This is a seriously cool place. It is, firstly, exactly what the name implies: The West Seattle Tool Library has an inventory of over 1500 tools for members to borrow. Most anything you might need for a home, yard, or car project can be found here. It is the perfect way to not have to buy a tool you’re unlikely to use more than once. Or, a perfect way to figure out if something you’ll use more often is the right tool for you. In addition to this, the Tool Library offers classes on various DIY-related issues. Their on-line blog contains detailed information on common and not-so-common tools. They host«ask an expert» nights in which anyone is welcome to come and get(free!) general and project-specific advice from carpenters, plumbers, etc. The Tool Library is volunteer-driven. Folks from all walks of life who believe in its mission volunteer time, money, expertise, and tools; together, they make the Tool Library a success. My husband and I have been members of the Tool Library for a couple of years and have always found the people working there to be friendly, knowledgeable, and very happy to help with any questions we might have. Membership rates are very reasonable for you get in return. And lower income folks are offered membership at lower rates(or even no rate at all). The West Seattle Tool Library is a great community resource and one well worth supporting.

The West Seattle Tool Library is awesome. I love that I don’t have to buy tools that sit unused 99.9% of the time, and that I have access to many more tools than I would otherwise. The people there are friendly, welcoming, and eager to help with any projects or questions you have. In addition to lending tools, the tool library also provides community access to a full wood shop. I’ve made plenty of use of the space to build furniture, art installations, and learn new skills. I only wish that the tool library were open more often, and that there were more of them in the world.
