James F nailed this one. I’ve come here through out my childhood and it’s a really nice place to come for on of their events. Or if you want to feel really tall.

If you’re like me, every time you drive down 295 you see a sign for the«Smith-Appleby House» on the highway, but you haven’t ever given it much thought. Today i finally had the chance to visit the house, as they were holding their first annual«Living History Weekend.» The events taking place were interesting — they had artillery and infantry reenactors performing maneuvers and generally making lots of noise and smoke. But these are not usual features of the house, just a special event, and are not included in the rating. The house itself is something of a «mish-mash»(that’s a good thing) of various different eras, as it was first built as a one-room and then added onto as the family expanded. It’s been fairly well cared for, considering what i’m sure are the limited means of the local historical society. It features many authentic artifacts and most can be touched. Certainly worth a bit of time for a visit on an afternoon if you find local history interesting.
