Montgomery Recreation Center. Government Management at its most exemplary! It is a privilege living in the high priced Montgomery County. This is because we have excellent tax-contributed(ie…paid by working people) government programs. So we thought. We signed up our kid for one of the kids program with the online Montgomery Country Recreation Centers. So far so good. We were very PROMPTLY charged the amount. So far so good. There was going to be an additional charge on the first day for uniforms. So far so good. On the date of the first class, my wife and I arranged to be off from work to bring our kid to the first class and witness for ourselves what an amazing government-run organization we have here in Montgomery County, one of the best in the country, for sure!!! So we thought. We arrived. There were no less than 3 people at the front desk. None of them knew anything about the class. It’s like we were speaking college level LATIN to them. They had never heard of the class. Best of all, they had no way of solving the mystery for themselves. Luckily, there was this really thick fancy catalog from the, what do you know… the Montgomery Recreation Center programs. So, I flipped to the page and showed them the class and date and time. Written in plain English. Not a single Latin phrase in there. Clear as day. Still… all we heard were crickets. Trying to help our Montgomery Country officials out, we suggested maybe they could call the main office. After some significant struggles, the phone call was made. We were informed that the class was cancelled due to «low enrollment». We then asked whey they didn’t send out the notification and why our money was not PROMPTLY refunded in the same manner that it was PROMPTLY charged? Crickets again. After getting home with a disappointed child, we got an email stating that the class was cancelled due to «instructor cancelling». Either case, it was an email sent post-facto…(yes, THAT’s Latin), sounding like finger pointing at the instructor, instead of addressing the problems of BADMANAGEMENT.

I signed up online for a yoga class at the East County Recreation Center on August 29 and paid the fee of $ 60, which was promptly billed to my credit card. The six-week class was supposed to start on September 10 at 7 p.m. I bought a yoga mat and clothing in preparation for the class. Lo and behold, when I rushed home from work and got to the center at 6:50 p.m. on September 10, ready to start my class, I was told that the class was cancelled. No notification, no warning despite having my email address! Needless to say, this is the first and last time I will be registering for a class with the Montgomery County Recreation program. My only hope is that I can get a refund in a manner as prompt as my credit card was billed for the cancelled class!
