I live in Ballard and had been wanting to try for a bit. The first time I went, I looked at the menu and noted $ 17 fish n’ chips and just couldn’t pull the trigger. A friend was there with a group this time and I joined. Cozy ambience and high end cocktails. I got the famous fish n’ chips and they were good, huge portion, enough to share. All in all, if I was on a budget, I wouldn’t go back. But very high quality as per Ethan Stowell standard!

This place has really good fish and chips! However, other foods are ok and most of the foods here are overpriced.

Without a doubt, the best calamari that I have ever had. We experienced amazing service from our bartender who gave us a quick rundown on all the local brewed beers. He gave us a couple of quick tips on other restaurants in the area and then suggested the calamari as an appetizer. Once we put in our order we could hear and smell our dish being prepared and it was amazing. Other patrons in the restaurant started inquiring about what we ordered. The food tasted better than it smelled. The calamari was breaded just right so that it it was light, fluffy with an exact balance of seasoning. Even the sauce that they provided had a great seasoning but you could eat this dish without the sauce. This was a nice, out of nowhere surprise to find on the way out of an already amazing meal… so I don’t see the reason for such a low rating and I only assume that it has to do with the fact that these guys haven’t been on TV yet.

Chippy’s set up a fixed price group menu(chef’s choice) for my work group. The food and service was amazing. We had a fabulous time and a nice assortment of fish. They were very accommodating to the two that didn’t eat fish and brought them a great steak dish(I tried it). The only weird thing about Chippy’s is that there is quite the trek to the bathroom. However, that is more of an oddity or quirk to be aware of than a complaint. All in all, I would highly recommend a trip to Chippy’s.

Used to be an easy neighborhood go-to, offering something slightly different than other restaurants in the neighborhood. We hadn’t been in awhile but were suprised at how the menu had shifted to higher end small to medium plates. The bartender said the shift was to help Chippy’s be more aligned with the other Ethan Stowell restaurants, but now it just feels as though it has lost it’s initial energy and perspective. It was nice to have a place to walk to that was a fun, slightly pricey but accessible meal on a weekend. Now it feels super overpriced and not dissimilar to other restaurants in the area that I would prefer to go to for that price point(Westward, Whale Wins, Walrus & Carpenter, Stoneburner etc.). Anyway super bummer on not having the avocado + dungeness crab dib :(

This restaurant was recommended to us from our AirBnB Host. I of course turned to Unilocal and read up the reviews and was super excited. My boyfriend and I came on a dark and rainy Saturday night. I had made reservations an hour beforehand and they told us there was going to be at least an hour wait, which was fine. We arrived just in time for our 9:15PM reservation and they let us know our table was not ready yet. We waited at the bar with a couple of beers which was very good. After about 5 – 10 minutes, we were seated. I was super excited for the crab avocado mix with chips I had saw on Unilocal earlier, but I was informed they had recently changed the menu and had taken it off. There were some other items that was taken off as well. I was majorly disappointed and still am!(It was the only reason why I chose this place!) My boyfriend picked the Shrimp Ceviche and I chose the Fish and Chips. Food: Man! Our waitress was not kidding the Shrimp Ceviche had a kick to it. I had eaten a piece of the pepper and my mouth was on fire! Other than that, that dish didn’t have much appeal and it was expensive! It was very mediocre and left little to be desired. It came with saltine crackers. not much more to say about that. The Fish and Chips was pretty good. The fish was light and fried perfectly. The fries were crisp and crunchy. Ambience: I loved the decorations and the intimate feeling it gave. It was dim and cozy. The restaurant is small but didn’t feel too cramp. Overall: I had a nice time and enjoyed my new experience. The beer was local and delicious. But I’m not sure if I would come back if I will be in the area. P. S. The bathroom was a journey to get to but very unique.

Admittedly, we visited here as we waited for a seat at the restaurant behind them. I feel bad even typing that, but it is the truth. The place wasn’t busy, except with others doing the same as we were. Sat at the bar and had the fried peppers. They were fun to eat, but really needed some salt in the coating. The mayo dip tasted like, well, mayo. Spice it up! ;) Didn’t drink any signature drinks, but their beer was cold and plentiful. Prices were typical of the area, and service was kinda meh, but I think that is because it was obvious we were waiting to go elsewhere.

Reservations recommend! These folks know what to do with a piece of fish. We dined on the tuna poke, the halibut fish & chips, and the fresh halibut. Our only concern was the halibut could have used a touch more S&P. Otherwise zero complaints! It started to rain while we were seated outside and the staff bent over backwards to get us a seat inside. The staff was wonderful!

Really wanted to like this place… The food was good, some misses but a few hits as well. Service was excellent– attentive and welcoming. First the good– fish and chip was great– clams as well. Tomato salad was fresh and delicious. Some stuff we didn’t like– the randomness of our meal, things came whenever– even though we coursed out our meal. Corn soup was not a hit– to sweet for us. Bread was good– but not worth the charging price. Octopus was also very good– that we killed fast. Root beer was way to artisanal for me… Do we really need to go that micro on Rootbeer!!! Overall good meal– but probably won’t be back for a while…

Been wanting to try this spot for a while because heck, who doesn’t love Fish and Chips… especially if chef Ethan Stowell is the master mind behind this one? My first impression… tiny! Nice size crowd, cute place to be when it’s pouring animals outside, nice swing windows to let some good air in… nice bar!.. cute décor.(I can pack a ton into my first impressions :)) We sat at this nice bar and the bartender was friendly yet dialed in to making his cocktails. I LOVE watching bartender’s with passion for their job. As with coffee, nobody should ever have to drink a bad latte or a bad cocktail in Seattle anymore, not acceptable! I had been imbibing a bit too much so I opted for a nice glass of Mark Ryan Rose. Winner. Full bar and they had great local beers on tap… think Stoup, Populuxe, Reubens.etc. Get this, I didn’t order the Fish and Chips. I know, right? We went with the fried oysters, the fig and walnut salad and the chilled corn soup. Fried oysters were tasty, not the best I’ve had(damn that La Conner restaurant for ruining me, epic fried oysters) but these left me wanting about 5 or 6 more, yummy. The fig dish was good, interesting but well executed. Mix of toasty walnuts, carmelized onions and perfectly prepared figs with just the right amount of salt.(I think I was bewildered that it tasted good too, hence the extra detail) The next dish was the surprise. the chilled corn soup that the bartender steered me towards. Really good folks. Pureed corn soup with delectable tidbits of bacon, tomatoes, corn kernels, herbs and a nice topping of swirly flavored oil all came together and created something that never in a million years would I have ordered BUT will next time, along with the Stowell Fish and Chips. I wanted to take just a half star away because I thought that the limited food menu was priced a tiny bit too high. Food is delicious and service was perfect. Thanks to the bartender for topping off my Rose… I’ve eaten a million places and no one has ever offered that kind gesture. Your momma raised you right. :)

This place I like! Small, busy little place that specializes in fried(and sometimes not) fish… who wouldn’t love this. I started out with their signature cocktail… Monkey Knife Fight and loved it. Now I’m not sure what it takes to make great calamari(idk– have you ever had GREAT calamari– or bad calamari) but let me tell you something, whatever they do to those crazy cephalopods I want more. Damn they were good… maybe it was the booze but I doubt it. I also had the cod and it was a generous portion and delicious. I can’t wait to try the rest of the menu… very soon I hope.

I visited Chippy’s around the time that they opened(4pm) for a late lunch. Boy, did that place fill up with customers fast! The menu is simple, which I always prefer to menus that are so expansive that nothing could really be a specialty. I sat at the bar and ordered a limeade($ 4). I was happy to see that it was hand-crafted right in front of me, and the bar tender took as much care making it was you’d normally see with an artisan cocktail. I also ordered the avocado crab dip($ 17). It was delicious, made with dungeoness crab and fresh avocados and served with a heaping pile of homemade potato chips. As delicious as it was, the chip to dip ratio was way off– I was disappointed that the yummy dish of succulent crab dip was only about the size of a bar of soap. Will definitely come back with friends to try more items on the menu!

This place lands food, atmosphere and service — it didn’t disappoint! Great location for a casual dinner. The menu is much more than ‘chips’. Definitely great for a seafood lover, but many non-seafood options as well. I had the best Crab Louis I have ever had! We also tried the Cod Hushpuppy special amazing! Cocktails and wine were awesome as well! Can’t wait to go back.

Chippy’s is a hidden gem in downtown Seattle. They have the bar on the right and fancy restaurant on the left– cool concept. We ate at the bar. The oyster shooters are fresh and delicious. We both ordered the Cod and Chips which came out fresh and hot. We asked for the sampling of sauce and spicy roumaloude was the best. Would given a 4 stars but one piece of fish for $ 14 wasn’t the best deal. But overall I cool place to chill and enjoy fish and chips.

I like Chippy’s. They have an awesome HH which includes their fish n chips(4oz vs regular dinner sized 6oz), sandwiches, beers, and apps. The cod is a favorite here, it’s perfectly fried, flaky, and flavorful. You can also choose for a number of different sauces or just ask to try them all. The fries are good, but I actually prefer their house made potato chips that come w/the sandwiches or the dips. Seating is limited so go earlier, or expect a wait.

come here for HH! amazing prices! this place is small so don’t come with a large group. we sat up at the bar. btw– the playlist for this resto was AMAZING. what genius came up with it? in between bites of fish and fries, we just wanted to DANCE and spit rhymes. okay what to get: — obviously, fish n chips(get the true cod). HH gives you 4 oz cod(vs 6 oz if you get it off the dinner menu). but it was plenty enough fish for me and it was BOMB. crispy and perfectly fried(not an ounce of excess grease) and the fish was flaky and moist. the fries are among some of the top fries i’ve had. thick, hearty, and a-plenty. — smoked clam & bacon dip: never had anything like this and now asking myself why it’s taken me 20some years to have this. i want this at every single future party i will ever attend. full-bodied smokey flavor, plenty of clams swimming in there. this came with lotsa potato chips for dipping. more, more, more. okay, now the sad part — what NOT to get: — oregon bay shrimp cocktail. we ordered this off the HH menu and it came with saltine crackers. weird. didn’t like that, so just ate the shrimp by itself. it was fine, but nothing to write home about. — hush puppies — OH i was soo sad about this one. i love hush puppies and i’ve never really had a bad hush puppy(they’re called hush puppies for goodness sake– how can something with the word ‘puppy’ be bad), but this was bad. way too salty and didn’t taste a lick of fish that was supposed to be in there. it came with dipping sauces, which also did nothing for the hush puppies(i already forgot what they were). these should be called… shush puppies. there, i said it. bottom line: a fun place to come and eat. would definitely come for HH again when i get a hankering for fish n chips!

Living in the Seattle area, almost every food establishment has some kind of fish and chip option, which most are just run of the mill and average. Not so with Chippy’s! Amazing fish and chip spot. Its located at the end of Ballard Ave, near The Walrus and the Carpenter. Its not a very large restaurant, so anything more than a group of six, won’t really fit. There is a large bar, which has an extensive selection of whiskeys and spirits. They also have eight different micro beers on draft, which is always a bonus. I don’t care to see Bud Light on tap… They also offer oyster shooters with a few flavor options, besides the usual cocktail sauce. So unique and the oysters were shucked fresh. I ordered the fried oysters and chips, in which the oysters were cooked perfectly. Cooked about medium and the batter was crunchy and not greasy. My husband ordered the tuna melt, which came with regular potato chips. The sandwich was hot and tuna was cooked perfectly. Loved the idea of an upscale tuna melt, that actually delivered with amazing flavor! The only downside with Chippy’s is that it isn’t open for lunch and it can’t accommodate large groups. Great place to go for comfort food and drinks.

Well, leave it to me to order a sandwich at a fish n’ chip place. It wasn’t just any old fish n’ chip place, though, and it certainly wasn’t your run of the mill sandwich either! Chippy’s has a fine selection of sandwiches. There was one sandwich, though, that interested me more than the others — The Dungeness Crab Roll. First off, let’s get this out of the way: Dungeness crab is the best crab, period! That’s not just regional pride speaking, but a scientific fact. So, the fact that Dungeness crab was used in this sandwich was a definite plus for me. They’re not stingy with the crab either. The aspect of this sandwich that stood out the most was its simplicity. This sandwich basically has only five ingredients plus a modest amount of seasoning. Everything is orchestrated to either complement or accentuate the sweet, irresistible flavor of the Dungeness. It all starts on a light and airy baguette roll that is split in half lengthwise. On one half of the roll the crab, lightly dressed with a subtle lemon aioli is nestled on a couple of green lettuce leaves. The alternate side supports a mosaic of creamy, green and perfectly ripened avocado slices resting on top of red tomato slices. The avocados also get a light sprinkling of sea salt. The whole sandwich works very nicely. It holds together very well, too. I basically held it in my right hand while I ate it and drank beer using my left hand. Nothing shifted or fell onto my lap. I know that this seems to be a small consideration, but I’ve sampled some poorly constructed sandwiches that were difficult to eat and it really does take away from the overall experience. This sandwich was delicious as well. As I wrote above, it’s all about the crab on this sandwich. Nothing overshadowed or overwhelmed it. The avocado and tomato worked well with the sweet crab meat and there were notes lemon and sea salt faintly in the background. It’s a classy sandwich and it’s very nice. Chippy’s being an Ethan Stowell place and all, I guess that I should say something about the price. If you’re unfamiliar with Mr. Stowell’s establishments, well then, you may suffer from some sticker shock. The fried seafood options range in price from $ 14 to $ 18 and that’s not out of line for any place using fresh seafood. The Dungeness Crab Roll, however, is an expensive sandwich and comes in at $ 19. I’m only going to start quibbling about price when I don’t like a sandwich and then it won’t matter if I’ve spent $ 6 or $ 20. Once again, this is a great sandwich and I’ve got no complaints at all!

In my never ending quest to find amazingly awesome fish and chips in Seattle, I decided to stop by here with a friend. That was a wise decision. First things first — this restaurant is not open for lunch, only dinner.(That’s why I hadn’t tried it before, to be honest.) The location in Ballard is pretty awesome — not on the Ballard main strip, so you don’t have to struggle with crowds, but still part of the area’s unique character. I had the classic cod and chips. The fish was cooked to perfection — crispy without being greasy, and served with fries that were perfectly prepared. The service was phenomenal — our server took care of us, was upbeat, and ridiculously friendly. She was attentive and she knew what she was doing. Only drawback here is the price. Yes, it’s by a signature chef, but it’s definitely a premium price. But at the same time, it’s not so horrible that you’ll gasp in horror — and you get some good food in return.
