Hollywood Super Market

It’s all about the meat. Hollywood has the best. Their meats have flavor, and are trimmed very well with little waste. Hollywood and Nitsches are the only two places I will buy meat, and their prices are competitive with better quality and less waste than the chains. Their deli counter will even give you a taste of something if you ask. Their other grocery items and produce are about the same as other places, but weekly specials are usually good. Helpful friendly people here too.

Smallish market and not where I’d usually shop as it’s not close to home.
However, when it does happen to be on my way home, I have stopped in to pick up a few things.
It’s one of the grocery stores that generally happens to be nearly empty on a Saturday afternoon.
This visit, I was able to find everything I needed… the store was clean and the checkout lanes had no lines. Although the cashier had absolutely no expression on her face, she was quick, and I was out of there in no time.
I will return, when I am in the area and needing to pick up some last minute item.

Truly this place is a throwback to those of us old enough to remember Chatams, Farmer Jack & Great Scott!

Like today, I needed some coarse ground round, none available, so the butcher went in the back & made some fresh, and the cashiers & baggers are super friendly, plus any place this close to home that sells McClures Pickles…

This is a nice grocery store, sometimes they run good weekly specials. My fiancée and I went to buy milk that was on sale. We knew the limit was 2 per person. We each grabbed two and went to check out, we were even paying separately. The cashier lady assisted my fiancée first, no problem. When I went to check out, she was not charging me the sale price. So I questioned her… her response was, «the limit is two, your fiancée already got 2 for the sale price.» I told her it wasn’t fair because we were paying separately. Then she said «well it’s 2 per household» and I told her that we were from separate households and that we don’t live together… we even showed her our IDs to prove it! She started shaking her head, grunted and hastily gave me the sale price. I don’t know what she was huffy and puffy about, since there was no one in the store at 7pm on a Wednesday but the two of us. How about you serve the 2 customers in your store with some decency?
I told them I wouldn’t be coming back.

This is a cozy neighborhood grocery store. Being in an aging area of Shelby Twp. (near the Sterling Heights & Rochester Hills borders), it is probably the one of the more modest of its locations in metro Detroit. Inside, it is like a scaled down cozier version of Kroger. It seems that overall selection of grocery items is a little more lacking than say, Kroger, however, there is a little more attention to the customer. Perhaps this also has to do with the sad fact that Hollywood Market never seems busy and by default has a higher employee to customer ratio. Yeah, it has more to do with that, than it being a more customer focused market. The mere fact that this grocer also stocks pint sized liquor in addition to larger bottles, similar to a liquor store, is also another sad indication of the tough times in the surrounding areas. However, since I often get pints, this is a plus for me, lol.
Overall, Hollywood runs occasional deals (check their website), and the deli, meat market, and bakery would meet the expectations of simple folk. However, don’t expect the variety and high volumes you find at Kroger. I snagged a 10lb bag of chicken leg quarters at 43 cents/​lb. $ 4.30 out the door. That was a sweet deal.
Overall an average grocer, still worth checking out to see if it fits your needs. Still, I feel a little sad inside here when compared to being at the nearby Kroger or VG’s…
