Great mom and pop shop. The prices for nigiri and sashimi are cheaper when compared to other sushi places in the area. The service is great and the pieces of fish were large. We will be coming back for sure.

Not the best place for sushi since there’s Maneki right there in the ID but it’s good as an alternative. The best thing they have on the menu is their Japanese curry udon soup. It is THEGREATESTTHING next to Korean food on a rainy day! You can taste the curry in the broth and the noodles are delicious and fresh. Go there for that reason and maybe get a stereotypical sushi hand roll to supplement the soup. SOGOOD.

I won’t be back, I work near by and walk by it all the time and finally decided to give it a try. I had ordered their tempura udon, it took a long time to get our food. When you only have an hour for lunch waiting a long time for food is not cool especially when there is only one other table.

Gee, if you want mini-sushi, it is the best place to go. The portion was the smallest I ever had in any sushi restaurant. I’ve ordered one roll and one basis spicy sushi. It literally would fit in half palm of my hand. Taste was ok. But after spending 18 dollars I was hungrier than I entered this place. The WORST ever. Disappointed.

This is the first Cantonese-operated sushi restaurant I’ve ever seen or tried, it was average. I appreciated the late open hours to get my sushi-fix, and the friendly waitress. I may consider this more of a lunch option if I’m driving through town, although there are many more Sushi joints on my hit-list in a .5 mile vicinity first. I had the J dinner-combo for $ 18 which was a bento with hamachi sashimi(somewhat stiff and maybe pre-frozen), tasty gyoza, and a spicy tuna roll with nori too soft and chewy for my taste.

Went here for lunch and entered a dingy place with only two customers that were leaving. The service was okay and sushi was not very fresh. It is also way overpriced for the lack of quality. I would have given two stars, but pretty sure I got food poisoning and am still suffering days later.

This is the best sushi I’ve had in ages. I can’t believe there’s no one here. The service is great. Great atmosphere, amazing food. I cannot praise enough. Go here immediately.

I LOVE this place! The food is always perfect. The chef convinced me to try scallop, and now it is my very favorite, but only from here! Every single thing I have had is so delicious!

Fresh, friendly, fast and quite cheap(well, for sushi). I never understand why this place is empty-ish at lunch but I love it. Delish.

I like the ambiance. Very good bento box. I ordered with nigiri sushi and chicken teriyaki. The salad came with a miso dressing which was nice. The only problem that I had was the nigiri sushi was salmon, tuna, and super white. I don’t think super white(escolar or shiro maguro) should be served as sushi or sashimi. It has been banned in some countries. Maybe next time I will ask what pieces are coming with the nigiri sushi that day, or I might just order something else. You get two choices from a list for the bento lunch. The bento price was $ 8 and I think that was a fair price. It was my first time there so this place may require a couple more trips from me to make a better assessment. The real authentic Japanese restaurants are on the other side of Jackson. But they usually cost a couple bucks more.

I will say that the sushi wasnt bad(but not really all that good) Despite coming into a nearly empty restaurant, the service was surprisingly slow. Food was a bit odd. It wasnt hard to tell that the sushi wasnt very authentic. I will say that the fish tasted decently fresh but given other sushi places in the area, this would not be high on my list. Service was very nice.

When people think about Chinatown sushi, they think of Maneki and Tsukushinbo as the shi shi in sushi. Don’t get me wrong, they are both really good, but add in the wait and the pseudo service when they are über crowded, they become so so sushi. Why not try a little gem of a place called J Sushi. Although they do not have an extensive list, they have great service. The waitress educated us about the different types of sushi and what makes others better depending on where they get it. That in itself is pretty cool. I love sushi and I know what is good sushi and bad sushi taste like, but the attentiveness and service made it that much better. So J is for a Jewel of a sushi place in Chinatown.

Ok. Décor was cool, especially the painting on the wall! Service is decent. The lady was nice enough(she’s probably Chinese, tho) and refill my water/tea often. She also did come to me and asked how am i doing once in awhile. Thumb up for that. Which means, even with these plus still couldn’t adjust my terrible experience with the food. Don’t let the look fool you, they look amazing, but taste terrible. Ordered Tamago and Salmon Nigiri. Paradise roll. Lunch special Chicken Don. Tamago: $ 1.75/piece. Salty and taste like soy sauce, «no egg taste». Salmon: $ 2/piece. Not fishy, or I should say there’s basically no taste. The rice didn’t even have vinegar in it. Paradise Roll: $ 10.95 for 5 small pieces(about half an inch). Expensive for its size. Yet, same thing — absolute no taste at all. Chicken Don: Chicken katsu — the«katsu» part is okay, but the«chicken» part is bad. The«Don» part is just speechless. It’s dry(where is the Don sauce?), rice is tasteless. The only part that worth saying is it’s a good size for $ 6.95. Soy Sauce: It tastes like Chinese soy sauce rather than a Japanese one — which is terrible to pair with sushi. Washabi: It’s washabi? Then why there’s no taste? Miso Soup: At least the miso soup taste like miso soup. Thank god. With that said, I will not come back and would not recommend ANYONE. Even if you are bringing a friend who had never tried sushi, just don’t — cos’ it doesn’t give a good impression of sushi. I normally don’t leave reviews. I only check in-to places for my own records so that I know where I ate and how was the food, but this one, I can’t stop myself from leaving my review.

I’m used to sushi from Genki or Sushiland and I tend to judge harder on higher — end places due to prices, atmosphere and so on, but this place actually impressed. They service was great and quick. Our server also didn’t mind explaining to me the different dishes. We order the Dragon and california roll and tempura udon, our favorites! The food was amazing! Literally mouth watering! I will always consider this place when I’m in Chinatown!

Best spicy tuna rolls I’ve EVER had!!! We found this place by chance after not making it in to a nearby concert. So happy we did! Just a little hole in the wall, but very friendly staff & fresh ingredients! Their spicy tuna rolls were reasonably priced &, in fact, SPICY!!!

Cozy little Sushi Restaurant. I have only checked this location out for Lunch. Yet both times were Very Quick Service with Great Quality Sushi. The place is clean and kept decent. Honestly, it is tough to decide on a 4 or 5 Star for this location. Just something isn’t putting me over the edge to a perfect score. If you have yet to try J Sushi, then it is worth the visit!

My dining experience wasn’t typical. I’d come here with a group for a going away party which had a chef’s choice extravaganza. Thus I shall rate the extravaganza’s offering, and the service with it. So I’m mostly an east side sushi guy. This may(and should) modify your opinion of my expectations. There are very few places on the east side with decent fish. I only have a couple places on the east side that seem worth it. So our extravaganza included such tasty morsels such as: sake(salmon) amaebi(raw shrimp) uni(sea urchin) butter fish scallop some rolls of which I didn’t know the nome of and others. a sort of dessert sushi, which was a hand roll with rice paper, and inside, unagi, cucumber and tamago. The highlights were certainly the uni, and dessert, but all were magnificent. The fish was as close to perfection as I’d ever had. I’ll admit that I’ve had uni once about 6 years ago, and I swear I’d never have it again. It was the most foul thing I’d ever put in my mouth. This is coming from someone who’s had hákarl(fermented Icelandic shark). Well J knows how to serve. He had a plate with one for the whole party. 7 piece of uni in nigiri style. I gave it another chance and I can say I’ve had good uni. It feels like a curse has been lifted. The amaebi had an interesting twist. A quail egg on top. Now I don’t believe I’ve had raw quail egg on anything, but it really did the amaebi a service is taming some of the bitterness that can come with it with the egg yolk. Nicely played. Also the scallop which normally is a pretty bland and or dry piece of sushi at many places. Jay does it nigiri style with a clear sort of sauce on top that really brings out the flavor of the scallop. I’d heard of this from said friend going away. To experience it was living up to the promise of what a nigiri scallop could offer. J himself came out and made sure we were all doing well, and struck up some conversation. I always admire a personable sushi chef who’s willing to talk and listen. All in all I have to give J’s five stars. The meal he put on was one I’ll remember forever. He’s so very passionate about good service and good food. 5 stars all the way.
