We visited Kottu Hut today for the first time because of a recommendation from the Exxon gas station attendant next to them. We were not disappointed. We had the Chicken Kottu and Devilled Beef. Both were excellent and we took them for takeout. Lots of flavor. We can’t wait to try more items on the menu. The only downside is that the hut needs some work and it’s not a great location for a food business. A few other places have failed there and I hope this owner won’t suffer the same fate. I still wouldn’t consider this a reason to drop them a star. It works best as a quick eats place that offers restaurant quality food.

Really great food. We’ve been to 4 star restaurants in Sri Lanka, and have a ton of Sri Lankan friends, and this was better than most of the other Sri Lankan food we’ve had. I had the devilled chicken and it was wonderful. Very well cooked and spiced. I like hot food and it was a little milder than I expected but the overall quality made up for it. We also shared the Godamba roti, which was delicious. I don’t recall what my wife had… I was too busy eating. But I had a taste and would have gladly eaten all of it. We shared the string hoppers, and the green curry(I forget the name) instantly brought us back to our trip to Sri Lanka… it was that good. As one of the other posters said, only egg hoppers are needed to achieve perfection. That, and Buffalo Curd with Palm Treacle! For the people whining about the atmosphere… get over it! The food is great! We live in California so we may never be able to get back here… very sad… but if we’re anywhere near we’ll make it a point to return.

After seeing this place and hearing about it for a while I stopped in the other day for lunch. I was the only one in the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. The non-existent ambiance is my least favorite part of this place. It is an old hot dog joint and they haven’t done much to change that. The food on the other had is excellent. I had a wonderful conversation with the woman working and ordered the deviled chicken Medium spice. I like spice and probably could have done the Spicy — but I rather be safe than sorry the first time. The food was excellent, and I tried some soup as well which was very tasty. Definitely will return — and they have some kids menu stuff, so I can bring the little one!

This was our first time here and we went overboard with ordering pretty much everything that looked/sounded good. We started with mutton rolls and Godambha vegetable rolls, delicious! Then the entres started coming out… Chicken Kottu — absolutely delicious! You can ask for your spice level and since I LOVE heat, I asked for hot and it was. Mutton Kottu — equally delicious. Pol rotti with fish curry — was so good that my two boys(7&4) wanted more. The BEST! and the only thing we will get next time, because it was that good, is the roti with black pork curry. Service — this is a fast food joint but the lady who was serving was really pleasant, efficient, and did well by us. Highly recommend and we will be going back.

I was really surprised. It looks like a fast food place so I almost around and left. Really good, familiar south indian style food. Not crazy about the look of the restaurant but everyone has to start somewhere. If you like south indian food or just like tasty food, overlook the appearance and try a meal here. You won’t regret it.

Wonderful flavors. Nice change of pace from Indian or Thai food. Really enjoyed the Mutton Kottu and the black pork roti. Shared calamari and fish cutlets for Appys. Very interested in going back and trying the rest of the menu although it will be tough to not order the Kottu again. You also have to love how it is haunted by Jimmy Buffs hot dog couture. Somehow this place can get away with the ambiance of the worst middle school cafeteria. The Sri Lankan regulars are really nice people. Sounds like such a fabulous culture.

Ordered lamprais with chicken and deviled fish. Lamprais was blast of flavor for taste buds and had a wonderful aroma. Deviled fish was mildly spiced then I expected but they have home made chili sauce to spike your dish as per your tolerance for spice. The owners were very friendly and checked twice if everything was fine. I personally believe that food is just one part of an experience in restaurants. People whom I interact with make a large part of the experience. This is a family run restaurant, so the turn around time for orders may take a while on a busy day(assuming as I haven’t been there during a busy period). There are some trade-offs for having authentic and tasty food, and as a foodie I am always ready to make those trade-offs. Price: All the items are very reasonably priced. Lets do ourselves a favor and not compare it with lunch buffets.

My first visit here was not my first exposure to Sri Lankan food(I have been to Sigiri in Edison and NYC). I had black pork curry and rice($ 7.99). It was ok, but for lunch it does not fare well in comparison to the $ 10 buffet at Red Pepper across the street. It is a small former fast food place, but neat and clean. Nice people and I wish them well. Those who have never had black curry should give it a try.

The lambrais is amazing! So much flavor in the rice. Definitely worth a visit! If you want authentic Sri lankan food cooked by locals this is the place

Yummy stuff. Got the lamprais with black pork curry(delicious), which included a great variety. Some sort of potato/plantain curry, lots of yummy rice with spiced cashews, some perfectly fried onions and a delicious black pork curry, as well as a fried croquette with a tangy, savory filling. Bae got string hoppers, which is a plate of rice noodles served with a bowl of chicken with a flavorful curry sauce and a separate bowl of yellow, fragrantly spiced soup, along with a spiced, lemony, chilli loaded coconut flakes. at first we were unsure of how to eat it, but decided to just put all the flavorful broth and curry onto the noodles, which made it a deliciously moist and spicy dish. This place is awesome! Amazing Indian flavors. I just wish they had better advertising, the storefront is in a very elegant looking wood paneled small building(the«hut» part of kottu hut) but before checking Unilocal I had no idea what kind of place this was or that it’s Sri Lankan cuisine, it’s just weird because the building is shaped like a Dairy Queen/burger joint and I legit thought it was a fried chicken place for the longest time. They need to write in big letters«come in for crazy Sri Lankan food that is served in banana leaves» and at least put the picture of lamprais on the front of the building because I think that dish is very diverse and represents this unique cooking the best.

This was my first time trying Sri Lankan food so I didn’t know what to order. Ended up getting the lamprias plate and it was delicious.

I was so impressed by this place, I felt my visit warranted a review! When I came in to order a meal to go, I asked the owner if they had any vegetarian food and she was so helpful in explaining the menu to me. She was really friendly and we chatted for a fee minutes while my meal was being made. She assured me that they’re changing the banner outside because it says they serve spicy food, and they realized a lot of people prefer milder food, so they’ll make anything medium or mild. I got the Lamprais without meat and it was awesome. It’s a pretty new business in the area, very worth checking out.

Cuisine from Sri Lanka… unbelievable I must say I’m impressed! Everything was excellent. If you like spicy it’s amazing, but they will accommodate your taste buds!

The vegetables kotthu roti was very good. Medium was definitely not at all spicy. When I return, I will definitely try the spicy to see how that compares as I would have liked the food to have been spicier. The portions and prices are fabulous. Now, all the place has to do is get plain hoppers and egg hoppers.

Great new place! I’m super excited to have a Sri Lankan place around. The food is delicious, the place is clean, and the staff is very nice and accommodating. We tried the tuna cutlets, fish patties, mutton rolls; as well as the string hoppers, and chicken curry. The food was simply amazing, it was as good as my Sri Lankan mother-in-law’s. I highly recommend this place to anyone with an open mind and an adventurous palate. I would have given them 5 stars if they had egg hoppers in house. FYI mild really is mild, so if you like a bit of heat ask for medium, and if you dare go for hot.

I really wanted to like this place and had high hopes for it, especially since it is unique to the area but I am pretty grossed out after I left here. I got the devilled beef and the beef rolls. The deveilled beef flavor was good but the meat looked and felt like it was sitting there for days and they just reused it by re frying it. The beef rolls taste was bland to say the least. My friend didnt even eat his meal. He got fish that was just disgusting and looked like it was sitting around for days. These 5 star reviews are hard to believe and most likely are written by the owners friends. I will not be returning and strongly advise everyone else to stay away until they get their act together. I wouldnt be suprised if people have gotten sick here.

Updated 5÷4÷15 — These guys are awesome. They’ve taken community feedback and really put it into play. They now offer mild, medium, and spicy… and for a relatively typical American tongue, the mild IS in fact mild, and the medium is spicy but delicious and tolerable heat-wise. Had the deviled beef again for basis of comparison to the last time, and it’s excellent — was exactly what I expected when I ordered medium. AWESOME joint that I will be back to very, VERY often!
