I absolutely love this store, it’s addicting. There are so many goodies from gardening to kitchen. I love their plants and pottery selections. They have their own greenhouse with a big selection of air plants. They have adorable and modern items that are hard to find anywhere else.

I unfortunately do not share the sentiment others have towards the revamp. I was happy for them to switch over and get a merchandise overhaul, but I was pretty disappointed with what I found. They removed a lot of the useful kitchen and gardening stuff, and substituted overpriced knickknacks. I LOVE knickknacks, but I am not going to pay the prices that this place marked them up to. The candles are nice, the ornaments are cute, but bottom line was just not there for me. I miss the Garden Room :(

I was a fan of the merchandise at the Garden Room(the previous incarnation of ModGen) but not of the surly, disinterested service. Happily, the refresh seems to have included the staff attitudes. We were checked on a few times as we browsed(in a friendly, non-pushy way) and the person who checked us out was very personable and helpful as well. The merchandise selection is definitely deeper, with less of a garden focus than in the past. There’s still the greenhouse and some garden tools but expect more kitchen, bar and cute home stuff. They’ve got nice candles, gift-y stuff, some fun local items and even a few candy treats. It’s like an upscale Sparrow Collective — think less knit hats and more cocktail stuff. I like. Prices seemed in line with quality and I managed to pick up a few Xmas gifts. Also, they are carrying the City Tins and still have some left — get ‘em while you can!

Honest truth — I would not have gone into this store except that it’s upstairs from a ramen place. SOLD. Especially with it being gift giving time. This place is filled with cute gifts for children and adults. We ended up buying a rocket ship tea ball, emoticandy, scrath paper for children, pens to tattoo your skin, math tattoos! Maybe you can get a better deal somewhere else on some things, but I definitely think it’s worth a look around. I’m sure you’ll find something awesome.

A MODern GENeral Store. This is the re-birth of the former Garden Room and it’s a pretty darn good one. There are still greenhouses and plants and gardening supplies, but now there’s so much more. Barware, bar gadgets, candles. home décor, kitchen tools, tea accessories, greeting cards and gift wrap fill the space. There’s something for everyone in every price range for sure. Speaking of prices, know your numbers to allow for comparison shopping. For example, Bittercube Bitters retail for $ 9 — $ 10 at most Milwaukee area outlets, but at MODGEN they are a whopping $ 14.50. But if it’s a unique gift, or a present for someone hard to shop for, you should have no challenges finding something here.
