Frank Lumber the Door Store

No fuss no muss, browse all you want, helpful sales staff by phone and in person. I’ve gotten bifold door slabs custom sized, and all-​wood screen door slabs stock size though they would have done custom size for a price. Quality of materials is fine, panel sizes were spot on for both stock and custom, time to cut the custom panels was just a couple days. Pickup in-​store is great — they’ll send out 2 helpers and the salesman to help you ensure you’ve got a good load-​out. Maybe it helps that I’m a former contractor and major DIY remodeler, but it’s always been fun for me to deal with Frank Lumber.

Not happy with the interior door quality. They did not take stain evenly, and we had to completely remove and start all over. They said — «painter’s fault». Painter said — «it’s the way it’s been done for forty years — they should have warned us if things had changed». Result: homeowner not happy with either Frank Lumber or painter. What a pain. Go somewhere else, where they stand by the product they sell.

If you want or need a custom door, this is the place to go. They can make exactly what you need or whatever you can dream up. Slab, bi-​fold, French, with or without jamb, wood or fiberglass — they can do it.
Lots of really knowledgeable staff that are there to help you make the right choice and will not try to upscale you crap you don’t need.
They have deliver anywhere in seattle and I have never seen the staff be pushy or elitist to none builders. You will be fine as a homeowner walking in and asking for help.

I recently purchased a pivot door from this store. The beautiful door was delivered to my home in Olympia with the wrong glass installed, due to circumstances I inadvertently caused. They were incredible in fixing the problem I had caused. Not only were they wonderful to work with during the design and purchase process — their customer service in fixing the problem was just as terrific. Fantastic experience!

Excellent quality, great service. I have been slowly replacing the beaten up 60-​year-​old hollow core doors in my house with solid core doors that match perfectly using their «match up» service.
The other day, I showed up just after closing time and they helped me out anyway, so I didn’t have to make the (long) drive a second time.

This store was recommended by a family friend. When I picked up my «matched» doors the measurements for the hinges were off on my doors. So I’ve had to take the door back to the shop to have them correct THEIR mistake, but they acted like they were doing me a favor by correcting THEIR mistake. Fast forward to tonight and the door still doesn’t fit after their «corrections». They don’t call you when your product is «finished», so you’re responsible for calling them to make sure your order is done. I honestly would not recommend this business to anyone else. They had 20+ employees working which gives you the false hope that they know what they’re doing, but you’re better off looking up the steps on YouTube and doing it all yourself. ⁰⁄₁₀ would never go back.

I recently purchased two doors from this store, and the experience was great. The lumber store has a lot of references for installers to help you with your projects. I was initally a little frustrated with considering the project, but it went very very well.
The gentleman at the counter refered Monty for the work, and him and his team members did an amazing job. I would easily go to this lumber store and hire MONTY to do my work again.

What a great selection of doors! — What a great line of BS those salespeople can sling!
These guys are slick. My sales guy «John», at their Marysville store, was the best. I am pretty seasoned and yet I fell for his lines, guarantees, etc. We had so many problems with a dutch door they made for me, costing me and additional $ 300 to «tweak» it upon installation… and it was custom made just for me! John «was going to reimburse me for those extra $ 300 in costs», and a year later I have yet to see a check. The hinges were in the wrong places, and the middle cut between the top and bottom doors was crooked! They have excellent door making equipment, but the guys running the machines were not on their game, at least the day they did our Dutch Door. A VERY EXPENSIVE Dutch Door, BTW.
We also ordered an exterior French Door — MADE IN THE USE, ‘the best on the market we were told — made in Tacoma, best for for ocean side weather’, stay away from the Chinese doors, etc, etc, etc… They sent me a Chinese door set…
WEEKS & weeks later they delivered the USA doors, only to find that they put the special glass we ordered in backwards… That happend twice. The delays were horrendous. At first John told me they don’t deliver to our area, so I even had to pay a guy to go down to Marysville and get them for me… when in fact — Frank’s delivers everywhere for no charge…
Finally they got the French Doors correct. I then spent $ 400 having the doors sanded, prepped and lacquered professionally. Less than a year later the exterior veneer on the doors is peeling off these «top of the line» doors. These doors were $ 1500 + finishing and hardware. «John» was going to send me new doors… that conversation took place in May of 2015. It’s now August 2015 and John has yet to make good on their guarantee.
These people look like & sound like they know doors, and they have a lot of inventory but frankly, they are just slick sales people. (You can not believe how they made our Dutch Doors. What a mess. And they are the professionals!) We have not yet had a check cut to us, like John promised, for the mess we had to correct on the Dutch Doors.
Oh, BTW… John told me he’d replace the French Doors, but the $ 400 in finishing was my problem. Why should I have to pay once again for finishing any new doors they might bring to me — had his «top of the line doors» not failed? I’ve got $ 2200 in these doors and for $ 2400 I could have bought Anderson’s top of the line Storm Watch doors, with a finish on them that never fails from a company that has integrity built into their guarantee — but I wanted to keep the money in the local economy.
Had Frank’s Lumber made good on their warranty, and given me my promised refund for the Dutch Door and made good on the French Door I would have never written this review.
Now you know what I know…

I had an odd sized bathroom door to replace and I live in west Seattle. First I tried the local Home Depot, they said they could get it «in a couple of weeks». Then I went to a door expert in SODO, they said they could get it in a week. Then I went to Franks, he got me my door in one hour at a great price.

Pretty damn awesome, but a little confusing. The deal is that if you need a door, you have to try here.
Yes, there’s other places that sell doors but unless you just need the most basic of interior hollow core door in a standard size, this place is your JAM.
My house is over 100 years old, it’s a bit lopsided and the doorways are all wonky so anytime I need a door– and as a homeowner, that’s more often than you’d think– I know I’ll be out at Frank Lumber.
I find that you can easily peruse the stock and the people are helpful but the whole process can be a bit confusing so make sure you ask a MILLION questions if you aren’t sure, and especially note the instructions for picking up said door.

Great selection and great resources, but the customer service skills, order tracking and attention to details fall somewhere at the bottom of the scale.
Over the course of 3 home remodels that involved replacing all of the doors, this spanning several decades plus, I’ve had my measure of disappointments and frustration with Frank Lumber and Door. I have not found them to be particularly helpful. In fact, quite the opposite. If they were dealing exclusively with people that install doors as a career it wouldn’t be a problem perhaps, but my experience is that they’re communication skills are poor, they make assumptions when they should ask questions, fail to follow directions, are arrogant and treat the average customer like they’re idiots to be talked down to. What is the alternative? Please somebody! I’d gladly go somewhere else.
Most recently… I ordered the first 3 of 20+ pre-​hung doors to replace the old doors/​frames in our new house. Oak doors and frames. Told the sales rep to order the doors but hold off on hanging them until I make a decision on the specific hardware hinges and lock sets and their finish/​color. I made that decision, bought all the hardware and went by Frank Lumber today to drop off the hardware. Ends up they had already hung the doors with their own hinges of a different shape than what I had purchased, they routed the frame on the strike plate side for the shape of THEIR strike plate NOT for the hardware I had purchased and had routed the door for a round latch plate rather than my square. latch plate. Further, even though I had told them to wait for my hardware so that the door could be finished to fit the hardware I chose, I was informed that the round latch plate style is the only way they do it. If I want square I have to do that myself.
Well… I don’t want to chisel out the corners so the latch plate fits correctly. That’s why I came to them. They’re the door store. I want it done right by the «door experts»… but, evidently that’s not the sort of custom work they do???
We sorted all of that out. One of the doors had to be reordered. I never saw it, but was told that it wasn’t the right size.
After all of this, when I came to pick up the doors they couldn’t find the one that had been reordered. It was about an hour of looking before they found it, and it hadn’t been hung yet so they did that while I waited.
They appear to work solely off of paper. They appear to have a hard time tracking things, like customer notes, product location, item status, etc. Perhaps a computerized system would help?
I’ve had my fill of Frank.

I had purchased here before and had a good experience. I went yesterday and the guy who helped me went out of his way to be obnoxious and argumentative. Treated me like I was an idiot. They have the door market for Seattle. But they could at least hire people who try to be nice.

I know they have a wonderful reputation and any door you could ever want is there or certainly available. My beef is after being quoted a price and putting ½ down over the phone, going in to pick up the door being informed of yet another $ 55 that the salesmen never bothered to mention or put on the written estimate. Yes, calling it an «estimate“‘ gave them an out. But you go in expecting one price and getting it jacked up is distasteful. Even when the counter worker addressed my complaint with the floor manger, he didn’t even have the guts to get out of his chair and come over to me (let alone make eye contact with me during their exchange) to explain the add on charge… leaving her to fend for herself. basic goodwill, business 101 and assurance of return customers would have been to waive the $ 55.00, admit an error and enjoy a good reputation and more business. Now, I hope this review, plus my never returning for future projects, and steering recommendations clear of them will have cost them much more than the measly $ 55 they felt such a need to protect.

Horrible Experience. $ 13,000 dollar order for two houses. Another reviewer nailed it on the head. You deal with one sales person. Everything is drawn out and handwritten. Nothing computerized making it easy to follow and communicate. I have the drawings from sales person on what we ordered. Apparently, one of the sets of doors we ordered, a french door, Codel with blinds, was not available in the size of one of our doors that we ordered. So the salesman changed the order to match the front doors of the house. So now we have doors in our great room that look identical to our front doors that have privacy glass. Why would you put privacy glass on french doors off a balcony that are sandwiched between two sets of nine foot windows? Sales person insists we talked about it… we didn’t talk about it I would not put privacy glass on a balcony door off of a great room that already has huge picture windows.
If you have to get your doors from this store, get a signed copy on what you are agreeing to order and review every little drawing they send you, there may be a change from one to another. If you don’t get something signed you might just end up with a surprise of a set of doors that make no sense aesthetically to the flow or your home. I now have $ 2000 worth of doors I didn’t order. Thanks a lot Lyle, awesome job. So incredibly disappointed in this transaction, and the sales person saying he is «so sorry». Just drove out to review the transaction again with manager Duane. There is an email showing the correct doors, next email shows the invoice with our deposit, and on the 4^th page of that attachment is another drawing that shows the change… I was suppose to catch this change on the order. There was no indication on the email that any changes had been made. Duane says you gave us a $ 4000 deposit so that means it was all correct. Duane says, «Lyle says he did not make a mistake.» So there you go Lyle doesn’t make mistakes, awesome to know I just met a perfect person. They tell me they are happy to ship the doors back to manufacturer and charge us $ 700+ to have clear glass put in the doors. I asked if that was their cost… nope their cost is $ 600.

Excellent customer service! On our first time in a couple months ago we had a knowledgeable staff member (Thanks Bill!) discuss our needs and find the door we wanted. A little over a month later our ‘one lite’ door’s seal broke and became misty. There was no problem exchanging it for a new one (we did have our original receipt and a photo). They even routed the new door and let us hang on to the old one while we painted the new one. Great selection and reasonable pricing.

I bought doors from Franks years ago and had a great experience, I was able to get doors the same day. This time they don’t have basic doors in stock close and they were already booked for the day for the match up service (I got there as the store was opening). Leasons learned for me, call ahead, don’t expect to get something quickly, if thats what you want go to Lowes or Home Depot.

I can’t thank Frank’s Door Store enough for their quality service and products. My sidelites were leaking next to my front door and needed to be replaced quickly. I went in with my measurements and got exactly what I had been looking for to replace my door and sidelites. What’s even better was that it was delivered within just a couple weeks! The delivery guy, Jarred, went above and beyond to ensure our order was placed in a safe spot and even wrapped it up to protect it from the elements while we waited for it to be installed.

I am doing a remodel project so I found myself in the door store. Never knew there were so many types available. Fortunately the staff is very, very knowledgeable and willing to help even a total ignoramus. They were crowded on the day I was there so I think they need more staff but I would definitely go there again if I do another remodel which I hope I never will.

It can be intimidating to walk into Frank Lumber, The Door Store for the first time. The store has an almost frenetic energy level as the team of sales consultants works with contractors and homeowners discussing designs, taking orders and shopping for accessories.
It was really only on our third visit that we felt like we had a clear idea what we were even doing. I call this the three levels of Frank Lumber consciousness.
Level 1 — Overload
Where do you even begin? Frank Lumber, The Door Store features an almost infinite number of door options that can be custom built, but even in the store there’s got to be thousands of ready made doors, just waiting to be taken to a new home. The team that works there is really terrific, but it’s hard not to feel like an idiot within the context of all those options. Our first conversation with an associate went something like this:
Frank Lumber Associate: «What do you have in mind?»
Us: «Uuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh…»
Fortunately they are happy to spend time with you, even across multiple visits, talking about options, providing consultations on style and guidance on all the things you might not even know to ask. Pro tip: Take a picture of your existing door so they have an idea of what aesthetically you are starting with, and then take lots of pictures while you are in the store.
Level 2 — Understanding
After your level 1 visit to Frank Lumber you will enter your house with an entirely new understanding of the ill-​conceived home improvement project you have inexplicably decided to take on. Not only do you have to make a live-​with-​it-​for-​the-​rest-​of-​your-​life decision about the door style, glass trim, stain color and hardware, but you also have to find a contractor to do all the demolition and installation. You see, Frank Lumber only sells doors, they don’t install them. As a helpful gesture to its clueless customers (us), they do provide a sheet with recommended installers. I found the contractor I used, McCashen Construction (see my review:
) by cross referencing that list with reviews on Unilocal.
This small detail is the only reason that this is a 4-​star review instead of a 5-​star review. I would have much preferred to have had Frank Lumber do all of my work for me.
Most of level two may not even take place within the confines of the store. Interviewing contractors, reviewing bids, agonizing over all the decisions to be made, can all be managed from within the comfortable confines of your house — a big glass of wine in hand. Pro tip: You might as well start drinking now.
Ultimately though there will be another visit to Frank Lumber. This is when you’ll meet with your associate, review the measurements sent over by the contractor, finalize all the variables and then walk away angst-​ridden waiting to hear back on the cost.
Level 3 — Resignation
Listen, if you want a crappy door, The Home Depot and Lowes are just a few miles to the west. But if you want something that is going to enhance your home, last for decades and give you a sense of pride, you’re going to pay for it. Dearly. Pro tip: Community college is a fine option for your kids.
But it’s all worth it when your door is finally delivered. The craftsmanship is undeniable. Frank Lumber is the best in Seattle. That’s why they’ve been around for over 60 years and serve a clientele up and down the left coast and as far away as Asia. You can’t go wrong and you’re going to love it when the compliments start coming in. Who knew your neighbors hated your old door so passionately?
Early on we spoke with a number of different associates at Frank Lumber and appreciated their patience as they worked to educate us on everything we didn’t know. Some associates are clearly more comfortable working with contractors than homeowners, but never did we speak with one who was rude or disinterested in helping us. Ultimately we ended up dealing with Bill Henke and he was just terrific. Helpful, knowledgeable and personable. We really enjoyed working with him.
