Boats dams and ice The real name of Stump Pond is the Woonasquatucket reservoir but it’s easy to see why it’s usually just called Stump Pond. Some people also call it Stillwater Reservoir and everything in Rhode Island seems to have at least three different names. Whatever you want to call it the pond is lovely, especially in the winter. Lots of people fish here all year long and ice fishing is very popular. There is a decent size parking lot that holds a couple of dozen cars. A small boat ramp for hand carried boats only is a short distance from the parking lot and you can kayak or canoe into and down the Woonasquaucket River from the reservoir if you are willing to portage around a couple of dams. Not a lot of houses around the pond and the scenery is pretty nice, especially when there is a mist over the pond. Plenty of fish in the water and lots of beavers, deer, rabbits and large aquatic birds can be seen making nests in the spring or going about their lives. A quiet and peaceful place that is a lovely area to spend some time on the water. The pond is large enough to get a bit feisty in really windy weather and some care has to be taken not to go over a dam but it is a safe and cool place for the whole family to enjoy the water or do some fishing.
