Glacial Potholes

The glacial potholes are cool and very interesting to look at but it’s not like it’s Niagara Falls or anything. I don’t mean to minimize them because it is beautiful to see how the ice carved the rocks and look at the various colors in the stone.
Definitely worth stopping by and taking a gander but in five minutes, you’ll have seen all there is to see.
I hope this doesn’t come across as anti-​glacial pothole because it’s not. I just wasn’t all that impressed.

When we are visiting Shelburne Falls, one of our favorite stops is visiting the Glacial Potholes after we spend some time walking the Bridge of Flowers. This interesting site shows some of Deerfield River’s bed which has been carved out by glaciers. It is great to see how the glaciers have cut away at the rocks as well as the fact in which the river flow has smoothed the stones.
The only downside about this site is that since Hurricane Irene the retaining wall holding the water from the potholes have begun to break and one of the sections has actually broken. This is a shame because it is difficult to see the potholes now that the water is overflowing.
In the end, this is a great site but it would be nice if they were able to repair the walls.

Go all the way down Deerfield Avenue all the way past the Rockwellesque shops… once you’re out of pavement vault the rail and climb down a few meters to where the flatter rocks are… look up and be amazed that something this beautiful is invisible from anywhere but where you’re standing…
Perfect for impressing a first date, enjoying a day out with friends or just giving your dog a tail wagging memory…
Swim at your own risk… dive at your own peril — the water is shallower than it looks…
