One of the best tap houses I have been to! Not only is the beer phenomenal, the bartenders are super friendly and the owner took us on a mini tour. What they have built in two years is amazing. Y’all need to make a trip out there, it’s not a bad drive from Durham and probably 30 minutes from Raleigh. Great way to kick off our New Years Eve

The brewery tour was great! I’ve been on quite a few around the U.S. and this one was one of my favorites. Very informational and had a personal touch that makes you feel welcomed. We tried both the Malt and Hop Flights. Happy we did! There were good and great beers in each. I was personally pleasantly surprised at how drinkable the IPAs were for me because I’m not normally a huge fan.

Great brewery– only open 2 years and they’ve actually been on the Simpsons twice –! Mightily impressed how quickly they’ve built a brand for themselves and increased their distribution across NC. But that’s not surprising once you visit their brewery. Their selection of beer is incredibly impressive and varied. So great! I love their beers! Particular favorites include: the seasonal Gourd Rocker Imperial Pumpkin Porter(and I never like pumpkin beers or porters)… their Sexy Rexy Red Rye, and their Wilma’s Wandering EyeIPA… which has 12.2ABV yikes— but it’s a solid brew. Atmosphere is fantastic, and the staff is super friendly! Jen is great!

A Johnston County gem! This brewery doesn’t need food trucks because they have there own bar food menu complete anytime they are opened! We have had their guacamole and sandwiches and all have been delicious. The bartenders are always friendly and help you with suggesting beer, let you try samples, and make sure you glass does not go empty. the ambiance is nice for a brewery too, its rustic meats a lil modern for the tasting room. We always stop when we drive by! I hope you do too!

My husband and I recently moved to Clayton(almost Wilson’s Mills) and we were so thrilled to find that we live only 6 minutes away from this place. We went there tonight for the first time, and it far exceeded our expectations. We already knew the beer was amazing(the Steak Cake Stout is my favorite), but along with the super neat tasting room and the awesome staff, Double Barley has officially taken the top spot in my book for the best brewery in NC. We will be back!

Really excellent brewery, and a terrific place to spend an evening inside or out. The seating area inside is very nice, but outside is where it’s at with a very convivial, family-style environment. People with kids, people with dogs, the last time I went there were no less than 3 of us with babies. The staff is nice and super helpful, not snobby about beers at all. Start with a sampler. My absolute favorite is the Wilma’s Wandering EyePA. Fantastic double IPA, really good and complex and smooth. And I’m not even a huge IPA fan. The Thrilla N Vanilla Porter is probably the most popular, and it’s easy to see why, it’s just sweet enough and easily drinkable. Mixed with the SteakCake Stout, it’s perfect dessert(a «vanilla cake» if you’re familiar with the brewery). Even better if they have their coffee Thrilla on tap, then it’s like drinking a mocha. They brew a little of everything, and it’s all good. So bring your friends, because there will be something for everyone here, not just a lot of one style. There is a food truck some evenings, but being in a more rural location, you aren’t usually going to see the variety of what you get in Raleigh or Durham, but they also have a small menu of terrific craft bar food as well, so you won’t go hungry. The owners could not be nicer, more hard-working people, and it’s really good to see Johnston County’s first craft brewery thrive. I’m lucky that it’s only about 15 minutes away, but it’s definitely worth a drive if you are further out.

This place is worth the drive. The beers are amazing, the taproom is super nice, the snacks they offer are tasty and the outdoor seating area is cute. We split flights and tried all of the beers they had on tap(downside — the ABV is high in a lot of the beers so you can’t have too many unless you are not driving). The Gourd Rocker Imperial Porter is by far my favorite beer that they offer. I also enjoy Thrilla in Vanilla and Richard’s Black Eyepa. Double Barley makes me Hoppy, Hoppy, Hoppy!

So I’d give it 3 ½ if it was allowed. They have either sweet or hoppy beers — but all are enjoyable. The people are friendly the atmosphere is great and they offer good food trucks.

Love what this brewery has to offer. Flights in Hops or Malt options. But what really made our visit was the hospitality, we truly felt welcome. Customized my flight, but even more tastes kept coming. Wish I lived nearby. Regardless of your taste, there’s a quality brew for you.

We made it out to Double Barley Brewing over the weekend and I must say, Johnston County Breweries(Deep River being the other) continue to impress me. The only downside, in my mind, is the distance from our house — as we live close to downtown Raleigh. Other than that, all I can say are good things. From the outside seating area(with really nice lighting at night), to the friendly service, the yummy small plates and some great beer — thumbs up DBB. As far as dark beers go, they are doing really well in my book. I enjoyed the Thrilla in Vanilla and Sparrky’s. I had small glasses of each. My husband enjoyed Sparrky’s so much, he purchased a bottle to take home with us. When we arrived, I was hungry. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a small food menu. After speaking with one of the really friendly bartenders, she recommended the Bruschetta flatbread pizza and the special of the day — the tacos. We ordered both entrees and were not disappointed. Pizza wise, the balsamic glaze was great. As we were enjoying the tacos, another patron at the bar asked us our opinion. We said that we were enjoying them and he was thankful to hear that. You see, the beef used to make the tacos came from his cattle — which he feeds with left over grain from the brewing process at DBB and other local breweries — you can also buy his beef jerkey at DBB too. Note that the food offerings are delicious but, they are small plates — so if you are hungry — order two for yourself. We definitely left DBB satisfied and happy that we made the trip out. We will definitely be back. Can’t say enough for the great service by the bartenders too.

Such a tragedy occurred today, with the realization that we only live about 25 minutes away and this was the first time visiting Double Barley Brewing. The beer that they have is amazing. I have always loved the Thrilla in Vanilla. I was so excited to see that they had bottles for sale and immediately requested the last 2 bottles available that they had left. They had a couple of beers on tap, we had the Revelation and Abby’s Amber Ale. They were on the lower end(for Double Barley Brewing) ABV, 6%, and were very refreshing. They also allowed tasting for all beers on tap, and mixing of the beers. I really liked the Gourd Rocker with Thrilla in Vanilla combination. Be warned though, all their beers are fairly high ABV, so if you are a lightweight, make sure you take it easy, this also means you get a lot of bang for the buck :). After our beers(and some guacamole), we started chatting with Cheryl, the owner. She offered to give us a tour We met the family and a friends of the family who were brewing a special beer for the 1 year anniversary next month. Everyone was really nice and you can tell that they really care about their craft. We also met the owners of a new brewery called Brice’s Brewing Company in Benson, Kris and Dana, who let us taste some of their beers. We definitely will make the drive again to get these awesome beers, along with our growlers in tow. If you enjoy tasty beers I highly recommend visiting this brewery

I already drive about five hours to come visit some friends in Smithfield, and now I will be driving about five hours to visit this brewery again. I came here with some of my lady and best friends to check it out, and I can’t wait to come back. I had to try all of the beer here, and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every one of them. The one that stood out to me in particular is the Wilma’s Wandering EyePA. This Imperial IPA comes in at a hefty 12.2% and 93 ibu’s, so I was expecting to get kicked in the teeth with hops, however it was extremely drinkable! I love how a little bit of honey goes a long way in a beer. The hops were very subtle considering what we were drinking. I had to take a growler back to Charleston SC to share with my other beer enthusiasts. Another treat was the Steak Cake Stout and the Thrilla in Vanilla Porter. Both are delicious, but try getting the Malted Flight, drink only half of the Steak Cake and Thrilla in Vanilla, and combine the two for a Vanilla Cake. This makes a delicious blend! I can’t wait to come back up in September for the Food Truck Rally I heard about. Also, corn hole out back. ‘Nuff said.

This place is well worth the drive. I was excited to travel to Smithfield to experience the beer I tried a Unilocal!event in all of it’s glory. Not only is this the brewing site, but there is an amazing tasting room. Driving up to this warehouse you will find two parking lots. There is a fenced outdoor beer garden clad with wooden chairs and as a table there are large re purposed cable spools. Sustainability and beer are like cousins! When you walk in the door you are greeted by warm professional staff and great atmosphere. There are multiple high top tables, a gathering table, a more casual seating area and a spacious bar. There serve savory snacks such as a meat and cheese plate, guacamole and chips, and a pimento cheese plate. These treats go great with any of the craft beer offerings. My personal favorites are the Steak Cake Stout or the Mind Blower Porter. They also have some logo gear for those who like to support their favorite craft beer and proudly advertise their crafty side.

Love the Thrilla n vanilla and hub likes the steak cake stout. Was disappointed they were out of the strawberry wheat :(and another which was my 2nd choice. However the bartender offered me samples of 3 others and I ended up drinking the brown nosin ’ IBA. Really liked it. We ordered the chips and guacamole and enjoyed that as well. Took home a growler of our favorite Thrilla n vanilla.

We really enjoyed the beer from Double Barley at the Unilocaler party back in June, so when I was out of town my husband paid them a visit. He loved it so much that he recommended that be the beer we ordered for our upcoming housewarming party. The owners were more than generous. We ordered two sixtels(sixth barrels of beer) and they rented us out their jockey box and tap handles, so it could feel like a bar in our backyard! The beer was extremely well received at the party. Then it came time to return everything. We made the drive out to Smithfield on a Thursday night. It is a little far from our home in Durham, but a fairly easy drive, and well worth it. Everyone there was unbelievably friendly, and the bar tenders/wait staff really make you feel at home. They had a menu of a few small plates(to which we ordered several of) and a couple of daily specials. All of the beers in my flight were delicious, and I enjoyed a delicious bratwurst to go with it. Would definitely visit again when we are in the mood for a drive!

Probably the best brewery experience I’ve had in a long, long time!!! Beers were really good across the board, tap room was small, quant and really cool. The best aspect of the visit… out bartender. I hate that I didn’t find out her name… but she was super nice, attentive as heck, very knowledgable, and super professional. Didn’t try to flirt or act unintelligent… just gave great service!!! I’ll likely be back many times!!!

Ahhh, finally! On an unexpected brewery tour that Sara and I set out on, we made our way down to Smithfield to Double Barley Brewing. After tasting their IPA and Thrilla in Vanilla Porter at the Unilocal Passport to City Market(and porter at Craft Public House), I moved DB up on my to-do list. It’s quite a drive from Raleigh(maybe 35 minutes or so), but it was so worth it! Google maps led me through some tiny little town, but you can get there on a straight shot down 70E. The brewery is in a big green warehouse building right off 70E just a bit past the 70E Business bypass toward Clayton. They have ample parking as well as a nice beer garden patio with cozy chairs & upcycled tables. The tap room is nicely decorated with trendy/upscale décor– one of the best I’ve seen in the Triangle area! I really liked it. They also had a screen that they probably show games or movies on too. Oh, they also have some food! We ordered the meat & cheese plate, which included several crackers along with summer sausage, proscuitto, brie cheese with fig spread, mustard spread, and white cheddar cheese. It was a great assortment for $ 10 and made the beer sampling even better. The beers won’t disappoint, that’s for sure. The Thrilla in Vanilla porter is quite sweet & vanilla-y(as the name implies), but the Steak Cake Stout definitely takes the cake(see what I did there?). It was one of the most well crafted stouts I’ve had in the area. I also got the Brown Nosin IBA, which is a brown IPA with a very well balanced hop profile… so good. Sara loved their Abby’s Amber ale too. I also tasted the Wilma’s Wondering EyePA– an imperial IPA with great hops and too well hidden alcohol. All in all, if this brewery would move a little closer to Raleigh, I’d be there ALL the time… it’s by far one of my favorites in the Triangle, and I plan to visit again very very soon :)

One of the newest additions to the Triangle brewery scene Double Barley opened their doors a few weeks ago. They did not disappoint. I was invited to Double Barley for an engagement party this past weekend. The owners are a very friendly couple who took their love of home-brewing and built their dream. The space is fantastic a large outdoor deck with plenty of space to sit outside and drink a few brewskies. Plus there is a decent size bar inside with tables as well. They have a very large space for all their brewing needs. I highly recommend taking the tour so you can learn all about their brews. I tried everything they had on tap the Thrilla Vanilla Porter, Pale Ale, Amber Ale, and Steak Cake Stout. The bartender recommended I mix the porter and stout together not a bad idea at all this made a really good beer mix. Overall my favorite beer was the stout it wasn’t heavy and thick like other stouts I’ve tried it was just delicious. We also got a sneak peak of their pumpkin beer that will be tapped on Halloween. I’m a lover of all things pumpkin, and pumpkin beer just happens to be something I look forward to each year. If you don’t live in Clayton or out that way this can seem like the middle of nowhere but I’m telling you it’s well worth the drive wherever you live. It took us about 30min from NC State area of Raleigh. They don’t have any food but I’m sure you can bring it what you would like. This is a great space to hold and event or party. Come on out and support your local breweries! Take home a growler why your at it.

Just to let everyone know, Tyler’s Restaurant and Taproom in Durham now has several Double Barley Brewing beers on Tap. Tylers in Raleigh and Apex now have the Thrilla in Vanilla Porter on tap and Skylines Café, Cleveland Draft House and Brewmasters do as well! Check it out!
