I don’t get all the hype. Ate there in the summer didn’t think it was all that great. I think everyone likes it because it’s one of the only BBQ spots.

Back Bay BBQ is the kind of spot I look for in South Jersey: family-run, no frills, a salty sea breeze, and simple and delicious food. Don’t bother if you’re not okay with plastic utensils and paper towels on the table. BBBBQ feels like a take-out place where you’re welcome to sit and eat for a while if you’re not in a hurry. If you do stop by, we’d recommend the ribs, brisket, jerked chix, and mac n’ cheese. The«spicy» BBQ could use some kick, but was still flavorful and a savory addition to all of the above. Last but not least, don’t forget to BYOB.

I’ve driven by this place a dozen times make that 1000 times finally ventured in last night. I did not order anything. I looked at the menu everything is all a cart there were three young girls behind the counter dressed scantily that were not welcoming whatsoever. The one girl on the right produced a burnt to hell rack of rubs and had to ask the other if it was set able then trashed it. More kids in the back kitchen area. Must be a tourist trap I just walked out.

Drove by and smelled it before I saw it, past it and turned around. I’ve been by here before and never noticed it, was hungry and had to eat. I ordered a half rack of ribs and coconut shrimp and my wife had the chicken. All were fantastic! The service was great and the prices were reasonable. I will definitely be back again… Soon!

we stopped here for dinner and were extremely happy. My husband had a full rack of ribs and coconut shrimp. I had the pulled pork sandwich on a Kaiser roll and my son had a cheeseburger. we also had a sampling of their macaroni and cheese, cowboy baked beans, coleslaw and corn on the cob. Dessert was pecan pie and whiskey cake both topped with fresh whipped cream. The ribs were falling off the bone. My sandwich was amazing — best sauce ever… and my sons hamburger was cooked to order and tasted great. All of the sites, especially the baked beans and coleslaw were fantastic. The desserts were delicious. Prices were fair and the service was impeccable. This is a must go.

Food was decent but extremely overpriced. Three of us went and ended up ordering coconut shrimp… because they were out of both pastrami and flounder. For nine dollars each, one of us got 7 shrimp, one got 6, and my basket contained 5. Go figure… We even had to ask for the mango chutney that accompanies this dish, as the cook did not include it as it should have been. All side dishes were @ 2 – 4 dollars. Our meals consisting of(an average of) 6 shrimp and a side of onion rings were $ 13.00 each. One of our party ordered a sampler to take to her son and our waitress brought out two boxes. At $ 20.00 each, that sure jacked up the bill. Our flustered young waitress was new on the job and offered to not charge my friend for her error, but she declined. When we got home and started reading other Unilocal reviews, we found one which commented on the poor attitude and behavior on the part of the owner of this establishment… and have concluded that our waitress must have been afraid of the consequences of making a mistake! The final surprises on this adventure were: 1) finding out that they won’t do separate checks, and 2) opening the folder containing the check and seeing an index card with these two words: CASHONLY. Although we visit Ocean City each summer, we will not be visiting Back Bay BBQ ever again! Update: came back and added another star because my friend went back and had a chat with one of the owners, who was apologetic and refunded cost of all meals.

If I were to rate this on smell alone I would give this 5 stars, but don’t be fooled by that. The chicken was too dry, the ribs were over cooked had had an unusual flavor. Too fragrant of an herb or spice, I think nutmeg, cardamom etc. Coleslaw was good. They need to keep trying. Great location, just need to work on food flavors and cooking time.

We have gone here several times. The food is average. However, it is the attitude of the woman who owns the restaurant which makes this place poor. She was extremely mean to her staff, and to customers. She was making rude comments about customers and rushing service. If someone can’t at least be a decent human being… They should never run a restaurant!!! Will NEVER go back!!! And hope that sometime that woman can find peace and treat others the way she would like to be treated!!!

Five stars for takeout The chicken is fabulous, big meaty smoky Perdue chickens. Great value for price. We always get extra for leftovers. Great ribs also if they have them well done. Very friendly young local kids behind the counter, tip them well. Very casual dining areas This place is like something you would find in coastal carolinas.

I have driven by this place countless times-smelling that wonderful BBQ aroma –but never remembered it when it came time to eat. Until this last weekend. … Went a little overboard… BBQ chicken, brisket, smoked wings, seafood kabob, Mac & cheese, cowboy beans, coke slaw, corn bread, potato salad.(it wasn’t all for me, lol) The BBQ-just as fabulous as the aroma. Moist, perfectly seasoned. The kabob was small for the price but delicious. The brisket had one of the hardest critics I know try it and he LOVED it. The chicken portions were HUGE! Moist, perfectly barbecued. The wings were the big ones, I prefer the drumettes(?), but these were meaty and again, perfectly seasoned The Mac & cheese needed more flavor and cheese for our liking and the cornbread a little dry. But the cowboy beans– OMG– loved them. And the cole slaw and potato salad were also winners. Definitely will become a regular

This is excellent barbecue. I am an Alabama boy, and that isn’t a compliment we go around handing out. Half rack of ribs, beef brisket, old bay fries, Mac and cheese, and cowboy beans… the spicy barbecue sauce is the best.

Had the BBQ sampler. All of their meat is delicious. If I were you I would ask for the BBQ sauce in the side of anything. Te sauce was sweeter than any sauce I’ve ever had. Still can’t figure out if I liked it or not. The sides were ok. Beans, cole slaw, and potato salad each lacked a bit of taste but it was now to see they were all fresh.

Had a great meal. This is roadside BBQ, not cloth napkin BBQ. That’s part of the charm. You can smell the smoke which is great. My favorite is the pastrami, got it last summer, hope they still have it. Just remember, it’s not fancy, just real BBQ.

We discovered this place on our way back home from the Longport dog beach. We were looking for a place where we could sit outside with my dog, and it turned out the restaurant is dog-friendly. We had a seat at a table on the cute patio, and after a little confusion about the menu, I ordered the fried shrimp with corn on the cob and corn bread, and my mom got the shrimp skewer, also with corn & corn bread. We split an order of the cowboy beans. My shrimp was excellent, and she said hers was fresh & cooked well, although she wasn’t crazy about the spices they’d put on it. The corn was great; they obviously used fresh local corn, and the cornbread was tasty and apparently homemade, as it stated on the menu. I didn’t love whatever spices they used in the beans, but they were still good and had a huge hunk of pork in them. The server also brought us a complimentary sampler of desserts they were trying out(whiskey cake, brownie, and chocolate chip cookie). All three were good, although we both agreed the whiskey cake was the best, really moist and delicious. The prices to me seemed almost ridiciously low, but I’m accustomed to Center City prices. I wish I lived closer to this place — with great food and reasonable prices(and dog-friendly to boot!), I’d come here every week if I could. I plan to come back many times over the summer and can’t wait to try the barbecue next time.

slid by here yesterday totally by accident while on our way to a seafood restaurant which ended up being totally packed. when we walked in the place was pretty empty. i believe there was just one couple dining at the time. we were quickly greeted by the staff and told to seat ourselves wherever we wanted. we initially decided to sit outside but the tables are located directly under trees which to us was a no-no considering that birds often hang out in trees. also, the outdoor chairs werent comfortable at all, so we decided to dine inside. interior décor is plain at best. super plain. the server, rachael immediately came over and took our orders and the food was served in less than 5 mins. im assuming bcuz they have so much of it prepared already. we had pulled pork, jerk chicken, mac n cheese, and corn on the cob. everything was good. my only gripe with the food was that the pulled pork and jerk chicken was served on a bun which was complete mush on the bottom. it could not be picked up to eat like a sandwich. so if u order these items get them without the bread unless u like mush. with all that we ordered the bill only came to $ 37 for three people which was extremely reasonable. even gave rachael a $ 10 tip. i’d recommend this place for a fast cheap and tasty meal. its not a pretty place to dine but so what. it was clean fast and friendly.

Cheap and delicious: back bay BBQ’s food is up to nyc BBQ standards. The brisket is comparable to hill country. The pulled pork and sides were excellent. From a pure food quality standpoint it is the best place at the shore. Prices were super reasonable. Very casual: The setting is nice, but presentation and ambiance are basic even by BBQ standards. Food delivery in Tupperware containers is a little bit odd.

Soggy over sweet pork that had the texture of what I assume a wet mop would tase like. Had an off putting extra spice like cinnimon or nut meg that should be in an apple pie not bar-b-que — We also saw the owner being not too nice to a customer that had a complaint about the food. The sandwich I got was huge and would have been woth the 7 bucks if it had been tasty — Hell it would have been worth the 7 bucks if it had just not tasted bad. Neither I nor my date finished our sandwiches

The best part about Back Bay is the seating. It’s right off the bay and pretty secluded so it’s a very pretty place to sit. Okay, you need to ignore the traffic behind you, but really, it’s not bad. Our waitress was… friendly. She wore shorts and a tshirt each about 2 sizes too small and had her belly hanging out. Although she was nice, she didn’t give me the best first impression of the place. She kept telling us what she likes and why she likes it as well as how she would«hook us up» on our order. We got pulled pork, ribs, and the brisket to share, as well as the cole slaw. I kept reading reviews on here that the cole slaw was something great, but I found it to be pretty average. The pork was my favorite and I liked the charcoal taste in the ribs. They also have their own bbq sauce. It’s very sweet and thick. I think this is where Back Bay was lacking. If they had a bigger selection of bbq sauce I’d be tempted to go back. Because of this, I’d recommend ordering, picking it up, and eating at home with your own favorite sauce.

Absolutely the best BBQ north of Mason-Dixon line. All of the food is authentic smoked BBQ. Simple delivery in styrofoam dishes. Must try the coconut shrimp! And don’t forget to get some sides. Mac and Cheese, Cowboy beans and Cole Slaw were all excellent! Loved eating outside and enjoying the sunset over the marsh. The best part is it’s dirt cheap!
