You know, it’s sad how jaded we’ve become. I know we’re all busy and maybe a baseball game on a hot summer night no longer appeals to us a big family entertainment. I don’t know. All I know is, it’s sad to go to a game here locally and see that there’s maybe(maybe!) a few hundred people sitting in the stands. Baseball just ain’t what it used to be in the ‘Port City… True, these aren’t even close to the Captains of my youth, the then Texas League Double A affiliate of the San Fransisco Giants with names like Charlie Hayes, Rob Deere, Brett Butler, Mackey Sasser and Dee Dixon. Yes, those were the days my friends! The Captains built a new stadium in 1986 and called it Fair Grounds Field and my, oh my, what a big deal that was! Night in and night out they came by the thousands, thousands of people, paying customers, going through those turnstiles. Thousands! That’s butts in seats, people! Those Captains were bought out by Mandalay Entertainment and re-named the(gag) Swamp Dragons in 2000, eventually even they pickled up sticks and moved to Frisco, Texas. The next year we got a new team playing in the most minor of minor leagues with no major league affiliations, the Shreveport Sports, borrowing a name from a Shreveport baseball team in the mid-20th Century. Still, interest continued to wane. A few years ago, they got the Captains moniker back and changed the logo and the team colors to something all new, but with still no major league affiliation. It just feels like Swamp Dragons 2-Electric Boogaloo. But I still love ‘em, just like I still love Heidi Montag through all those horrid plastic surgeries and bad marriages. My point is this, we need to support this last sports team that we have, or it will go bye-bye as well! I went to the game last night(Thursday), it was Thirsty Thursday!(16 oz. canned domestic beers-your choice, $ 2!) And the crowd was okay by today’s lowered standards, but it could still have been better. The Captains are the 2010 Champions of their league! Admission is only five dollars! $ 5.00! That’s cheaper than a movie or a fast food meal! Okay, so it might be a tad warm out there at night. Dress comfortably! Wear loose clothing that also breathes! Hydrate beforehand and while you’re there! It’s really not that bad out there! When was the last time that you went to a Shreveport baseball game… Exactly! Go support your team! Eat a hot dog! Drink a beer! Eat soft serve ice cream out of a tiny plastic baseball helmet… The great thing about baseball is it’s a talky sport. You can talk to whomever you’re with about anything while watching a game. Fill the air with your thoughts, just fill the seats with your butts! Go Captains!
