Vegetarian Sandwich was delicious and filling! Doesn’t taste empty and veggie-like, but it has a mixture of different tastes that are just exciting to eat. It came with a side of chipotle seasoned tortilla chips. The character of this café was similar to that of Ugly Mug Café, which is also in the U-district. Drinks: italian soda is served with a bottle of mineral water that you can continue to refill in the soda class as you drink it up. americano was tasty. PIRQ is what brought me here. Worth it. Only reason it doesn’t get a 5 star is because the guy working wasn’t as friendly or warm. Other than that it was great. Wi-Fi: i thought there was free wifi, but apparently there isn’t…

This was my 3rd or 4th favorite café along the Ave and was the closest to my apartment. I liked the atmosphere of this café because it had a cozy, tucked away in the corner vibe plus it was conveniently adjacent to an independent theater. I had their Smoked Salmon Cheese bagel, which tasted pretty good, but the thickness of the bagel was too overpowering. Their vegan chocolate chip cookies were good, but I think overhyped by other Unilocalers. Lastly, one superficial reason I like this café is its unique name. Who wouldn’t want to hangout at a place called Starlife on the Oasis? Apparently, more than I thought — it closed 2 months ago :(

Wings made the best cocoa in the entire U-District(the secret was a shot of heavy cream). Sad to say that Star Life closed at the end of January(2014). Gonna really miss the salmon spread and vegetarian sandwiches!

This place has a great selection of vegetarian food and awesome teas, haven’t tried their coffee yet. What I found disappointing was when I asked what my options were for bread on my vegetarian sandwich and was given a snide remark that«this isn’t Chaco Canyon.» That made me want to never come back again. Shouldn’t businesses be supporting other businesses or at least not showing a customer how bitter you are toward it. Do you want business or not???

Great studying atmosphere, solid wifi, bigger tables than many other coffee shops, convenient hours, and the BEST vegetarian sandwich I’ve ever eaten!

This is the first café I’ve been to on the Ave that actually does Espresso right. Even before classes start, during lunch hour you’ll be lucky to find seating. I don’t want to know what this place looks like when all the students come back from summer vacation. But it’s definitely worth it. Fairly quiet and peaceful, away from campus but not too far. It’s worth the walk up from UW, if you’re a student. Or maybe you’re just looking for someplace casual and peaceful to sit while you’re on break from work. Very cool vibe, with interesting artwork and mismatched furniture. Either way, I enjoyed my espresso here. It wasn’t very flavorful, but it was well-made and very strong(which beats being watered down, for sure). They also give you a bit more espresso compared to other cafes on the Ave. Lots of crema too, which puts it a step above anything south of 45th. Quick note, though: they place a charge on your card for anything under $ 10, I believe, so remember to bring cash. I’ll definitely be back here to study and knock back more shots of espresso during my upcoming stressful quarters.

Dear all other places who make vegetarian sandwiches — you’re pretty good, and I’m gonna let you finish, but Star Life makes the best vegetarian sandwiches OFALLTIME. Truly — every delicious thing you would want on your veggie sandwich is well represented(including avocado and MANGO, what?!). The food is super fresh and inexpensive and good for you, and you couldn’t ask for a better setting. This is a great café with an owner who is dedicated to serving the best stuff every day. Breakfast sandwiches, homemade soups, juices, delicious teas and all the standard coffee drinks. You can hang out here comfortably — I’ve seen study groups, Meetup gangs, awkward first dates and late-night cram sessions here. Everyone’s welcome. Wings gets a hundred stars in my book, but I’ll settle for Unilocal’s five.

I visited Star Life during my recent(albeit brief) stay in Seattle. I hadn’t been since 2010 when I graduated from the UW and left the area. Climbing the crooked, green stairs to its entrance was like a walk down memory lane. As I entered, the owner immediately recognized me and we picked up where we left off on our last conversation several years ago. I’m thrilled he’s still in business and, other than a few furniture rearrangements and menu changes, doing what he always did. Star Life is still one of Seattle’s greatest escapes and well-kept secrets. Drop by, strike up a conversation with Wings, and have him serve you some black bean soup or a steamy Americano. You’ll love it.

Great student oriented café and a very great escape for a Seattlite. There is free wifi, great staff who never pressures you to order more, and great refills on coffee. The food is also of high quality, although many people are not aware that tell sell food. It’s a hidden gem run out of an old school cinema. I wouldn’t pass up this little Seattle gem. It’s one of the few hidden cafes that helped earn Seattle it’s place as a coffee town.

My wife and I really enjoyed the Vegan and Vegetable sandwiches. The salad was as fresh as fresh could be and their house balsamic was an incredible accent to already-made goodness. Their selection of teas was awesome. We opted for the Lavender and Licorice. Both were flavorful and very good!!! The atmosphere was quiet, yet smooth-groovy. We may go back for a road sandwich tomorrow.

Magnificent service, quiet study environment, adorable interior. I had a vegan pineapple, green apple, avocado, lemon, vanilla bean smoothie that was to die for. Love it!

I love Starlife! They have great tea and wonderful sandwiches(their prices are on par with other nearby). Highly recommend the veggie sandwich! Great for studying or chatting. My only complaint is that they open at sort of random hours on Sunday. I’ve come here at 11am and 11:30am on separate Sundays and they we’re open.

In search for a cozy place to enjoy lunch with work friends, we stumbled upon Starlife on the Oasis Café for crepes, sandwiches, and lattes to get us going for the rest of the workday. Cozy this place IS… and a little tight during the lunch rush hour. After we sucked in our stomachs and squeezed past the front door to the front ordering counter, we realized we may not fit in with the many stressed out students frantically studying for finals. But, our little famished selves didn’t want to venture to another place on the Ave, so we prepared to order their delicious crepes… but wait, no crepes? You’re out?!? WTH! After being thrown a curveball, we settled for sandwiches and salads and pouted our way to our table where we waited about 40 minutes for our food. We were starvin’ like Marvin but I honestly couldn’t get upset at the lag because the poor guy behind the counter was there all by himself, whipping up lattes, dishing up plates, serving, etc. With wired students and ravenous folk, such as myself, this guy did his best to get everyone their order. I ordered their greek salad which was abundant, fresh, and absolutely delicious. I heard the sandwiches were equally fresh and tasty, and their vegan chocolate chip cookies are huge and devine! I would be glad to give Starlife an extra 1 – 2 stars when I try their crepes, which just means I’ll be back for more!

Awesome hidden gem. This place has not gone mainstream, which is what makes it so great! The help is personable, the food is delicious and under priced. The java is great & also bargain priced. Not a huge menu, but this fact has allowed them to make out of this world chili! This is my new haunt, come say hi 2 me here. PS Wings is very personable and great!

I’m a patron at Starlife. I am broke and yet there are two aspects that keeps me coming back: Wings and the«bombass food»! Wings, the owner, will make you feel like your family, while the food is accommodating to everyone: vegans, vegetarians, or meat eaters. Whatever you want, he has. Stop waffling and just go to Starlife. P. S. the place is hard to find but it adds to the cosy cavelike feel of the place.

If I gave this place five stars the first time and re-reviewed it, only to give it five stars again… does that mean it gets 10 stars? I have been there a ridiculous number of times in the past two weeks and this is what I have found: 1) the black bean chili is ridiculously delicious!!! it comes with grated pepperjack cheese on top(and sour cream, if you’d like. i don’t like.) that melts right into it and a nice thick slice of bread on the side. $ 6 for a huge bowl. if i could have it every night for dinner… i would. 2) i have so far had 3 out of the 6 or 7 cookies they serve here and, just as the owner had promised, they were ALLFREAKINGDELICIOUS! i am generally not a crispy cookie fan but the chocolate chip cookies have me converted. 3) the owner is super duper nice and seems to be friends with all of his customers… and his customers dogs! i may never leave.

This café scores fours across the board, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts — hence, the 5-star score. The coffee and espresso drinks are a class above what you’ll find at the Starbucks/Tully’s constellation a block away. The food is also pretty good, too — I have their bagel with smoked salmon cream cheese(no, this does not mean slices of smoked salmon — find someplace fancier for that). Although it’s a humble sandwich, they add a touch of care by topping it with thinly sliced cucumbers and tomato, and capers.(Their crepes however were just so-so, but are reasonably priced, like everything else on the menu.) The guy who serves up this goodness from behind the counter has an extremely laid-back vibe. There’s free wifi and the ambience is great — an artsy living-room-like feel, with an assortment of wooden tables and chairs, and a fireplace along one wall.

My friends all seem to have the highest possible opinions of this place, but when I’ve been there it’s been nothing more than a standard coffee shop in Seattle. It’s probably a nicer place to sit and read a book than it is a place to work, but usually I’m more interested in a different place to work than a place to read a book. Also, the reviews say there are great sandwiches. I can’t say I’ve ever had the food, so I’ll have to take their word for it.

Little-to-be-seen but has LOTS under this little café’s belt. The owner is super friendly, makes the yummiest sandwhiches, and I got a free refill on my iced tea. Place is a little shabby than cozy, although its perfect for students. Hands down I will be back only cause the owner was über-nice and everything there is homemade on the spot.
