What a great find near Sebago Lake! I’ve always wanted to go blueberry picking in Maine and was excited to find this orchard outside of Portland, where I had been visiting with my family. There were plenty of people on the Saturday that we went, but it never felt crowded. Crabtree’s is a small farm, but they still offer 5 different varietals of blueberries. I believe the names were: Blue Crop, Jersey, Elliott, Berkeley, and Blue Gold. The ones most prevalent in supermarkets are the large, plump Jersey blueberries which everyone seemed to flock to for ease of picking. However, I much preferred the low bush Blue Gold berries as they had an intense, sweet flavor, despite being quite diminutive in size. The farm seemed to be family-owned and a sweet elderly couple were manning the register. At $ 3 a pound, the pick-your-own blueberries were a steal. Great local stop if you’re willing to trek a bit off the beaten path!
