Has become like a second home. Marcelo is one of the best bjj teachers in the world and it has been an honor to train in his academy for the passed two years. The Academy is open nearly every day and open twice a day on certain weekdays. There is a diverse curriculum which includes Judo with Clint and boxing with Jimmy. If you are looking to find a great community and learn a priceless skill come in and train.

Visted this gym from out of town, first of all its a legit gym with legit blackbelts. My experience was not so great, went in to do a class, paid $ 20, other places were less than this as a mat fee, or even free. In the end wasn’t allowed to roll. Talked to some guys there who were surprised that I paid a mat fee, and didn’t get to roll. If you’re visiting think twice

I joined Marcelo’s shortly after moving to Seattle from Pittsburgh. It was my home away from home. I learned a vast amount in my time there and made close friendships as well. Everyone was always respectful, friendly, and helpful. Marcelo’s was my favorite thing about Seattle, if I could have taken anything from Seattle with me when I moved it would have been this.

Marcelo is a world class instructor. He has brought BJJ to the PNW and we are lucky enough to have him in this city. His classes are geared and tailored to meet everyone’s needs. Classes can vary between competitive BJJ, MMA, self defense or fitness. He really is one of the best instructors and if you are interested in martial arts this is your place to train.

I’ve been training under Professor Marcelo Alonso for about six years and feel so fortunate to be in such an amazing environment of learning. He is truly a jedi master in the art/​sport of brazilian jiu jitsu; his knowledge and attention to technical details are astonishing. His vast experience (over 30 years) make him a pillar of the BJJ/​MMA community in the Pacific Northwest.
And in the lineage of many great Carlson Gracie BJJ black belts, Professor Marcelo is an exceptional teacher. His ability to understand people’s motivations, personalities, and learning abilities enable him to relay his grappling knowledge to everyone, whether you are an MMA fighter, BJJ competitor, working class person, or even a young kid. His sense of humor and love of the art makes it easy to have fun and learn the techniques.

Above all this, there is one MOST IMPORTANT factor that you should base your decision on where to train — and that’s a well documented history of your instructor’s lineage.
If you study the history of BJJ, there are 4 major branches that come from Brazil. Marcelo received his black belt under The Carlson Gracie Team branch, and was given his black belt by Master Carlson Gracie himself:
If you train under Marcelo, your jiu jitsu lineage has only 4 degrees of separation from Mitsuyo Maeda — the man who taught jiu jitsu to the Gracie family. This means that your training under Marcelo is not watered down. It is solid, well documented, and well respected.
Having a well respected lineage is BJJ is the utmost importance. This means that your earned belt rank will have respect at any BJJ academy you step in. If you start training at Marcelo’s and unexpectedly move because of work or school — other academies will respect your rank because the respect Marcelo has, and the respect Carlson Gracie Team has. This cannot be said about every Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Seattle.
