Workbench Building Design

After Adam built my incredible front porch, I hired him to re-​design and remodel my kitchen, which actually turned out to be a remodel of my whole upstairs. A huge job – and the outcome was better than I could imagined.
I have a 100-​yr old craftsman house, so part of the kitchen was original and much had been re-​done in the 60s/​70s – not pretty. The footprint was great, but the layout was horrible and inefficient with no flow. Adam drew up several plans for how to re-​design the space to fit my needs. I had some ideas, but ultimately we went with his that had us flip-​flopping the whole kitchen, taking out a partial wall and moving a door to my guest bedroom to improve the flow.
Onto the demo and construction — nothing ever goes smoothly in a project like this, but Adam took everything in stride (e.g., when we found SIX layers of very unlevel flooring to remove or a structural beam that needed to be added because previous builders didn’t have the roof supported correctly). Adam’s attention to detail, work ethic, and communication with me every step of the way made what could’ve been a very painful project a bearable one with a hugely enjoyable outcome. My kitchen looks ABSOLUTELY fantastic and I never could’ve done it without Adam’s craftsmanship and vision. I also found it incredibly valuable to have him do both the design and the actual construction – something that makes Adam stand out from your typical contractor.
I’ve recommended Adam to many friends looking to remodel their homes and I’ll continue to do so because a contractor like him is hard to find!

Adam and Dean have done several projects at our home and we have been very satisfied by their personal approach, their professionalism and follow-​through and by the quality of their work. Our daughter, who is 2 years old, still talks about Dean and Adam regularly because she spent so much time following them around. It is very typical of Adam and his crew that they were always very good natured and genuinely enjoyed her interest in their work. I would recommend them highly.
The two projects that Dean and Adam did for us were:
1. Address water intrusion on the east side of our home. They removed and propped up the porch connected to the home (to save us the cost of replacing the whole porch), then removed the improperly installed ledger board (nailed on to the old siding), removed all of the water-​affected wood, installed a double ledger with proper sheathing and re-​attached the price. For the scope of work, the price was very reasonable.
2. Built a stairway from our porch down to the first level of our home. This was done quickly, easily and within budget. Thanks Adam and Dean!

Dean and the team at Workbench completed a basement remodel for me in 2010. They remodeled our previously unfinished basement. The scope of work included:
Updating the existing attached garage:
— tore down walls and built new walls with a new garage configuration
— designed and built custom french garage doors
Bathroom installation:
— Created a ¼ bathroom where no previous bathroom existed
— Installed tile
Living room:
— Created a family/​entertainment room
— Built a coffered ceiling
— Executed engineering work to balance load across the ceiling
— installed in-​wall speakers
— painted
— installed a window
— installed all finishing touches (molding, etc)
— hung new doors
General contracting management:
— oversaw other subcontractors (plumbing, electrical, carpet, etc)
— managed permit process with the city
I can’t say enough good things about Dean and his crew. Among the highlights:
— Structured approach to project estimation and management. Dean was very structured, detail oriented and thorough. He gained my complete confidence in his approach.
— Cost competitive. I felt like I got great value for what I paid
— Attention to detail. The finer touches are really one of Dean’s strong suits. The molding, tile, paint, doors, etc are all gorgeous
— Strong communication skills … Dean kept me apprised of status continuously. I always knew where he was at in the process and any issues he was encountering.
Again, Dean was amazing. I know how hard it can be to find a contractor that is trustworthy and competent. He is now my de-​facto contractor for anything I need done around my house.
