A brick & mortar supporter, waves of guilt soar whenever I shop Amazon . I’m blaming my visit to Café Bolivar coupled with the impending Mercury retrograde for my waxing nostalgic, thus turning to Amazon to quell a surprisingly urgent need for connection to the past. After an internet search(including Unilocal), I learned the Detroit Gallery of Contemporary Crafts & Garden Café, where a signature spinach salad among other delish dishes were served up, bit the dust 20+ years ago but, in 1990, a cookbook was published to benefit the Coalition on Temporary Shelter(COTS ) and one copy was left. Sold! My «used» copy would be coming from an Amazon Marketplace bookseller, Tetractys. It arrived ahead of date promised, in what I would call, «never used» condition . Incredibly swift service! On my receipt was a handwritten«Thanks». Inside my foodie treasure, I found yet another treasure, a yellowed, newspaper clipping about the café’s fundraising efforts. Who put it there? No doubt, a kindred spirit… Café’s vegan, lentil soup is simmering on my stove right now… ah memories…
