Verity Credit Union

Dennis is fabulous! He always remembers us. He even called a couple weeks after we opened just to check in and see how everything was going. I was sad to leave my old credit union but coming here is a blessing! Also, when I refer people I get points towards free stuff. When I sign up for auto deposit I get $ 25.00. With all their money back we have gotten like $ 75-​$ 100 back the first month!
Everyone is friendly and we love this friendly location. Big plus– extended hours!

The only problem I had with them was when they send you the skip December payment for x-​mas, so you can use the money for x-​mas gifts and what not. Verity Credit Union will count this as you skip payment for the rest of the year. For example, I used the skip payment for x-​mas, (but you still send them a 35 or 25 dollar check) but when I couldn’t pay for the month of feb they said I already used my «skip payment» for the year. I only used the skip payment for the past year not the year I was requesting. They said otherwise and said it’s within a time span of 12 months not the year. Well, all I can say is ask questions before you fill out forms.

Verity credit union has generally pleasant tellers and bankers. The do however have an ungodly slow system of processing, and enjoy charging huge overdraft fees because their system does not register your money quickly enough. After over 2 years of being patient with Veritys shotty system, I’m switching to BECU this week.

NOTE: This review is about Verity Credit Union and their abhorrent customer service and policies overall, not about this particular branch. This is their headquarters as far as I can tell so it made sense to leave this review here.
I have been with Verity Credit Union since before they were Verity Credit Union. Had an account with NW Federal Credit Union (I think that’s what it was called) since about 1982. Well, I am officially severing all ties with them. Good riddance! This place has gone from bad to absolutely atrocious in the last 5 years or so. And if they can treat me this poorly I can only imagine how little regard they have for their newer «members».
BEWARE. This is not your friendly neighborhood credit union. They have instigated all of the same predatory policies that the big national banks have. For example:
1) The unwanted and unknown, random automatic enrollment into «overdraft protection services» that will continue to clear debit transactions even while your account is negative, incurring a $ 28.00 fee each time for this «convenience». Not kidding, that’s what the lady on the phone there called it over and over…
2) They reorder your transactions to force you to go negative on your account as quickly as possible so they can get overdraft fees from you. I had an instance where I made several debit card purchases one morning and then late that night made a large one — didn’t realize it would overdraft me. Instead of clearing the smaller ones and then overdrafting the largest one, the reordered the transactions so the largest one cleared first and made my account go negative, and then subsequently cleared the smaller ones afterward getting an overdraft fee out of me for each one.
3) They cut lines of credit without warning. Still never got a reason from them. One day my credit card has an $ 8,000 limit with about a $ 3750 balance, the next day it has a $ 2,000 limit and I need to pay the amount I’m now over the limit or I’m going to be sent to collections. WTF?
4) Constant Bait and Switch on accounts and services. I was one of the first to hold what they called a «Velocity» checking account. Interest rate of like 4−5% at first. Then it’s cut down to 3%. Then it’s cut down to 2%. Now I think they stopped advertising because it’s down to around 1%. All the meanwhile the requirements to have the account keep going up, the services keep getting reduced, and the fees are increasing.
Mind you I’m not an irresponsible person. I am a young professional that maybe overspends on occasion but I make good money and am trustworthy. so trust me, this is not the place you want your money. I urge you to go to BECU. I have had accounts with them now for a few years (ever since my problems with Verity started) and I could not be more pleased. The people are nicer, they are not manipulative, and they tell you exactly what to expect and they live up to it. If you don’t choose BECU just please choose somewhere else. Anywhere but Verity.

Everything the other reviewers have said about the Downtown branch applies here. This is the best way to weather any economic times. I’ve been with them for 13 years, despite moving all over the place. Here’s why:
1. I get 5% interest on my checking account. I sh*t you not. Free money. No strings attached.
2. I ALWAYS deal with a real human being, really fast, whether I call, email, or walk on in
3. They’ve given me money on 2 occasions for submitting essays and photos
4. No fees for anything. They even reimburse the ATM fees other stoopid banks charge me
5. Last time I walked in there (Wallingford branch), they shredded my old checks, printed me some new ones on the spot, and handed me a tube of tasty organic chapstick (all free). Beat that! The teller was even cute!
6. They never invested in that Wall Street B.S. They have the kind of scruples that Greenspan was counting on the other guys to display (hah)
7. When my laptop got stolen, they worked with me to close out accounts, change things over, and smooth out all the gnarly transitions involved in that process.
