I went to Smithfield Pediatrics the other day with my son for an appointment because of weight issues. He has gone there his whole life, but this was one of the first times I was able to go(his appointments are usually scheduled while at work). I have to say that I was stunned at how seriously they do not take childhood obesity. My kid is a wonderful kid and loves to be active. But, he only gets to be active when he is with me on the weekends. I went to the doctors to get support on the issue, not for them to say that his BMI went down .1 since his physical(which mathematically could be attributed to being active all weekend). To me, there should be a red flag to doctors when a child is in the 99th percentile and there is a history in the family of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Sure they put in for blood work. But, that was after me being stern with them and not the other way around. I am going to wait for the bloodwork to come in and then schedule an appointment with a doctor who is more pro-active and supportive than lackadaisical.
