Deseret Industries

Hmm. Where to begin. DI, as us Mormons call it, usually has a better selection in the thrift area but this store just had a lot of overpriced stuff that I didn’t find useful. What I do like about them is they give people jobs to help them get rehabilitated.
Pretty much 99% of what is at the DI was donated by a Mormon so if you have an issue with that, shop elsewhere. When we don’t have a niece/​nephew/​cousin/​sister/​brother/​uncle/​aunt/​grandpa/​grandpa/​mom/​dad/​fried/​co-​worker/​teacher/​neighbor to give our old stuff to, and if it didn’t sell on Craigslist, and if it didn’t sell at the yard sale, and there aren’t any missionaries who want it, then we donate it to the DI. This is the reason why most of the stuff is picked over and kinda off putting, because we use it up till it’s dead. Or grandma’s dead, and no one wanted it at the estate sale or after the funeral. Just sayin’.
I have a friend that is weird and will only wear thrift store clothes because he wants clothes that have already been lived in. (He’s an artist, that explains a lot.) I stopped in to see if there was anything I could buy for him. The guy’s department was super overpriced. $ 10 for a pair of used khakis? Say what? Those suckers are $ 7 at Value Village.
They also have women’s, juniors and kids clothing but I didn’t bother looking for me since everything was looking pretty rough. I did see a section with brand new coats for kids.
I roamed around the housewares section and find some ice trays that make the tiny cubes. Three trays for $ 0.75, sold! The rest just looked like really old and mismatched stuff. At other thrift stores I can find glasses and good plates for art projects, but not here. (Again, the good stuff goes to… you got the idea.)
In the back room, they had about a dozen kids bikes, ski equipment, soccer equipment and various yard tools. There were other sports things too. If that’s what you’re looking for, come here, because I don’t see these types of things at any other thrift store except DI.
Tons and tons of books here. They also have a whole corner dedicated to kitchen appliances and electronics. Again, it was overpriced. They were asking for $ 20 for a 15 year old stereo. Come on now.
They sell brand new bedroom furniture and mattresses.
All sales are final at the DI.
The parking lot is good sized. They have a giant metal bar that closes the parking lot when they aren’t open. Closed Sundays.

I don’t get out to Deseret very often, and every time I actually make it inside, I remember why. Although it’s a clean and well-​maintained store, they just don’t have very interesting stuff, and the prices can be bizarrely high on what is literally garbage (like old soy sauce bottles).
The store is pretty easy to get to off of Aurora and it has a big parking lot. It’s not very large inside, but it does have men’s and women’s clothes and shoes, kids’ toys and clothing, housewares and a small amount of furniture, and electronics. Although the majority of the floor space is dedicated to women’s clothing and shoes, I don’t often find interesting vintage or designer labels — it tends to be more like White Stag and Blair old-​lady stuff.
Their inventory seems to be generally in nicer condition than you might expect from a thrift store, but the prices are accordingly higher (usually more than I want to pay). When I see a used Forever 21 T-​shirt for $ 5, I feel like I could get a NEW shirt for the same price. As far as I’ve seen, they don’t really have discounts or sales, so the price on the tag is what you pay. They often seem to have full sets of dishes and glasses or china, so if you’re looking for a larger matched set, this might be a good place to try.
You probably already know that Deseret = Mormon, so if that influences your enthusiasm about shopping there, consider yourself warned…

Clean inside, well lit store, and there were empty fitting rooms. It was easy enough to find what I was looking for, a pair of jeans for a Halloween costume. One star off for slightly higher than justified prices. If you’re looking for a non scary/​dumpy retail experience that just happens to be peoples’ used stuff then this is a good place to go.

This is one of the best thrift stores I’ve encountered. It’s clean, the staff are very friendly, and most of the jeans are only $ 4! Excellent prices on most everything, esp. compared to Goodwill nowadays. The clothes sections are very well-​organized. I highly recommend it.

Check their hours before you go! We drove there today June 2013 and on Saturdays they now close at 7pm. We arrived at 7:15 thinking they were open until 8pm. We love shopping here and we live in Redmond!

This place is hit and miss, but when it’s a hit, it’s soooo good! I pick up things from Brand New Shoes, Christmas and other Holiday decorations, and they even have a nice little cabinet of «collectibles». It’s definitely worth a visit a couple of times a month.

Love this thrift shop. Our house is full of deseret furniture from our dining room table set, office desk, décor, large book/​dvd shelves.
I also love coming here for craft pieces, glass pieces, holiday stuff, board games, and misc items
Actually our first experience with Deseret was really significant and set the stage for almost a years worth of customer loyalty. We bought all the large items we needed to furnish our new rental in Shoreline. We brought our cars but the items were too large to fit in them so we had to schedule for our rental truck to swing by on the way to our move in. This didn’t quite work out with the store hours but the manager agreed to hold our stuff as late as possible and then to set it out front for us to pick up. This meant it could possibly be stolen right… but we didn’t have any options and if we lost the 100 $ worth of merch it wouldn’t be life shattering. But we got there and our stuff was sitting out front like we had agreed. The amazing part was that the manager had been driving by to check on our stuff until we were able to pick it up. He was passing through when we were loading up and we were able to thank him for keeping an eye on everything.
Love this place!

Decent selection of furniture, and awesome + semi-​new books! I was very happy to get some books that have been put on hold @ the library FOREVER, for super cheap.
Didn’t have a chance to look over the clothes and accessories. but hopefully will next time!

I have found some quality stuff here. I had been looking for a jean jacket that hadn’t been been be-​dangled in seattle for a long while and when i went to Deseret, I found lots of options! They also have some decent furniture, shoes etc. It hasn’t been completely picked over like my local Ballard goodwill. It’s clean and on the way back you can hit the «gross-​out» aka the grocery outlet for more cheap stuff. :)

This is one of my favorite thrift stores. I try to stop in monthly since their stuff turns over so frequently. Some of my finds include $ 5 Gap jeans, $ 8 David Kahn jeans, a super cute pair of Marc Jacobs shoes for $ 4 (!!!), and a mess of books for $ 1 or less. Their baby board books are $ 0.50 a piece! I also found a Bebe Au Lait nursing cover for $ 2 — those are usually $ 35. Score! I also spied a Dooney and Burke purse for $ 20. It wasn’t my style, but it was still a decent brand. Their nicer purses are behind a case. Just ask for someone to unlock the case for you.
When my baby started eating solids, I embarked on a baby food making adventure and decided to make 4 lbs of sweet potatoes for my baby. Note to self, 4 lbs of sweet potatoes makes a crapload of sweet potatoes. Sooo, when I realized that I needed more ice trays, I picked up a bunch here for $ 0.50−0.75 a piece.
The store is better organized than a Good Will or Value Village, and they have a few new items. Like most thrift stores, be prepared to hunt.

It very clean, the people are always friendly and helpful. Not always the most savvy fashion stylings but I feel that the price is good for what you get. Occasionally I find a few jewels but that’s the same with any thrift experience. Of all the thrift stores, this is my most preferred.
The Salvation Army is a Church so I don’t see why people make any negative comments about not going to this LDS Church owned thrift store.

This is a pretty interesting thrift store. For one thing they don’t seem to have that annoying smell that seems to hang around thrift stores. Secondly, everything seemed very organized, which isn’t the norm for thrift stores. However, they selections seemed pretty picked over, and I didn’t really find anything that interested me. I suppose if I went back often they might have things which came and went quickly. Otherwise, I wasn’t terribly impressed.

I used to frequent Desert, but rarely go nowadays. They increased their clothing prices and the store always seemed to be super busy whenever I went so I had to work my way around other people with carts in order to get to what I was trying to look at.
They had a good variety throughout the store last time I was there and their cashiers are always friendly.
As other reviewers mentioned, I too am always forgetting they are closed Sundays.

This is my favorite thrift store locally. The prices are good, and the quality of the merchandise is much better then Goodwill. The thrift store is part of the LDS church; however, shopping there you would not know that. There is no mention of religion inside, just a great quality thrift store.

We’ve been wanting to visit here but every time we’d swing by they were closed. We were probably always coming by the same time, because their hours seem pretty flexible (only closed Sunday).
Upon entry, it’s really clean for a thrift store. It almost looked like a Ross – a bunch of mish-​mash stuff but fairly organized.
Prices were a bit high for what they were. I’m used to getting shirts for $ 5 (these are collared, button-​up, requiring-​iron-​type shirts) and they had cotton tshirts for that much. Okay pass.
Then I went over to the housewares because I can’t stop buying bowls and dishes. They were nearly twice what you can get at GW ($ 10+). Pass.
The shoes were promising, the prices were $ 2 for shoes (the ones that caught my attention anyway), but it wasn’t enough to want to buy them. The book section was also decent, but I didn’t feel like browsing.
We were in and out in about 10mins, which isn’t really great compared to other stores where we can stay for ~1hr. Not sure if this will be in the rotation, but at least we can stop wondering what it’s like inside!

I should have posted my review of Deseret Industries years ago. What the hell was I thinking (or not)? This is one of my favorite thrift stores, a metaphoric treasure trove of stuff, always worth a quick look-​see if I’m in the hood. Also a very worthy organization to support. My favorite find was Athena, a dress form that I used until she sadly went to apparel heaven. I’ve been looking for a replacement ever since! (anyone come across a nice dress form, lemme know!) I’ve also found some great clothing deals items here.

so far the best priced thrift store i have found in the Seattle area. clothes that are actually less than 3 $ without having to wait for sale days. Housewares are about half the price of the same things at goodwill and VV.

In my limited research, the further away I travel from Capitol Hill, the better the thrift stores are and this is the best I’ve found yet. It’s clean, well organized, and inexpensive. I’ve found it a good spot to pick up vintage men’s clothing and appliances (especially interesting old clocks), but the first time I went, they also bizarrely had some decent video games and a sealed copy of the first season of Gilmore Girls. This is a good place to treasure hunt, just not on Sundays, since you’ll find it closed.

Ah, Deseret Industries — or as we jack mormons call it — THE D I. It’s clean, they have nice hangers, the pricing is right. The women’s section is fair. I have had good luck finding shoes and purses here and the kid’s section seems great (I don’t have any kids, but if I did it seems like they have a huge selection). It is towards the top of my thrift store list in the area.

Dessert store??? Uh? Oh, D-E-S-E-R-E-T…dang it…
For a second hand store it’s not half bad. If you have issues with the Mormons, I mean, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-​day Saints, then you might want to go else where.
FYI, they are closed on Sundays, and you’ll know if the store is open or not, the white steel bar across the entrance to the parking lot makes a big dent in the hood of your car when you hit it.
