Shoreline Pool

Due to several near drowning incidents as a child, one of which involves wearing a star-​spangled bikini at age 8 and being rescued by a lifeguard with mustard breath, I’ve carried anxiety about submerging my head under water for purposes other than shampooing.
It is for this reason that my husband, who says he is only concerned about MY mental well-​bring, has signed us up for a 1-​week whiteWATER rafting trip on a real river that contains WATER. And, when I started fantasizing about building a pseudo water-​proof pope mobile to encase myself during the rafting trip, I realized I needed help. That’s when we found the Shoreline Pool.
Like many of us, my memories of community pools are dominated by screaming kids and elderly women doing slow-​movement water aerobics. Not so at the Shoreline Pool when we visited on a Thursday during the PUBLIC SWIM time from 11:30am to 1:00pm. The large pool was divided into two sides — the shallow side for kids and anxiety swimmers, like myself — and lanes for doing laps. The lanes are further divided into FAST, MODERATE and SLOW.
The shallow side has two ladders for entering the water, one of which is for the physically-​challenged (W-​I-​D-​E rubber-​grip and shallower steps allowing a more moderate entry into the water).
Kickboards and balls were available with the entrance fee and life jackets were within reach, but I was forbidden to use them, and was told that one is usually enough, even when I tried grabbing three. None are needed at the shallow end, which never goes deeper than 5 feet. After my husband regained consciousness and managed to loosen my death grip around his throat, I calmed down a bit and noticed that that the pool was virtually empty except for one or two lap swimmers on the deep end, and a pair of elderly ladies using the kickboards on the shallow side.
With all the space available I was able to practice and re-​gain my confidence and skills in the water, so that at the end of the session I was treading water like a barely-​afloat three-​legged dog with an inner ear infection and a nasty itch on its ass.
The pool is closely monitored by two lifeguards — one on each end of the pool. No matter how much of an idiot you might look while swimming — barking and whining — they don’t laugh at you. The facilities are clean and tidy and regularly monitored by the employees. The communal shower is large. There are 4 or 5 bathroom stalls and several change stalls. Lockers can be rented for 25 cents. There are dryers for your hair and even a soap dispenser in the shower stalls, but don’t rely on it if you really want to get clean.
Best part about the whole experience was that I not only overcame my fear of water, but look forward to the next public swim session. For $ 3.50 (drop in, non-​Shoreline resident fee) it’s a great way to spend a few hours.

I like doing laps here, my husband swims here with our son, and our son is in a swim class. Great business, good instructors/​lifeguards, very friendly.

Great pool — just went there today for the first time, and am planning to buy a 10-​punch pass.
Water was very clean and it wasn’t crowded at all.
