This is a place that you need to know about that you never thought you might need to know about, that you may want to bookmark just in case. We moved into our new place and less than a month later, the basement flooded. Yeah, they didn’t tell us that it has happened before. My entire book collection was down there, half of which ended up ruined. Ya know, stuff is stuff, but there was one book that got wet that’s priceless to me, huge sentimental value and as it turns out, has a potentially large monetary value. Well, not so large anymore I suppose. I made some phone calls amidst the tears and was directed to Midwest Freeze Dry. They were about to close but so kindly waited for me to rush my book up there. They said call us in 10 days, which I did and the book was ready. Now, I don’t thoroughly understand everything that they did except that they put the book through several processes including freeze drying to dry the book and prevent mold growth. When I first got the estimate, it was about $ 30. When I called, the woman who answered said it would be $ 58. I was a bit dismayed but, it’s a small price to pay to salvage this book. And too, the landlords are paying so, eh, whatever. I called back to double check the total so I could write a check and spoke to Rory who informed me that he wasn’t going to charge me. In the grand scheme of things, it was only one book(they usually deal with square footages apparently), he understood the sentimental value of it and felt badly that it got damaged. I was blown away, almost in tears again. I went to pick it up and Rory so kindly explained what to do next, which mainly consists of putting a lot of weight on the book for, well, nearly ever. There isn’t anything else that can reasonably be done he said. I understand. If only my severely broken heart could be mended. Anyway, long story short, visit their website. It can be a tad confusing to a lay-person, such as myself. They do very smart things to save and protect books that get wet. It’s not terribly expensive, they are very nice and in the end, it’s a very good place to be aware of.
