My wife and I LOVE this place! We drive about 20 mins twice a week have our Blackthorn Cider and the Best Ruben in Seattle… Always leave here with a smile!

Fun little place, and the chicken sandwich really is fantastic! I’m used to bar chicken sandwiches that are fried on the outside and dry on the inside; this chicken was perfectly cooked, moist, and delicious. The dill rye bread was toasted to perfection, and there was just enough cheese to make it delicious but not enough to make it goopy. We’ll be back!

The way I understood it, this place is pretty much like a classic staple of the neighborhood. Well if that’s correct, I think it could use to up its game a little bit as the competition around it increases. I stopped in for a couple of beers and considered food. I changed my mind once I saw other people get their food. It didn’t look disgusting, but it seemed like I could walk a block down the street and find better food for equal(or maybe less?) money. The beers were fine– it’s just beer. I didn’t notice that their HH specials were overly stellar or anything. Meh…

My husband and I started coming here in 1993 when we bought our first house in the neighborhood. Even after all of these years(still in the neighborhood) we love any opportunity to come to 74th St. We went in tonight and noticed that they are celebrating their 25th Anniversary! So hard to believe that we have been coming here for so long. So delighted that 74th St. is still here and just as good as ever. We always love the specials but tonight we went classic. I had the Ruben which is always so delicious. My hubby had the famous chicken sandwich. The thing we love most about 74th St. is that no matter what, you always get the best service and the best food in the neighborhood! My Ruben showed up perfectly toasted, melted cheese, moist corned beef, gorgeous braised purple cabbage and tangy 1000 island dressing. It was absolutely perfect. I paired that with 2 pints of hard cider and I was a happy girl! The chicken sandwich was just as good tonight as it was the first time we had it in 1993 and reminds us why it is still a best seller. In a city full of restaurants that come and go we are so grateful for the amazing staff, delicious food and refreshing beverage at 74th St. Ale House!

74th street ale house is not only a great little pub, but has a surprisingly tasty lunch menu. Don’t be surprised if this place is full for lunch during the weekdays or weekends; there are typically one or two open tables near the back(even if you’re not a regular). The sandwiches and salads have great variety and while I know a few friends really dig the gumbo, I think the rotating soups are the best choice(usually by the soup/salad combo). Tap list has a good amount of variety as well, though only one or two rotating. Although those rotating taps are pretty random: they might have something from Europe one week, and a brew from somewhere smaller(e.g. Roslyn) the next…

See three posted photos from 2÷27÷16: Asian pear cider($ 10), hummus platter($ 10), and the bowl of gumbo($ 11). Crowded neighborhood locale this Saturday evening keeping the pub and kitchen staff hopping!

The only thing I’ve tried here is the Reuben, and its so damn good I don’t know if I’ll ever try anything else. This is the best Reuben I’ve had anywhere in the Seattle area, it is impeccable.

This place has a very limited selection of beers on tap for $ 6 while other places in better locations charge $ 4. The bottled selection is also small and so are the win choices. The food menu is also very short, however the descriptions are very detailed! Our server was all that friendly but atleast we got our beers and food quickly! The reuben was delish because the meat was extremely tender and flavorful. The cabbage didn’t have texture, in fact was a little soggy but the bread was perfectly crispy. I enjoyed it thoroughly, unlike the bland pesto salad that they served on the side lacked flavor. Maybe if they added more finely chopped olives, I could see it balancing out. I doubt I will be coming back unfortunately because I know of many other places that have more value at a cheaper price.

Great food. Go for the Reuben sandwich. Beers could be more desirable but it is an English pub so the selection tends to favorEuropean beers with less local microbrews. A bit cramped if you’re not at the bar but overall good spot

At this point, the Alehouse has taken over as the exemplar of neighborhood pubs for me. The cooks work consistent magic in the kitchen — everything they make is delicious, every single time. Doesn’t matter if it’s 3pm on a Tuesday or in the middle of an SRO Friday night. The taps are great, the crowd is friendly, the staff are total pros; this is my favorite place in the universe to enjoy an Imperial pint.

Went here with a friend the other night. He was really amped about a salad with goat cheese and anyone who even mentions goat cheese in my presence knows they’ve got me hooked. We went and had iced teas to start. The iced tea was different, but very good. We got the jerk chicken strips on happy hour and then each got the goat cheese salad, he got the salad with the gumbo. The goat cheese salad was AWESOME. 2 beautiful bricks of fried goat cheese atop a salad with lots of delicious bits in it. Honestly, I don’t remember much of that salad except how amazing it was… I guess that’s a good thing, yea? Only disappointing thing is their iced tea is home brewed so they do charge for refills. We didn’t realize but should have known. I’ll still be back :)

I like this place for the featured beers, not the food. While the food is pretty decent for bar food, I never think, «Gee, what do I want for dinner? Oh I know…74th Street Ale House!» They have beer cask parties every week, featured nitros and a rotating handle(in addition to their great variety of regular drafts). I always have really good service here and it’s a great neighborhood place to kick back with friends and enjoy a game or beverage on the patio. This place also isn’t «sticky» like some other neighborhood places nearby. Go here if you like a laid back vibe with a cold beer.

It took a very long time to be waited on today… I think it was busier than they were expecting. The waitresses were awesome though! They were doing an amazing job for being so short-handed. I ordered the«lean hamburger». First of all, no one wants a lean hamburger anymore! When I order a hamburger, I want a hamburger! It was good, served on a French baguette roll with mayo and grilled veggie. But I wanted it richer! Gimme some fat! The pesto pasta salad was very good too. Love that they have that option instead of just fries. Fun! I ordered malbec at the ale house. It was still pretty good! I’m not rushing to come back here… but it seems like a really cool, friendly neighborhood spot.

This is a food allergy customer service review. Great place so ignore if you are someone in your party is not allergic to certain types of food. I write this in hope that the staff becomes more aware. Yes, I am one of those annoying food allergy customers. Tried and true gut wrenching, diarrhea inducing, painful food reactions if I get the wrong stuff, not to mention a ton of other issues. I like coming here– they have and advertise a gluten free menu. Great so order a salad with no cheese(allergic) and obviously no croutons. Salad comes out loaded with cheese. Simple enough– I remind the waiter can’t have cheese. No problem. New salad comes out loaded with croutons. So I remind them again — no dairy, no gluten– I am allergic. This salad comes out– take a bite of blue cheese(which they scraped of the chicken, and a bite of part of a croton– followed by a rash up my arm. They did not charge me for the food. Warning to Celiacs or people with allergies stick to drinks only. The disclaimer, yes no kitchen can ever guarantee that they do not cross contaminate –totally fair! But scraping cheese off food and dumping the same greens on the plate with left over croutons on them is not cool, while having told the staff three times.

I am obsessed with the goat cheese salad at this place. Fresh mixed greens, tomato wedges, walnuts, and pan friend, breaded, warm goat cheese medallions with a light dressing. It is the perfect salad, and as such the only food I have ever ordered here. I’d recommend it on that merit alone, but the beer selection is great too and the prices are right. They’ve also got killer iced tea. One thing I really like about this place is that, compared to everything else in the area, it has a calm and casual atmosphere. With how crowded most of the other bars on Greenwood get I sometimes feel like I’m walking into a beehive, but the layout of 74th Street Alehouse means that even when it gets crowded it isn’t overwhelming.

Arguably the best Reuben that I’ve ever had. I like to order off of the Specials menu when something catches my eye, but I always have the Reuben to fall back on when all else fails. Seriously. I could eat that sandwich every day until I die(which would consequently be from heart failure in all likeliness). The beer is great too. Rotating taps keep it fresh, and no big-brand domestic crap. The service has always been pleasant. The only thing I wish for would be an under-21 seating area for when I have family in town with younger folks in tow. However, I suppose the age restriction does force a certain atmosphere where you never have to worry about a toddler making a mess at the table next to you.

My husband and I live nearby and have been coming to this pub for 20 years. We have searched the world over(and yes, even in NYC) for a better Rueben and have found none. We love this place for its atmosphere, good local beer selection and the great food. In fact, after living on the east coast for a couple years, we ate here every week for several months because we had missed it so much. I am giving the place 2 stars however because even after all this patronage, the staff(particularly those that have been there as long as we have been coming in) have never once acted like they even recognize us. My husband is very distinctive and people usually remember him. As well, we order the very same thing every time with the same beverages. I worked in restaurants for 10 years and I get it that this place is high volume and they see a lot of faces every day. They likely have regulars that come in multiple times a week. But after 20 years, come on. Can’t you even pretend to recognize us? And, did I mention that we tip 30%?

Ray: Last night we went to the 74th Street Ale House, located on, well, 74th Street. When we were finding parking(ample by the way), I was impressed with the appearance. There is a marquis type sign over the front door that made me feel like this was a happening place. Inside was no different. A nicely decorated and clean interior. I felt quite comfortable. We seated ourselves and were greeted fast. They had my favorite beer(Boundary Bay IPA) on tap. That was a plus. They were featuring German food on the menu, so I ordered the Jaeger Schnitzel. That’s where things started to turn… Ok — Let me say here that I am a foodie. I love to cook and I know how to build intricate flavors that complement one another. I believe that outstanding food can be powerful. It can inspire and even change lives. I believe that the first taste actually begins with the eyes. Then your nose comes into play. If done right, your senses tell how good the food is before you even take your first bite. The food I serve my family rivals just about any restaurant that we eat at. That being said, when our food arrived, the presentation was… well…boarding house. And the smell of the food seemed to be absent. When I tasted the mushroom gravy, I knew that the plate in front of me was a flavor black hole with everything good being crushed to oblivion by dark matter. I can sum it up with three words. Bland, bland and bland. I have two bits of advice for the chef — I mean cook. 1. Season your food! 2. Taste your food! Though the service and atmosphere was great, I am giving the 73rd Street Ale House two stars based on the food, which left so much to be desired. Josh: I don’t have a lot to add to this, the place was really good looking, clean and open. Nice inviting exterior. The service was very prompt, had menus as soon as we sat down, and just over 12 minutes between ordering and getting the food at the table. However, the food was just bland. I also had the jäger schnitzel, so much potential for deliciousness. I’m not a foodie, or even a capable home cook, but I’d think anything covered in gravy would be delicious. I mean, isn’t the gravy itself an easy out to keep something from being bland? The dish could suck up one side and down the other, but slap a little savory gravy on it(that sounds like a song lyric in the making) and it could turn out amazing. Not so for the 74th St. Ale House. Might go back for a beer, but perhaps not to eat. Two stars.

I really enjoyed the ambiance of this place. Went in on a Thursday afternoon for lunch to catch up with a friend and the street parking was limiting. Had to park deep in the residential neighborhood. Not a big problem but something to keep in mind when its raining. The pictures on the wall are all different pubs in London which was neat to see. The service was approachable and kept up with our requests. Really enjoyed their salmon goat cheese salad. My friend had their sub, which looked extremely filling. Definitely recommend this place if you’re in the greenwood neighborhood!

Yum, sandwiches! I’d been here a few times before, but for some reason never got around to trying the food. I asked my companion to order whatever(we were sharing), and I was little bummed she chose the Reuben. I don’t like Reubens, but I didn’t say anything beforehand, so it’s my fault. Good thing I didn’t, because this sandwich was freaking tasty! It was a red cabbage, rather than your typical mushy gross sauerkraut that’s been scooped out of some ubiquitous vat. This was clearly made in-house, if not there, then somewhere nearby. Bread and everything was perfectly done and toasted. Likey. The bartender was super nice and there was plenty of seating and other food selections, unlike nearby Prost. So if you’re at Prost and you get hungry after Das Boot, stumble down over here. I would wish that their beer selection was better. Maybe it’s having lived in Seattle for so long, but I’ve become a beer snob, and I can’t be content with *just* Mac ‘n Jacks anymore. MnJ’s is awesome, but let’s get some more local brews in here!
