On a recent trip to Oregon, we learned that Linn County(near Albany and Corvallis) has a lot of covered bridges. We couldn’t fit them all in to our trip but we chose a few to visit and chose to visit Shimanek because it’s red and stood out from some of the others. The current bridge has been in place since 1966 and is still in use. The first bridge documented to be built here across Thomas Creek was built back in 1891. There didn’t seem to be a good place to park and there are a lot of no trespassing signs in the area but we parked on the side of the road and took a few minutes to enjoy the beauty of this bridge and the scenery. Several cars did pass through when we were there so I didn’t attempt to cross it by foot but my husband a quick runner was able to go back and forth in between car traffic. This was our favorite covered bridge in Oregon — though there was a lot of car traffic, it was in a more rural quaint location than the other bridges we visited.
