Pole dancing: not just for strippers. I’ve seen numerous deals for these kind of classes and always been skeptical, but decided to try out the one month beginner class when it popped up on Groupon. I’m so glad I did. It’s REALLY fun(you haven’t twirled this much since kindergarten), a great workout, and not remotely sketchy. The instructor, Robert, may be the most unlikely pole dancing instructor ever, but he’s awesome– helpful, chill, funny, and again, not remotely sketchy. For a unique and fun work-out, I’d highly recommend FMZ.

Before I took the Intro to Pole Dance class at FMZ I thought pole dancing was just for strippers, and therefore not for me. I was so wrong! This is NOT an erotic dance class, this is the kind of dance you see in a cirque. Pole dance is an athletic and acrobatic dance form that challenged me in ways I couldn’t have imagined. It’s so much fun to spin around the pole, I feel more graceful than I thought I could. Robert, the instructor, makes his students feel comfortable and capable of doing the moves. And the moves are really fun! Oh, and the workout! I’ve developed much more upper body strength. Between the floor exercises at the beginning, the pole dancing and the occasional rope work(yes, like in gym class when we were kids!) my arms, shoulders and back are MUCH stronger than they’ve been since I was kid. More about Robert. It’s clear right from the start that he’s incredibly passionate about what he does. He’s an accomplished pole dancer and really nice person. I was nervous going into my first class but Robert immediately set me at ease.

I took a 2 month series here a few years ago. It was really, really fun! The instructor is the most unlikely pole dancing teacher you may ever find, but that added to the experience. The class itself was a great workout that focused on the artistry and athleticism of pole dancing. It was never sketchy or sleezy as one might imagine pole dancing could be. And from what I understand, this is the only studio in town that offers both stationary and free spinning poles. If you’re looking for an unusual workout, take this one for a spin.
