Seattle Tilth

This past growing season I bought a half share in the Seattle Tilth CSA. I’ve gotten CSA boxes through several other farms before (both in Seattle and Wisconsin) and the Seattle Tilth CSA really delivered. Each week the produce was diverse, fresh, and delicious. Items were well selected and I had very little produce go to waste. The half share was a good amount for my wife and I. I also really liked the add-​on options; we were out of town one week, and were able to get credit, we used our credit to select goat cheese and honey from the add-​on options. That goat cheese was truly incredible!
I’ve also got to commend Seattle Tilth for their educational programming and community empowerment work. Really a great resource for our city.

Seattle Tilth read my complaint on Unilocal in summer 2009 and allowed my son to attend another class for free in Sept. 2009 and it was a far better experience than the first class he took from them. I am very pleased that we gave Seattle Tilth a second chance and they gave my preschooler son at the time another chance.

Classes at Tilth are so great. I took the «Building unique Garden Beds» class and, with the August member special, I brought a friend for free. We learned more than just about building beds, we covered basic composting, permaculture, and had a few questions /​answers.

My 3 year old daughter and I completed our first day of Slimy Creatures at the Seattle Tilth and we loved it! The instructors have thoughtfully put together the class and created several activities perfect for the 3 – 5 year old audience. Making and drinking sun tea was a highlight. We sipped our tea while sitting in the garden listening to a story about slugs. Right up my child’s alley.

Just got back from a kids gardening class. For the 2 and under set, parents/​caregivers have to attend, but honestly it was an education for me. Today’s class was «Fly Like A Beetle» and we learned about the life cycle of a ladybug. Did not know that a ladybug was of the beetle variety. Got some ladybug anatomy under the belt (can we say «exoskeleton») via a spirited puppet/​fuzzy animal show. Never knew that ladybug larvae could be so cute. Also learned a few insect songs that contain the words «mandible» and «thorax». Too fun!
For the kiddos, there was watering of the plants and flowers, plus some useful tips on teaching them how to water the «feet», not the «arms» and how to mind their toes and feet. Also super was a manner to teach kiddos how to pick flowers & herbs– use two hands, one for holding the plant and the other for picking. Even adults have a hard time being «gentle» with the plants.
The children’s garden is spacious and inviting at Seattle Tilth, while the adult garden has less moving room but cool things like smelly voodoo lilies. Check it out.

Our first venture to Tilth was earlier this year for plant starts. We hit it on a Thursday and even though we arrived early, there was already a New York City line. We ended up purchasing a ton of plant starts and seeds and walked out loaded and happy.
Fast-​forward a few months and I am DAILY enjoying fresh lettuces from my Tilth garden. Both the starts and the seeds were successful for the most part and I will definitely be back next year. Some lessons I learned from my first year:
Go on a weekday if at all possible.
Arrive early and suck it up if there’s a line.
BRING YOUR OWN CONTAINERS.
Have cash on hand.

Ok, I have officially been a member of Tilth for almost a year. In that time I have bought some excellent starts, taken classes, read the news letter and benefitted from the extensive collective knowledge of the Tilth employees, volunteers and members.
I can’t tell you how happy I was with my 8 tomato plants I bought last year. My favorite was the green zebra, it tasted like no tomato has ever tasted. I also appreciated that the starts were already hardened off (ready to plant outside).
I’m currently taking the Comprehensive Organic Gardening course and for about $ 200 I’m getting 4 evening lectures and 3 Saturdays doing hands on stuff in the Tilth garden. I’m learning so much about everything from composting to garden planning and I still get to learn about cloches, cold frames and growing plants from seeds.
Tilth is an excellent local resource. Become a member, be a volunteer or call the free Garden Hotline for gardening advice. Everyone who works for Tilth is very knowledgeable and extremely nice.

Seattle Tilth is a wonderful organization worth supporting! They offer classes on raising chickens, and every spring they have an extensive veggie start sale in Wallingford. You may not know how much you need them in your life until you visit their website and get sucked in!

I spent many years volunteering here and wandering, learning about gardening and preserving and building garden earth. I am still learning. I will be volunteering this year as I couldn’ t get a Pea Patch. ok I am like number 75 on a waiting list ! that means no gardening! So I am blessed to be allowed and invited to work here.
The staff is so knowledgeable. The classes fees vary: from free to around 20.00 –35.00. You can volunteer; you can observe; you can donate; you will always benefit from this beautiful peaceful well-​tended space. Change happens continually.

I started volunteering in the Demonstration Garden just two weeks ago (I skipped last weekend — sorry, Katie!) and everyone was really nice to me. It was a lot of fun to actually get dirty and work hard, especially with people who are excited to be doing it with you.
I’m going to continue volunteering here… forever?

I brought the girls to the gardens today and they had a great time looking at all the flowers and plants. Fun place for kids to check out.

Fantabulous group of conservation-​minded, organic growing, urban/​suburban gardeners with a beautiful demonstration garden in the city. The setting at Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford is perfect for strolling the grounds, walking the dog and running the children around till they fall asleep with exhaustion.
