Stewart’s is all over the east coast. This particular Stewart’s has picnic table seating inside and only a couple of booths inside. But it’s a wonderful place to go during the summer, enjoy and cone and building those childhood memories for your kiddos.

I spent a few days exploring Schroon Lake. Trust me, this is the best restaurant in town. Ice cream, service, and the view were fantastic.

Yum! Love Stewart’s ice cream! What a surprise when needing to pop off the Northway to use the bathroom to find a Stewart’s to get ice cream as well! There are two bathrooms on the outside of the building near the ice cream window — no frills but clean enough and well stocked. Our ice cream order was taken pretty promptly(there’s a doorbell by the window), and there were plenty of flavors to choose from. There are a couple picnic tables at the Stewart’s itself, but even better is the park across the street right on the lake, where you can eat your ice cream, gaze out over the water, and imagine that you own a lake-side home and motor boat on Schroon Lake(which, after this quick stop, is now my life goal).

Gas station and ice cream. What could be better? Friendly staff and excellent ice cream. Try the pb pandemonium or the mint cookie crumble.

Genius by design. Gas station + Ice Cream Stand = Genius. I never filled up on gas here but I filled up on everything but, meaning ice cream. I just so happened to be on vacation in Schroon(fancy that!), and, well, when on vacation… the tendency to throat double scoop waffle cones increases; vacation justifies ice cream and ice cream validates vacation. Three visits in five days: from passing by «oh okay, let’s eat some ice cream,» to «we just hiked 11 miles let’s ice cream,» to «we’re leaving tomorrow, let’s ice cream,» and each visit they were open to tasting samples, questions on flavors. There aren’t many I trust with scooping ice cream into a waffle cone. Often it’s overscooped and it drips out the cone making it hard to eat. Or, the ice cream gets so runny it starts to drip out of the bottom. Neither the case at Stewart’s. Considering I was with someone who often goes by «P.B.» how do I not order Stewart’s «P.B. Pandemonium?» Especially when you consider it’s P.B. who introduced me to the place. For less than $ 2 you get two heaping scoops of old-fashioned ice cream. The flavors are dense and the cream is rich. Any combination of flavors will suffice, but somehow the raspberry & p.b. pandemonium are a perfect pair. The PB&J of Ice Creams. «If only Ma woulda packed this for lunch everyday!» The bathroom here is a unisex solo stall and is located in the back center of the store(there aren’t any signs). If the picnic table under the canopy is taken, take your ice cream down to the lake bank under the gazebo.
