Soma Salon and Spa

This is by far one of the best aveda salons I’ve ever been to… I came in with a seriously awful bleach blonde and black mess from a different salon and Mari was able to completely transform my hair. Their color technique is flawless! (Not to mention I was able to get a same day appt.)

I had very bad experience at Soma salon and spa. I booked an appointment using their website for Lead Stylist (David Shawn) for a haircut. On the day of my haircut appointment they left me a voice message that the stylist I had appointment with will not be able to make it, will I be interested in getting it done from Lisa. I called them back and asked about Lisa, what is her level, they she said is also a senior stylist (they charge money according to the level of stylist), I told them, but I have booked an appointment with Lead stylist, their response was «ok then we will book your appointment with Alley», I assumed she would be a lead stylist. I went for the haircut at 7pm, there I found out that Alley was a junior stylist, I felt bad and told Alley, I wanted to get my haircut from a lead stylist and explained everything that happened, she was very nice, she apologized and gave me a free hair blow dry. I was very disappointed as I was very excited about getting my cut, but I let it go and Alley booked me with another hair stylist Terry who is a senior stylist for Friday 3 pm. Friday, they left me a voice message that Terry called in sick and won’t be able to make it to the appointment. I called them back twice with my number nobody answered my call, then I tried with my sister’s phone and they answered, again very apologetic and offered a free hair cut the next day. I had plans for the next day and I din’t have any confidence in this salon that they can keep their appointments so I denied their offer and here I am writing my experience so that nobody else has to go through the same experience.

The salon is gorgeous and the staff is friendly, attentive and fantastic at what they do. I leave feeling fabulous every time!

Go to allison! She was super nice and friendly. And she managed to take care of my dried up brittle hair! You get a nice massage and free lip gloss/​lip stick application included with your haircut as well.

I was there today, great place with great costumer service but the style and color wasn’t as good. Something I saw and absolutlh didn’t like. First, when my mom said i dont want highlights and i just want a hair cut, the stylist said «you have to pay cancalation fee» ??? Really??? Next, after the stylist was done, she didnt bother to clean the color left on my face and she just left, she didn’t even come back for her tip. I hope they try to change or fix these. The price i paid didnt match the service i got.

i love Soma! i started going here last fall and it’s got to be one of the best salon’s i’ve been to. i used to get my hair cut and colored at a mall salon for the longest time but i’m spoiled now and will never go back. every employee that i’ve had interactions with at Soma have been nothing but friendly and helpful. they offer you water or hot tea, give you hand massages when you get a longer process done and are always polite. i get my hair cut and colored by Kari and she’s go to be my favorite stylist, ever. she’s super patient and energetic and constantly checking in to make sure i’m getting what i want (as she cuts). she’s chatty and keeps the conversation going but also doesn’t push conversation at you. Kari remembers things i’ve told her at previous appointments and at this point, she feels more like a friend than just a stylist. and i’ve never received so many compliments on my hair before! plus, the salon is always clean, neat and everyone is respectful of each others space. there are multiple garages around the area, so don’t get discouraged by the parking! definitely give this place a shot, i’m so happy i did!

What an amazing experience I had yesterday with Terry. We connected immediately. He listened to my needs of what exactly I wanted. When he was finished I could not stop smiling of how happy I was with my haircut. I can not thank Terry enough and I will for sure be back to visit Terry and recommend the salon to all of my friends. I was excited to try a new salon and when I saw Soma on Unilocal with great reviews I thought it would be perfect.
First, the parking was horrible I arrived an hour early because i planned on grabbing a bite before heading to my appointment but it took me an hour to find parking.
My hair stylist was Reane who is a senior stylist so I thought I would be in good hands. I came in for my roots to be bleached and tone. She was very quiet and didn’t talk much which is unusual for a hair stylist. I’ve been working in multiple salons as an esthetician for 4 years so I do know a little bit about hair and the first red flag was when she saturated my scalp with bleach she also left it on for longer than it bleach should be left. After she rinsed it she brought me back to blow dry before she put on the toner but typically it is applied on wet hair in the sink. As soon as she put the toner on my head was burning. I told her and she said she was almost done. I sat there with my head on burning fire. Then she rinse me out because I told her I could not take it anymore. She then rinsed out my hair and applied toner again this time in the sink like she should’ve done in the first place. After she washed me she gave me a little trim and blow dry. I ended up paying $ 190 for just my roots and a little trim which is a fair price, although at my regular salon I go to for 190 I can get all of that plus full foils.
After I left I ran my hands through my hair and notice some bumps on my scalp and then a few hours later they because oily scabs. As someone who deals with skin for a living I can conclude I got first degree burn on my scalp .
Did I also mention I was there for 5 hours for just a root touch up ?
I hate to give a salon a bad review but I really want people out there to know what might happen to them.

Maybe this is common practice at salons, but I’ve never encountered friendlier and happier staff! They always answer the phone by saying its a good day, and are not at all rushed or annoyed when you try to change an appointment. The laser techs are great too and explain everything so that you’re not surprised. I was nervous coming here at first, but am so glad I did!

I walked in one evening and immediately I was greeted by Shawn David. I love a place that makes you feel welcome once you step in! I asked if I could get a haircut+partial highlights and then he introduced me to the front desk lady and booked my appointment (which was only 30 mins wait time considering they had a few clients already)
Marie or Mari was my stylist, she really took the time and understand what I wanted AND what was actually realistic for me. She knew what she was talking about. I have really dark hair and I wanted a few highlights around my face to brighten it up. And just a small trim! The whole experience was really comfortable and relaxing. I love the atmosphere. All of the staffs are interactive.
The results was exactly what I wanted. Simple and subtle. I didn’t want anything too bright or drastic but a small change can really do a lot. It is pricey. However, you’re paying for the whole experience– and it’s worth every penny!

When I decided to try laser hair removal, I was pretty anxious about the entire process. The first time I called Soma, the receptionist was very kind and offered a same-​day appointment (which is unheard of in the Boston area). I met Lisa, who would perform the six treatments over the spring /​summer, and she put me at ease right away. I am so very happy that I took the time to do this, and a huge thank you to Lisa at Soma for doing such a wonderful job. I highly recommend Soma for laser! Thanks again!

I love Soma! Shawn David always does an amazing job with my highlights and Erin gives the best facial. All of the staff are so friendly and welcoming. The perfect place to go for a day of pampering!

LOVE this salon. Great location, friendly staff, best of all… Talented stylists and aestheticians. I’ve had facials by two different girls, both wonderful and relaxing. And I recently had a great hair cut by Allison. She was the gentlest stylist I’ve ever worked with and she cut my hair exactly as I wanted. So happy this salon opened up in such an accessible location!

I drove by this salon so many times and finally decided to walk in. I had highlights and a cut done by Theda. She made my hair look fuller than it is and the products she recommended works great! Ps. Tip in cash free Parking at amc.

I moved to the area just under a year ago and was bummed out when I couldn’t find an Aveda near me. I was so excited when I saw that they opened one in assembly row.
I had my first Avedaa haircut in over year and it was amazing. Anthony did a fantastic job. He knew exactly what I wanted even if I didn’t articulate it well. Fantastic cut. I’ll definitely be back.

I really can’t express how happy I am with my cut! I have curly, moderately thick hair and always struggle to find the correct stylist. I never usually cut my hair and just let it grow. Kari was awesome!!! She did exactly what I wanted and was super sweet. I always get so worried going into a new place because I always come out with hair way shorter than I want, but today was perfect! After the cut she blew out my hair beautifully! And on top of it all she let me talk her ear off and seemed genuinely interested.
Soma was so great and I will definitely be back again!

SOMA is a beautiful salon that’s inviting and cozy.
My stylist Tiffany was excellent at paying attention to detail and accommodating during the whole service.
Her passion for hair definitely shows :-)
She listened to my ideas I had for color,
then gave me her honest opinion about what would suite me best.
The color came out beautifully and now I’ve gained her trust from here on out!

I highly recommend this salon! I always get my hair colored by Shawn he does a great job! It’s a friendly environment they make you feel very comfortable! I will not go anywhere else for color/​cut. I also got a facial here which made my skin flawless after few days of getting it my face was clear and so soft!

I have fine, curly hair and, as a recent Bostonian, I was worried about finding a new stylist who could manage my tresses. Soma is super close by, so I tentatively decided to give it a try. It was NOT a mistake.
The service is terrific from the get-​go: tea, hot towel, magazines. I went with Renae — she is TERRIFIC! She’s super receptive and listened to all my worries (getting married in May, need to have my hair long and healthy, want to CHOP IT ALL OFF after it’s over). After the cut, she was still free, and the owner let her give me a hair and makeup trial! I got a gorgeous ‘do and a cool new makeup look as well as an awesome cut. I will most definitely be back.

Beautiful new salon and great stylists! Owner Shawn has been doing my hair for 7+ years and has maintained my blonde locks through many different phases. I get compliments often on my hair (one today, in fact, even though it’s been 3 weeks since I last had it done) and people are always shocked when I admit it is not even close to my natural color… shhh. Shawn always makes my coif look healthy and the perfect shade, depending on the season and my mood. He’s also hilarious and entertains me at every appointment.
Terry, another stylist, has also done a gorgeous job on me when Shawn has been unavailable. Terry is so so sweet and always makes me feel very comfortable and well taken care of. We have great conversations and I love seeing him, whether he’s doing my hair or not.
One of the most recent times I went in for an appointment, I took my cousin who has very long, very curly, and very thick hair. She saw yet another great stylist, Kari. After my super picky cousin explained to Kari that she likes her hair cut a very particular way and rarely likes the way her hair looks after an appointment, Kari took her time to understand exactly what my cousin wanted and the results were fantastic! My cousin loved the cut and blowout and actually got mad at me when she’d found out I’d gone back for another appointment about a month later without her.
I am so proud of Shawn for opening his own salon and, even though I live in the North End and hate leaving downtown, I am more than happy to make the trek to Somerville for a wonderful «Aveda Experience». His attention to detail I have seen over the past several years is clearly visible in this new endeavor and I think EVERYONE should go there!
Well not everyone cause I still need to get an appointment but a lot of people should!!!
