My experience: 2 days before Thanksgiving, when this college town is turned upside down with everyone closing up shop and traveling/​preparing for turkey day, I am pressed to submit photos of my hand hooked wool rug featuring a skyline of Boston to Rug Hooking Magazine for consideration of an award. Very strict submission requirements regarding the type of photo, layout, etc — the cell phone camera will not do. I make a couple of calls around to photographers who do this sort of thing — dead end! panic! everything shutting down for the holiday.
Then good fortune brings me to David Barnes. I phone him, acknowledging that he appears to be an event photographer but ask if there is any way… with ridiculously short notice… and unusual graphic requirements…? He hesitates for a beat, but says yes. And from there on, he bends over backwards to make it work, turning his studio upside down for special lighting and camera angles, cantilever extended tripod, etc. He asks me to stay for the shoot so he can preview every shot with me to be certain that my design intentions are best represented to viewers.
By the end of that same Wednesday before Thanksgiving, in my email inbox there are delivered PERFECT shots that exceed specifications of the magazine (and my own expectations). I shouldn’t be surprised, as I learned that he does indeed shoot art works, although usually in the artists’ studios, so my kind of fussiness is not new to him. He did me, a stranger, a great favor that will not be forgotten.
I’m certain that my job was no small inconvenience; and he certainly had me against a wall in terms of negotiation the price and work. Yet the price was incredibly reasonable even before considering the short deadline and impending holiday. He could not have been more thoughtful, responsive to my input, flexible, and professional. I was deeply impressed, and can recommend him without reservation.
