So sad to see the building has been torn down due to the fire. Any idea if they will open in a new location? Good luck Pietro!

Sadly, this place is closed due to fire damage sustained from neighboring Hawk Cleaners. We will miss the wonderful, filling and somewhat healthy sammy’s from Maria. Hopefully she will return!

What do I want? A big honking sandwich, devoid of schmancy crap, piled high on a soft Italian roll with fresh, nitrate-free Boar’s Head turkey breast and some tangy cheddar, and nothing else(even if you have lettuce, tomatoes, onions, oils, salt & pepper, and the only interesting topping: roasted red peppers), offered to me by a hardened, authentic Bostonian who isn’t afraid to tell me she dumped her boyfriend over the weekend, who wants nothing in exchange but a warm smile and $ 6.95, and is just happy that a small, fluorescent-lit, barely-filled, some-imported-Italian-jars-on-the-shelf, fridge-full o’ meat-and-a-slicer operation can still function just dandy only a stone’s throw from Dave’s Fresh Pasta. When do I want it? Now.

Maria’s recently moved to Teele Square from Winter Hill. It’s an oldschool, blue collar Italian deli serving up reasonably priced cuts of meat and massive traditional subs. The meat is good and the people behind the counter are friendly. The Italian sub is just over six bucks and is easily stretched to two meals unless you’re in a particularly gluttonous mood. Still, Dave’s Fresh Pasta is still my go-to sandwich shop in the Davis/Teele area, but Maria’s is a good oldschool alternative if you’re not feeling fancy and are craving Italian bread over brioche.

Update: This place clearly deserves an extra star now that I’ve started buying my cold cuts here rather than at the supermarket. The quality is much better than what you typically see at Stop&Shop and you get all the nice little touches that shopping at a neighborhood business can offer. I would never have known that the Mortadella with pistachios has way more flavor than the regular variety had the nice lady at the counter not suggested I try a slice. The sandwiches are still awesome and huge, and the lady who always seems to be working when I go is warn and helpful. I love having them right around the corner from me — it’s a great neighborhood deli.

I love this place. The selection is great, the folks are friendly and the store has been rearranged really well. I love getting a tuna sub here. And the prices aren’t bad, especially because the portions are so large!

So I am a vegetarian and not prone to eating huge amounts of cured meats, but Tony(the new owner) couldn’t be nicer, and he makes the best sandwiches for me and my family. He also has a variety of nice Italian imports. It’s great to have a local deli with character and quality.
