Laird Plastics

I haven’t «rated» a business in years because I have lost faith in «yelp» but decided it wouldn’t hurt to let people know that this place is a gem. I was looking for a hard product to find and was happily guided to the door of Laird by Scott. He made my sale easy and seemed genuinely concerned about my project. What more can you ask for?

First submitted for price through on line form. Received automated response «they would get back to me»…never did. I called anyway, asked if Seattle had what I needed in stock. Was told yes they did. Arrived, no they didn’t. Settled on a marginal alternative, requested a cut. Simply a straight edge, a razor blade, and 10 seconds. Quoted $ 20.00, informed of no cut, no sale 20.00 waived. Asked if they could /​would have what I needed in stock during my next Seattle visit. My lucky day, for twice the price of competitor they might. As long as, several planets align and the moon is made of cheese. Otherwise price will certainly be climbing. Also need to place deposit, interestingly enough, equivalent to purchase price for competitor. Obviously with this business model we, the taxpayers, will soon be giving them a bailout in order to save or create some jobs.

The price did seem steep compared to Tap Plastics for my application, I was just looking for scrap. Tap quoted me about $ 1.25 a pound and Laird’s price was $ 7.50 per remnant. The pieces I was looking at were 2 lbs, tops, so you do the math.
Aside from those small potatoes, the guy at Laird was super helpful in identifying the right material, steered me toward something that’s less likely to break under stress and won’t chip out when I drill it. When I didn’t have cash to pay for it (credit cards were a $ 25 minimum) he just said «You know what, come back and drop off $ 7.50».
That how you do it, so they get 4 stars (1 Star off for pricing being pretty high).

I stopped here to get some cutting board tops for a prep table. It had been recommended to me as being better and lower priced than Tap Plastics.
The first minus is they close at 4:30 and I got there about 4:35 but they waved me around to a side door. They told me there was at least a day wait and they couldn’t drill the 2 required holes in my top — minus two more stars.
They gladly gave me a quote. Much to my surprise, it was nearly double the price I had been quoted at Tap Plastics where I got a slightly narrower version before I modified the prep table it was destined for.
I will go to Tap Plastics to get my cutting board made to my specs, with holes — they have no problem of preparing it while you wait, including, drilling holes and for half the price of Laird! Needless to say, I will not be returning here.
