Perhaps you find yourself driving from Chicago to Vermillion, SD and you realize you don’t actually go through(or near) Omaha so you get desperate for a dinner option. You will end up here — in a BP, with live music and Steak Night on Friday nights, eating the best home cooked food you can find for miles. Their menu boasts the best hot roast beef sandwich in Iowa. We ordered that and a chicken pot pie stew — served over biscuits! Service was quick, staff were amazingly polite and accommodating. We were wary of the place being in a gas station but this is a must stop if you are ever in this part of Iowa!!!

When on the road, we always look for Mom & Pop cafes for the good stuff, this is one of those places. Conveniently located off the I-80 in Shelby, Iowa. #corncribshelby for pic

This review does not include the restaurant, it only considers the gas pumps, grounds and convienence store side of things. First, the location is awesome. There’s a park right next door called«Agri-Symbol Park» that’s beautiful, serene and really well-maintained. The pump areas were fine. The inside offered the typical gas station fare alongside their restaurant. Service was awesome and way friendlier than most gas stations. Seems family owned and operated. We even got help getting some local fruit wines. If you need to stop along I-80, stop here!

Have been hearing about this Jem for over a year now & finally got to stop there. My son had been here so I took him & my daughter out to lunch on my day off before school starts for them. We got there lil after noon & the place was bustling took just a minute(if that) to get a table. We were greeted immediately by the very friendly staff. You can definitely tell & get the family run feel. They have an awesome choices on the menu. We took few minutes & they took our order, our food came with in a few minutes hot & fresh. My son had his favorite the The Homestead(slow cooked Roast Beef between slices of bread with mashed potatoes & gravy) a award winning meal. I had the tenderloin sandwich(it was also outstanding) with fries & my daughter had the smoked pulled chicken sandwich. Great portions for a reasonable price we all left full & satisfied. Place was clean, friendly & had awesome food! We will be back often

Outstanding breakfast, would definitely make this a regular stop on I-80. Fried potatoes, onions, green peppers, eggs, country sausage and marbled rye toast.

Very good gas station-restaurant mix. Bathrooms are very clean and the décor inside is inviting. The food is delicious, home-cooked stew, sandwiches, and pie. Waiters and waitress’ were friendly and professional. In addition, the gas-restaurant mix is convenient.

I would have never bet money I would find great food in Shelby, Iowa. I’ve never visited the state before and we were sucked in by the awesome barn/Midwest exterior design. The staff were excellent and reminded me of my Uncles… hardworking and good people. I had the hot beef sandwich and strawberry rhubarb pie and neither was anything less than perfect. We eat at pizza restaurants all over the Houston area and this little placed rivaled them all. Thanks for keeping it American!

Husband had a great hot beef sandwich and I had a delicious Reuben. Give it a try. We are in a semi, so our parking access is limited. We parked across the street and walked over. It was a good decision!

Excellent breakfast! My husband and I found this place on our road trip and we both agree it’s one of the best breakfasts we have had in a very long time. Simple food but fixed to perfection. My husband had 2 eggs that were cooked over medium perfectly, which never happens in a restaurant. 3 slices of bacon and not cheap crappy bacon. Thick slices that were beyond delicious! I had the rib tickler that came with 2 eggs(perfectly medium) with potatoes, onions, and peppers. Delicious! We would totally drive from KC to eat breakfast here again!

Mashed potatoes were very funny and the French dip should be called fat dip! The sandwich was literally 95% fat/gristle! Now I wish we had dined in so we could have returned it

The Homestead Hot Beef Sandwich is perfectly balanced beefy, salty, creamy potato goodness. Do not judge this place by its Barn Décor. The food here is on par with any hipster restaurants in a big city!

Okay burgers & fries at a reasonable price. I really like the décor. And the concept of completely integrating a sit down café, a gas station, and a convenience store is interesting. There were a few negatives. First, the place was completely understaffed for a busy Sunday afternoon. There was only one cook and one elderly waitress running EVERYTHING… from ringing up gas to taking food orders. Second, the waitress rolled her eyes when my wife asked what kind of fish was in the fish sandwich. This really pissed off my wife. Third, they completely forgot my daughter’s lunch order. Probably won’t stop next time. –Daddy Maxx Retro

«Named One of the Best Ma & Pa Restaurants in Iowa by Our Iowa Magazine» A very excellent choice for our family of four. There is a full gas and convenience store too, but it felt like a hometown restaurant with such speed and welcoming service. The food choices were ample, reasonably priced, and complimented with portraits and stories of local hometown heroes. The grill items are cooked as you wait and the home cooked items did not disappoint. Five stars for taste, atmosphere, and for treating my family with great service. The dinner was so good, we didn’t have room for dessert(what? how did that happen?).

We stopped here while on a road trip and are SO glad we did! First, the building is unique and very quaint on the inside. Second, everyone working there is incredibly nice! And lastly, the food is tasty! We ordered the sandwich sampler platter(with mashed potatoes/gravy) and grilled cheese with sweet potato fries. I definitely recommend both!

Eat the french toast here! It is beyond scrumptious. So driving through on our way elsewhere, we stop at a random spot for some gas, and see a gas station with a barn for a building and the word restaurant on the side. Of course, I have to check it out. And boy, it delivered! super friendly people serving cooked to order food. The French toast tasted like a beignet wrapped in funnel cake and drenched in awesome. And powdered sugar!
