I’ll tell you up front that I’m not a huge BBQ fan. So, I admit that this is probably a bit of a biased review. With that said, I’ll say that Skeeter’s is OK. The menu is simple. The vibe /atmosphere is mostly what you would expect for a BBQ joint. I’ve been there a few times over the years. I had pulled pork and the beef brisket entrees. Both were OK. They tasted fine, but the quality, tenderness, flavor, etc. did not make me leave yearning to come back the next day for the experience. It was just OK. There are many positives though that make me almost give this place 4 stars. First, the highlight of the place is definitely the view of the river. And, if you go on a nice summer evening, the outdoor patio is great! They have live music on Sunday evenings during the summer, which is really nice. The prices are quite reasonable, I’d say even cheap, which is great for families. The establishment is quite family friendly. I’ve never had a problem with any workers there. Everyone is very friendly. The owners are kind people. I focus my rating of a restaurant mostly on the food experience, assuming nothing else was offensive. There is nothing offensive here. The taste of the food was OK. I’ve never had anything that I was disappointed with. However, I never had anything that made me rant and rave about what I ate. I did not leave Skeeter’s yearning to go back again the next day. It was all just OK. I’d recommend that you try it out, especially if you are a BBQ fan.

This place caught my eye as I was driving to Danville. Awesome location, up on a hill, overlooking the Susquehanna river. Amazing views from inside. You order at the counter, then they bring your food out. Excellent service by all staff, came by my table several times and asked how I liked everything. I had the brisket sandwich and the corn chicken soup. Both were great, although being from Texas, my expectations for the brisket were high. Not as smoky as some places, but very lean. Definitely worth a stop in if you are in the area. Won’t disappoint!!!

Edible, not awful. Everything has a decidedly pre-packaged taste. Cider slushy is 1% cider. Don’t bother. Wonderful view of the river.

This place has a great location on a hilltop over-looking the Susquehanna. The first thing I noticed is a lack of smoke smell – odd for a bbq place. Inside is spacious and clean. I went up to the counter and asked if I could get a combo plate of brisket & pulled pork. It wasn’t on the menu, but they accommodated my request. The platter came with baked beans and a corn muffin. The beans were navy beans that had a dollop of bbq sauce in the middle of the dish. The beans didn’t have much pizzazz. The corn muffin was very sweet and bland. The brisket was served on top of a piece of Texas toast. The bread was soggy and the brisket was well below par. There wasn’t much smoke flavor and no burnt ends. I was disappointed as brisket, if done correctly, is one of my favorite things in life. The pulled pork was juicy and had good seasoning. Overall, it’s a good place to get a decent meal, but don’t go expecting top-notch bbq. If the weather allows, sit on the deck to fully enjoy the view.

I am never disappointed when I visit Skeeters. The menu is simple and the food consistently good. Staff is attentive and service is fast. Entire place is very clean. They are as good today as the day they opened.

Went to dinner with a little trepidation after reading some of the Unilocal reviews. We are glad we did go here. Pulled pork, ribs and brisket were fine – not the most succulent I have ever had, but pretty good restaurant fare. The corn bread was sweet and the beans were actually cooked there, not poured from a can. I know there are a number of reviews here which blast this place, but I will eat here again. I think the negative reviews are just on for some epicurean schadenfreude.

Great view at a time of much needed rest(from the long drive) and a bit of repast to tide us over for the bit of journey left in our day. Loved the post and beam, A-Frame interior. Half of the pulled pork was tasty but could have used more sauce(but I like a good wet BBQ). The upside down pineapple pound cake with cherries in a thickened juice was pretty nummy. Would gladly stop there again to try other tasties on the menu!

This restaurant is our absolute favorite! The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. The view from that hill can’t be beat! They have the best chicken fingers, unlike any other restaurant, and their house barbecue sauce is very yummy! Don’t forget to add a brownie or chocolate cupcake with peanut butter icing for dessert!

It is true that this restaurant has a nice view standing hilltop and overlooking the water but I go to restaurants for food. Unfortunately, this is where they were disappointing. My girlfriend and I stopped here for dinner after driving south five hours from Buffalo, NY on our way home. They had a small draught system consisting of about five or so taps. They offered a couple decent craft beers so that is what I ordered. My girlfriend ordered the rib and chicken quarter platter. The portions were small and the ribs were burnt. She tried the cornbread and could not eat it due to being very dry and flavorless. When I mentioned this to staff I was told, «Sorry» then they walked away. No customer service was offered. Another reviewer mentioned no smell of smoke/bbq in or near the restaurant which is one of the first things my girlfriend noticed as we were walking in. What appears to be a large smoker sits behind the register but yet nothing. I cannot recommend this place based on price point, quality, and customer service.

Great bbq. Amazing veggie wrap. Delicious corn bread… Do your self a favor and order more at the cash register. This restaurant has a very unique ordering system. You order your food when you walk in, they give you your drinks and a number. Then you find a seat and wait for your food to arrive! We love it! We also LOVE the outdoor seating overlooking the river, beautiful. It is very kid friendly and we go here whenever we can!

Decent food, great views. For the price not a bad deal. The outside eating area overlooks the susquehanna and makes for a nice night out.

No smoke smell but the pulled pork the brisket both bland lacking rub or seasoning at all must have been cooked in the moms of and not real southern BBQ Pit BBQ by any means coleslaw was watery but ok beans plane no heat no taste and blend pork inside didn’t give it to help cornbread a little over moist but apparently this place doesn’t know what good barbecue is

This place is good for the location and cleanliness of it only… absolutely NOT the food, the food is TERRIBLE!!! If u know anything at all about bbq then avoid this place like it’s going to give u a zombie virus b/c even they wouldn’t want to eat this food. I’ve been here four times in an attempt to find something edible to no avail. The smoked chicken is the driest thing I’ve ever tried to choke down with no smoke flavor whatsoever. Even the brisket at this place is dry… The only wet thing on ur plate is the soggy bread they serve it on. Don’t bother trying to add sauce to make it edible, it tastes like canned tomato sauce with sugar, vinegar, and something else… possibly garlic powder… that’s it. The portion is a bit small for the price but you’ll be glad b/c u won’t be able to finish it anyway. The owners of this establishment clearly don’t eat here otherwise they would do something about the horrible food and if they do think this is good bbq they must be from England or Canada b/c they’ve never really had bbq in their lives.

Bedding go chasing waterfalls. Never have I had a more fulfilling or utterly scrumptious BBQ in all of my time on planet earth. Skeeters transcends the mortal shell of your average BBQ joint, and has officially become a meal for the gods. The pork, the ribs, wow, what a meal.

It’s becoming tradition that I stop here every time I make the drive to/from NC to NY. There is an amazing smell the second you walk in the door! I have only gotten the pulled pork sandwich which is very reasonably priced. I had to have a piece of corn bread-yum! Service is quick. It’s a well kept restaurant with a beautiful view of the river.

I’d probably really give this 3 stars, the food is OK, but I think there’s something disingenuous about advertising your restaurant as Pit BBQ if you’re not smoking the meat(or at least it didn’t smell or taste like they do). The pulled pork at least had good texture and the BBQ sauce had good flavor. The sandwich could have really used some coleslaw though. Prices are not too bad, but not great for what you’re getting. Stop by if you’re hungry and craving meat, but otherwise, skip it.

Visiting Skeeter’s is a must stop on our drive from VA to NY. I’m not going to say we plan our trip around the restaurant, but, I mean, my tummy does not complain if we just so happen to get to Shamokin Dam when I’m hungry. :) I have had just about everything on their menu in the 8+ years I have been accompanying my husband up to see his folks and can’t think of one thing I didn’t like. Their corn bread is phenomenal, as are their beans and coleslaw. The meat can be a little dry on a slow day, I would assume when they are slow it spends too much time under the heat lamp. However, usually this isn’t an issue as it is extremely tender, moist and flavorful. They also provide sauce at each table if you want more, but typically(like 90% of the time) you don’t need it. I have been known to dip my fries in it on occasion though. We recommend Skeeter’s to people making the trip down to us for the first time, and I find it amusing after the second or third time when they are proud to tell us they went back again.

I came across Skeeter’s on the way to see friends in Virginia. For a town called Shamokin Dam, there didn’t seem to be much food shamokin going on at this restaurant. Normally, I would expect to smell BBQ on entry to the establishment, from the meats cooking in the pit. Skeeters just smelled like empty restaurant. I’m not sure they’re actually smoking the meats here. If they are, perhaps they’re doing so only in January. I visited in August. I ordered pulled pork, beans, and coleslaw dinner. Pulled pork was served on top of a single slice of Texas-style toast. This was an unusual choice, and not how folks in Texas would actually serve BBQ. Beans looked like northern beans, not pinto beans like I’d expect at a typical BBQ place. Cornbread was very sweet, like cake. Can we get some jalapeño cornbread, please? Serving size was fairly slim for a dinner portion– the pulled pork looked a bit more like a sandwich portion, minus the top bun. Staff were friendly but a bit bored. No customers! Since the restaurant was near empty, I got a great seat with a nice view of the lake. This is obviously the selling point for Skeeter’s– a nice look out the window. I really felt like I needed a nice view since the food wasn’t anything worth viewing. In all, Skeeter’s is unremarkable. In fact, the only remarkable part about the place is that the choices were so off. The food wasn’t inedible, just very, very odd. Reminds me of what Northerners think of BBQ. No clue! Stick to BBQ in the South.

I stumbled onto SKEETER’S recently on a trip down to Baltimore. We were drawn in by the dumb name but stayed because there was no other readily available option due to our empty tank of gas and lack of knowledge about local eats in Shamokin Dam, Pennsylvania. Well, in terms of places you find off of the highway I’d say SKEETER’S did the trick. I usually wouldn’t give a joint of this quality 3 stars but I don’t think people have high standards when they’re stopping off a highway(and truthfully neither did I). I simply wanted something to go inside me, anything would do. My pulled chicken sandwich was pretty average and forgettable but it beats the hell out fast food when you’re hauling ass across America. The only two things that I really took issue with were: 1) I don’t know why they refer to this as «Pit BBQ» because I searched high and low but couldn’t find a pit. 2) The small, crappy bag of chips that came with my sandwich.(Skeeter, if you’re reading this, would it kill you to offer a real side like fries, coleslaw or a salad?) Despite the general forgettableness of SKEETER’S it does have a nice hilltop view of a lake. Now I’m no geographerstition but I think it’s a safe bet that the lake is, you guessed it, the Pacific Ocean.
