Winchell’s Donut House

I agree 200 percent with everthing Andy W wrote. I will miss Winchell’s, it has been there ever since I can remember and that is a long time. Come to think of it I think that Winchell’s was where I had my very first donut. Now the nearest Winchell’s is in Ca. Well just another one of old Seattle places bite’s the dust. Ditto for the BF.

Sooooo sad to hear of the demise of Winchells.
Just like everything in Seattle now-​a-​days, a 50 cent bad-​for-​you donut is being replaced by a $ 2.25 vegan, sprouted wheat, non-​hydrogenated oil baked donut that will give you an extra 30 seconds of life in a nursing home 40 years from now.
Seattle is slip-​sliding away from us natives that remember what a great blue collar town Seattle was…
P. S. At least there’s still 3– Girls bakery @ the Pike Place Market for a true apple fritter.

RIP Winchell’s!!! You will be missed…

Sorry folks, this sad sack of a donut shop is closed for good. Thank goodness Rancho Bravo is still there!

Ive been a loyal Winchell’s patron for about 24 years. You got to love the greezy 2.99 a dozen incredibly unhealthy deep fried goodness. The taste has remained totally consistant sice I was 2 years old. Its a great place to stop after Dicks.

This place is closed. They werent good so no loss. Check out the taco truck in the parking lot. Rancho Bravo– amazing.

Wow. Woooow. 3 stars just for being a weird experience!!!
My friend was craving something chocolate.
We walked in.
He pointed to a donut, asking what kind it is.
The employee mumbled/​slurred something like «You want this one?»
He said he was just wondering what kind it was.
Employee told him (I think).
This happened about 2 – 3 more times.
He picked a chocolate donut. Hands employee $ 20.
Employee says «We don’t have change.»
«Guess I’m not getting a donut, then.»
We leave.
This place was just plain weird and I can’t believe they don’t carry CHANGE. I think I’ll skip it next time, but… it was kind of entertaining, so props for that?

I don’t like donuts.
Really, I just don’t. Instead of take them or leave them, I’d just like to leave them.
I don’t have much of a sweet tooth and when I do feel like eating something sweet, I want something better than a donut.
That being said, once in a great while — every 6 months or so — I get a hankering for some fried sugary goodness. Winchell’s is always my go-​to in these situations because I like the parking, I like the proximity to Rancho Bravo (I never actually GET Rancho Bravo on these donut runs, but it is comforting to be near) and I like the overall sketchiness of Winchell’s.
3 stars instead of 4 because they never have those chocolate old-​fashioned with the glaze on them. Those are the kings of the donut world.

Winchell’s is **the only** donut shop that has good frosted sprinkled donuts. You can get all the other kinds anywhere, but if you want **the best***frosted donuts with sprinkles like you got when you were a kid this is the place to go! My daughter never even wants a birthday cake. She asks for sprinkled dounuts from WInchell’s. I grew up on the donuts at the West Seattle location right next to Baskin Robbin’s. Now there is only a Starbuck’s there… sigh…SO glad this Winchell’s is around.
Alas…all good things must come to an end I guess… :(I think the nearest is now in CA…

I’ve been eating Winchells ever since I was wee high off the ground. This is the classic spot and imo the best Maple Bars I’ve eaten, besides the grocery stores.
The best glazed and it doesnt taste very sugary like Krispy Kreme. I like Krispy Kreme when I want it to melt in my mouth and chew with my front teeth because I need a cavity filled.

Semi-​stale lackluster doughnuts at standard costs. I’ve had better doughnuts from grocery store bakeries. I would avoid this place.

I’m not a big donut fan, but… peanut-​butter and jelly donut and free wifi… nuff said.

So we had just had lunch at the Rancho Bravo taco truck, and what better to wash your carne asada down with than a CHOCOLATE DONUT? Also, due to the limited seating at RB, we had sat at one of Winchell’s outdoor tables to eat, so I felt a bit obligated.
I don’t go to donut shops much, but this looked exactly like every other one I’ve been to — a bit larger and cleaner, perhaps (except for Tim Horton’s, which wins the Large & Clean prize on account of being Canadian). There was a fairly big seating area inside, with these weirdo posters that made me think of those lame corporate inspirational prints that say things like «Achievement» and «Teamwork.» I find it depressing to sit and eat donuts at a donut shop anyway, so I just glanced at it on the way out. There was a sign that advertised free wi-​fi, so, you know, there’s that.
I got a chocolate bar, and it was okay — a little stale (at 2:00 pm), but pretty much exactly what I expected. My dining companion said his apple fritter reminded him of «a supermarket donut,» and was okay but not great.
Earlier that day, we had passed the Krispy Kreme, and I think that’s what put the notion of donuts in my head. Probably should’ve just gone there instead and gotten a hot ‘n’ fraysh glazed donut handed to us free when we walked in.
P. S. But yes, like everyone else says, props to them for hosting Rancho Bravo in their parking lot.

I hardly ever eat donuts and I don’t even really like them, but I had the strangest craving for them as I was waiting for my tacos at Rancho Bravo. So I ordered two Boston Cremes – those are the only kind I even sort of like.
The donuts were dry and kind of hard. Not soft and moist as they should be. :(And the crème filling had a weird, banana-​y aftertaste. Gwoss!

Good fritters… Who knew that you could have a apple, blueberry, or a pineapple fritter? The night guy was busy at work making fresh donuts, which impressed me, when I stopped in after work for a fritter. I was making my Friday a fritter Friday. I had just worked two jobs and I wanted sugar! The texture was doughy on the inside with a crisp, but not deep fried, outside. I was pretty impressed– until I a Countryside fritter the next day. Still– it was tasty, and not overly glazed or sweet– just like I like my fritters. I don’t really care to try any of their other kinds because I assume, and probably correctly, that they are on par with any glazed I can get at a grocery store. Not a bad thing, not a great thing.

There is no way I am gonna cheat on Top Pot.

I’m not sure what is up with the super donut gourmand reviewers of this place. It’s not a Krispy Kreme? Is that a bad thing? What does the the sky looks like in your world, man. Seriously.
After a walk and some workout action, I wanted to poison my body with some fried dough and sugar, so I bounced over here.
I asked the nice guy what was fresh. He mentioned and gestured over to some old fashioned of various kinds cooling on wire racks. I said I’ll have one of those. He gave it to me. Not difficult, but you do have to emo down for a second and talk to people.
Boom boom. Fresh donut success story, pals. That and a black coffee from a large metal canister, and you have an all around winfest. Oh yes. I have a name this evening, and that name is Donut Victor.
Also, Johnny is talking about Ly’s, not Li’s. He’s a personable and cool Thai dude about 8 blocks and a number of stoplights away.
Update: If you’re going after like 8pm or so, they will only sell you old nasty donuts because the fresh ones are all «for orders.» You have another 8 hours or so, dude. You can sell me a couple. There is still time to make replacements.

I’ve just never been too impressed. The donuts are OK… they don’t keep them under the lights if I recall, so they’re always lukewarm, at best. The place is usually deserted, or has a couple weird old guys in the back yelling about local politics.
I like Li’s over on the other side of I-​5 a bit better, and actually Safeway or QFC have pretty good ones too.
