Tall Grass Bakery

I’m addicted to the salty and soft pretzel buns. Tried the sourdough and didn’t think it was anything special. I did like the hominy bread but it got moldy after only a few days. This is really close to my house so I always pop in for a pretzel bun around 10:30 — 11:00am, when they’re just out of the oven.

Tall Grass is a small shop that offers solid bread selections and a short list of sweets. Their ginger cookies are good, especially if you can get them right from the oven, and make for a perfect winter treat.

I love having Tall Grass Bakery in the neighborhood. The delicious aromas of freshly baking bread fills the air surrounding the store. And once you’re inside, fantastic tasty goodies abound.
I’ve bought a raisin challah and a baguette, and both were excellent. The baguette was crunchy on the outside and perfectly soft and flavorful on the inside.
I can’t wait for the next excuse I have to spend 2 – 3 times the amount I usually would on bread (the baguette I bought yesterday was $ 3.75).

This should have never been sold, orange poppy seed which tastes very old and the top is burnt.

Based on the many good reviews here I made my way today to the Tall Grass Bakery over in Ballard.
I found a parking spot right in front of the Bakery what was nice, the shop itself is pretty unimpressive (outside as inside).
I liked that they hat a nice small variety of different breads like sourdough an pumpernickels, also the baguettes looked pretty good.
I decided to go for an honey&oat bread and a pretzel bun.
Well… the pretzel bun was a big disappointment for me. Sorry, but for a price that high (2,50 $ for a pretzel bun!) I think you can get much better pretzel buns/​rolls elsewhere! (Even compared to the whole bread for 5 $ the price is insanely high but I thought it has to be really good for that price)
It’s chewy, it is far too soft and spongy, it doesn’t really have a good lye-​taste. Sorry, but calling something like that a pretzel bun is an affront against all real pretzel-​style baked goods (I think I was far too optimistic because of my great experience at Franky&Doms on Mercer Island last week).
The Honey&Oat Bread tasted pretty good, was well made, fresh and looked nice. That’s how I like a bread. Soft on the inside and a light crust on the outside so your teeth can get involved while your eating. In fact the bread is the only reason why I give 3 stars…
The girl behind the counter was slightly friendly but seemed to be bored. Maybe she just had a bad day, but a smile won’t hurt.
All in all I’m not sure if I want come back here again… Pike Place Market is closer to my home and there I can rely on fresh good bread, and a source for pretzel rolls I got last week on mercer island…

The gentleman that helped me was so sweet and adorable! I love this place! Will probably be a regular spot for me, even though it’s slightly out of the way it’s perfect place for me! Just a bread place for items I need. I got a pretzel abs granola as well, they were both AMAZING!
Can’t wait to go back there again!

Great bread, normally $ 5 – 8 a loaf.

I was craving a cinnamon roll so I jumped on my bike and rolled over to Tall Grass. I got the small cinnamon roll with raisins. I took a bite and was let down. I grew up with whole wheat cinnamon rolls with not much sugar or spice but that was free this was $ 3. Sorry but I will not be back for the slightly dry bland bread like roll with dried out raisins. Sorry guys but I would not pay $ 1 for what you are making. I mean at 9:30 AM things should not be that bad. The other reviews of Cinnamon rolls, What did you get? Very cute place with nice people though.

Great bakery and great staff. Our favorites include the walnut pain au levain, chocolate chip cookie, etc.

I go here pretty much weekly for the granola and usually end up buying a loaf of bread and various baked goods while I’m there. The cinnamon raisin cookies are fantastic as well as the scones. Delicious all around.

The bread here is AMAZING! The baguettes are the best in town and my favorite! I’ve had baguettes from Le Fournil (u. district), Le Panier (pike place) and Le Pichet (downtown sea.) and from a few other spots and I can honestly say, they do not compare to tall grass baguettes! The smell, taste, texture is on point! Love their cinnamon rolls, brioche buns and cookies too!

2 stars is for the service, not the bread, which we fell in love with. The whole grain seeded bread makes the BEST toast ever! It’s the only bread we’ve been buying for toast for many months. We also love the fougasse, and would make up excuses to buy it with no definite plan. But about every 4^th loaf, the top of the seeded bread would fall off the slices, making small toast, and expensive bread crumbs. When we talked to the person at University Market about it, he said he had had other complaints of this, but offered no apology, or indication that they were trying to fix the problem. In fact, he finally said «I don’t have time for this». So we emailed the owner, as we love this bread, but $ 6.50 is too much to pay for losing ¼ of the loaf. A week later, no response at all. And yes, the loaf we bought that day fell apart, 2^nd one in a row.

One word: CINNAMON ROLLS — okay maybe that is two words. But just trying to say a must try. Their cookies are also big and so chewy delicious. Everything is baked there on the premise so you can see. There is no sitting and it’s all take away. It has this «old world charm– rustic» feel to it upon entering.
When you think of a «bread line» your mind may perhaps take you to the depression era, but here at Tall Grass Bakery the line for bread is truly out the door and that’s because of it’s wonderful selection and tasty artisan breads!

Nice little bakery with a good selection of different kinds of bread. There were also buns and different cookies available as well. I’m sort of selective when it comes to bread, and the man there seemed very knowledgeable with the selection there. He ended up recommending the oat and honey bread, which I totally loved. Before we left he also gave us a sample of the pretzel, which had a nice herby aroma.

Seattle really enjoys several wonderful artisan style bread bakeries, but Tall Grass has become my, «go to place» for fine fresh breads. The cookies, scones and pretzels are loaded with flavor, too. The Hazelnut Shortbread and the nice and spicy Ginger Molasses cookies are almost impossible to resist. They feature an incredible European style sourdough rye, a little bit lighter than what I regularly grew accustomed to and enjoyed while living in Germany, but close enough to the real thing that I keep buying it again and again.
The pain levain makes my favorite breakfast toast and the richly dark pumpernickel rye is so hearty especially grilled with a fine pastrami and good cheese. Oh what a unique Reuben Sandwich that bread could make!
The hominy bread is a fun treat and makes marvelous sandwiches or a delicious accompaniment to a good bowl of soup or stew. The hominy loaf is so good toasted, I’d like to dry out a couple of loaves and use it for a turkey stuffing some Thanksgiving.
It’s fun to try out different loaves here, but also somewhat difficult because we keep returning for more of the same fine breads we have already savored and appreciate. The breads are so good that I often skip adding butter to them so as not to distract from their wonderful flavors. What an excellent location — right next door to the divine Café Besalu — two rather complimentary style bakeries practically under the same roof! I really appreciate the fine customer service at this establishment, too.
When not in Portland, we buy our breads at Tall Grass Bakery. Bread just doesn’t get any better north of the Columbia River.

I am glad we discovered this bakery. We always stop by when we are in seattle. The bread is some of the best we have had and i really enjoy their cinnamon buns. They are moist and delicious.
The staff is friendly and there is plenty of street parking. Stop by and give it a try.

Based on the other reviews, I really hope we just had an off experience that isn’t reflective of the norm here.
In search of a snack, we wandered in after seeing the cookies through the window. The nice guy behind the counter was super courteous and attentive and in short order we were out the door with two cookies and this dense, round gingerbread loaf, eager to eat the cookies as soon as we found coffee, and saving the bread for the next morning.
The cookies were not very good. The ginger molasses cookie had so much molasses in it as to be the only flavor you could taste, as if you just stuck your finger into the jar of molasses can called it a day. The resultant cookie was doughy and teeth-​hurting sweet. Wasn’t finished. The other cookie was also left ¹⁄₃ eaten, although when I asked later what flavor had been chosen he couldn’t remember anything other than it was like doughy shortbread.
The ginger loaf was not much better. It wasn’t until we took it out of the plastic bag that we noticed it was burned on the ends, which is an easy slice-​off fix, but still. Sliced and warmed, the first thing we noticed was that it didn’t taste anything at all like gingerbread. Just bland, dense, and with a weird aftertaste. Not even appetizing as just a dense bread. It got tossed.
Maybe our lesson learned here is not to try the sweet offerings.

Great place to pick up a pullman loaf (i.e., square bread). I wish they’d offer a whole wheat one, though. I do like that you can buy half of loaf because who needs to eat that much white bread. :) The chocolate chip cookies were also very good… just like homemade. I haven’t tried the baguettes but based on the Unilocal reviews, I will try one the next time I stop by.
If you don’t live in the neighborhood, parking can be a pain since it’s on street only.

Excellent baguettes — probably my favorite in Seattle. The balance of the crusty crunch and soft inside is perfectly done. You can frequently find a new batch, fresh out of the oven.
I usually get baguettes here, but the cinnamon rolls are great also. The people are helpful and friendly also — once they gave me a whole bunch of free brioche buns when they heard I was gonna make some burgers at home.

Okay «Tall Grass» you have elevated your star rating to a 4. You are my rebound «go to» place when I head for Café Besalu only to discover that I missed them again because of their eccentric weekday store hours.
Your Pecan sticky buns make my day. Your Pullman classic white French bread (made from organic wheat flour) reigns superior to other white breads (whether I serve it with bacon & eggs or if I use it to make a delicious deli sandwich. I keep coming back so obviously you are growing on me.
Tip: If you want their Pullman white bread to last more than one day take it out of the plastic bag and put it in a large Glad bag. The bread won’t harden and stale as quickly and will last about 5 days longer.
