Great little winery. Stopped here after hiking near by and the owners were very hospitable. The wine and the views were spectacular.

What a delightful late-afternoon visit today with friends. This is a lovely, growing winery, easy to find and not for those with low-slung fancy cars! Are we there yet? – thought going up the driveway. The generous tastings of 5 for $ 5 easily pushed me to take home 4 bottles. There was a great standing bass and guitar duo playing – «Strung Tight” – super fun. Very relaxed, very comfy. Good things coming from this little place.

I used to have to go to VA for wineries. I have been visiting Boonsboro for 30 years and was unaware of this hidden gem until last winter! I have gone twice now and feel like Red Heifer is a friendly community-oriented winery that welcomes you with open arms. The owners are a lovely couple, and the wine is delicious. I can’t wait to watch this winery grow. No need for VA wine anymore. Drink local!

Nice wines, beautiful setting. We enjoyed a glass outdoors at one of the many tables. We took a bottle of the Red Heifer Red home with us. The owner is very knowledgeable and friendly. They are expanding so that has to be a good sign, right? The driveway is long, steep, windy, and rocky. Not sure what they can do about that.

My first Unilocal review! I was finally compelled to actually join(and not just read others reviews) after visiting this winery. My husband and I visited after staying at a bed and breakfast close by and doing some shopping at the outlet malls. The owners are AWESOME. It’s great to hear their story about how they got into the business, how they are expanding, and about the wine industry in general. The view and location are great. We also enjoyed the sweet wines and red wines. We may have enjoyed the whites as well excepted we had breakfast and brushed our teeth prior to arrival and really couldn’t taste them very well. Unfortunately, they could not offer food(crackers or cheese) due to coding restraints. Besides that small caveat, I highly recommend visiting them.

Stopped by yesterday on our return trip to Amish wood mill. Good size portions and reasonable price for the wine tasting, unlike some other wineries. You could really taste the wines with more than 1 sip. All of their wines were good and we left with a couple bottles. Are definitely adding this to our vineyard/winery repertoire!

Who would think that a vineyard could survive never mind thrive one of the highest hills in the area. It is high, I hike up the dang thing on the Appalachian trial! You turn off Raven Rock Road onto a gravel track that heads up, up & up! You pass mountain goats that are gasping for breath such is the climb. The goats are cute though, so I stopped to talk to them in goat. My wife found this amusing. Little did she know that they were my goat spy friends passing secrets about the wines she was soon to taste. Red Heffer is a small place, tiny even. Might fit twelve people in the tasting room is they were all greased up with goose fat. The goose fat will also insolate against the old winds that buffet this amazing vineyard on the top of a mountain. Don’t let the fact that this place is out there in the sticks put you off! The owners are great company. The husband/wine maker also kept me up to date with my friend the local bear.(I met the bear on a hiking trip, he stared at me whilst I soiled myself. The presence of being in the company of one of Americas greatest animals being too much for me. More so as he jumped out in front of me, 20 yards down the trail) but I digress… The wines are some of the best my wife has tasted, the presentation was great. I mean in most wineries you do not talk to the owners never mind the wine makers themselves! And when you do it is rarely of wine of this quality. Truly a must visit if you are in the area. Though I do insist that you talk to the goats, they provide the best gossip.

Very beautiful setting and delicious wines. No cheese or other food, and only portapotties, but if that doesn’t bother you this then you will have a good time.

Had a wonderful visit at Red Heifer Winery today. The wine was delicious, and the staff pleasant, friendly, and knowledgable. The driveway up to the winery is a bit long and steep, so be prepared. The trip is well worth it!

I was particularly impressed with the fact that we drove 2 hours to visit wineries in western Maryland, and when we called to make sure they were open, they helped us, even though they’d debated closing for mildly inclement weather. Extremely friendly and accommodating couple. Ended up leaving with 6 bottles, one of which I made into a wonderful mulled wine which I am enjoying as we speak. Having only been in business for about a year, I really want to see what new wines they expand with, and look forward to going back again or seeing them at the MD wine festival.

Made an impromptu stop at Red Heifer Winery after a Sunday Funday shopping antiques and miscellaneous in the Hagerstown area. Yes, Red Heifer is a little out there. NO, you will not be disappointed if you go. The grounds are gorgeous, our trip was in March I want to say and snow was actually falling the Smithsburg area adding to the beauty of it all. The ‘staff’ who seem to be the Husband/Wife owner/operator team were great. Such a fun visit great wines. We tasted four that they had to offer and ended up purchasing the Blueberry and Catawba. Both are very very good. The blueberry was my favorite and I feel I have been craving it ever since. Many Maryland wineries/vineyards offer fruit wines but this honestly was unlike anything else I had tried. It was not syrupy or too sweet but very refreshing. We ‘ran’ into Red Heifer since at another wine event and I think I kick myself on a fairly frequent occurrence for only buying the glass of the blueberry wine and not 123 bottles. I have researched on their site that they do sell wines at a couple stores in the Hagerstown area and they are served at some restaurants in the area as well. Just hoping they spread out to my Walkersville/Frederick neck of the woods! I guess all that does is give me an excuse to pack a picnic and head back up. The burdens we must bear…

Wonderful experience. A legacy spanning 7 decades, 4 generations, and 100 acres with one red heifer thrown in as part of the deal certainly has been smiled upon by the wine gods. Do yourself a favor — venture out into the scenic MD countryside, find the wine pioneer in you and make the trek up the long and winding drive through the charmingly unassuming farm, and stumble upon the diamond-in-the-rough that is the beautifully converted stone barn of Red Heifer Winery. Pack a picnic and your palette for good wine! The assortment is not overbearing; one each red and white dry, one off-dry, and 3 sweet on the day of our visit — and all of them perfect examples of how to grow and produce wine along the East coast. We were greeted warmly by the winemaker’s lovely Mom and Grandmother, as he and his wife were away at an event for the day. Friendly conversation punctuated our visit nicely, as our«girl’s day out» group took in the scenery and its fruits. Cozy tasting room, but the patio right outside the door is expansive. We were a group of 7, and there was still room for more however. Having only opened officially early last fall, the service, facility, and product has just the right balance of stellar customer service already. Perhaps it is the good luck charm of its namesake. Go, you must. I recommend everything! $ 5 gives you 5 tastes. Also members of the Antietam Highlands Wine Trail! From their website, they host dinners, music, and events on site! All the more better reason to check it out. :)
